This goes back to one of the author's usual tropes. The heroine who doubts herself which may or may not be linked to some sort of mental health issues throughout the family. It could be annoying for some readers no doubt. Quite a few of Abby's questionable decisions link into how the case proceeds. If she'd told Reuben earlier he may have put the case together quicker.
It was a stupid move on her part. The author has a lot of potential to make this a really good story with a little tweaking.
I agree, just stupid. She has, in her possession, a gun she told Luke and Luke told his audience she didn't have. The gun goes missing, likely stolen. She should have told Reuben for sure about the open window and the missing gun.
Another dumb move that smart Abby would never make. The author really blundered here in forcing a situation that was untrue to her character. You just knew that gun was stolen by the killer and we’d see it again.
I was highly annoyed by these forced plot angles.
