A mysterious videotape warns that the viewer will die in one week unless a certain, unspecified act is performed. Exactly one week after watching the tape, four teenagers die one after another of heart failure.

Asakawa, a hardworking journalist, is intrigued by his niece's inexplicable death. His investigation leads him from a metropolitan tokyo teeming with modern society's fears to a rural Japan--a mountain resort, a volcanic island, and a countryside clinic--haunted by the past. His attempt to solve the tape's mystery before it's too late--for everyone--assumes an increasingly deadly urgency. Ring is a chillingly told horror story, a masterfully suspenseful mystery, and post-modern trip.

Sorry for the delay everyone! Thread is up and ready for discussion.

Would people be interested in a group watch of the movie version (Japanese and/or English) when we get close to the end?

So we're about halfway through this creepy read. How are you guys enjoying it? Has anyone seen the movie version? How do the two compare?

Terrence (grnkrby) | 347 comments I have not really seen the movie fully, but I read the book a long time ago.

I tried recommending the book to people I was with, and someone who knew of the movie was trying to say "oh, it's too scary, they wouldn't like it". This really isn't that "scary" if I recall, it's more mysterious. Most of the book involves these two dudes trying to explore this cursed tape and figure out how to survive it, and it's a lot more sweeping than you'd expect setting wise (definitely not your traditional "hole up in a building and try to survive" horror; these people are actively researching and figuring stuff out like detectives).
