The book read by most of the group as a warning for what might happen in the future. It felt very realistic/topical as it included a climate refugee crisis, a global pandemic and floods/storms - all of which are headlines in the news as this is written. These events were very cleverly written into the story and we were very impressed with the number of issues that were touched upon. It followed several generations of a family experiencing climate breakdown as the family struggled to continue. The characters in the book were the conduit for the climate break down which was a really interesting way of viewing the issue. There was an interesting discussion about the fact that an affluent family was chosen as the main characters, and whether the experiences would have been significantly different if a family from a different socioeconomic group had been followed.
The book was very depressing, however, and many the group found the characters quite annoying and were not invested in them.
Despite this the book scored a high score of 4.5/5!
