Historical fiction set in Mexico, I believe during colonization.
It was the first book of a series or trilogy.
Main character was referred to as a Bastard by himself and other characters. I seem to remember him being a bit of a ladies' man as well. I did not make it far,
I read this book in the early 2010's but know that it was backlist. I'm pretty sure it was published in the late 1980's through the 1990's but I can't be sure.

This is driving me nuts so I sure hope someone can help!
