Adam Wiemers Weir refers to other planetary systems as "solar systems." There is only one planetary system in the whole universe called a solar system, named after the star the planets orbit: Sol.

Literally unreadable.

Just kidding, I love this book so far, but it's strange that a novel based so heavily on science would make this kind of error. (https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/other-sol...)

Andy I took that to mean a system that surrounds a star, I just looked it up and it seems I am right

Adam Wiemers From my link:

"Our solar system is just one specific planetary system...the only one officially called “solar system,”

I'll take NASA over Merriam-Webster any day of the week! :P

I'm just kidding, it's not that big of a deal. Fun to nitpick though. :)

Mark Niles I found the book too detail oriented in the various explanations of his activities on the trip. Some people may like this. Also, the little alien creature seemed kind of juvenile, but should make for a good movie.

I can understand why someone might feel that way, but I was the exact opposite. I enjoyed the detailed science, and later in the book when some of the science was glossed over a bit more I felt cheated. I wanted more detail! Different strokes for different folks, right? But I've been where you are many times when it comes to popular books not appealing to me.

Understand. That's why I mentioned that some people will like the detail. I like the science, just not too much detail. I often have a similar problem with Neal Stephenson's stuff although I am a big fan of most of his work.

I believe this seems to be a common complaint with Andy Weir's writing. I personally enjoy the information he gives in such detail but I could understand how some find it irritating. When I read Artemis earlier this year I remember there were a few people complaining that they knew too much about welding after reading it.

haha a large percentage think NASA support a conspiracy that hides the flat Earth Theory. funny how no one suspects a dictionary publisher lol. (or that any other planet that you can see is round and not flat)

Derek Beaugarde I only managed to pick one winner in the Goodreads Choice Awards 2021 and it was Project Hail Mary. It was funny, witty and poignant and I loved the narrative style that Andy Weir instilled in the astronaut hero.

I actually liked your "Literally Unreadable" comment but I'm afraid most won't. I loved the book and will read it again. I think you were nit-picking a little too much.

A movie would be fun.

Me too, it's the only winner I picked. My picks in sci-fi lately haven't been so good and I really enjoyed this one.

Derek Beaugarde I read Project Hail Mary before The Martian, but both were equally as good, although, I felt there was more humour in PHM.

Well, the detailed scientific explanations are what make Andy's style unique. I personally enjoyed delving into the lengthy explanations. However, I have to admit, at the later part of the book I became a bit exhausted myself. I just read the explanations and didn't do much to comprehend them completely. I enjoyed it to the last page nonetheless.

Luanne Blick I absolutely loved Project Hail Mary. (I had already read The Martian three times.) I listened to the audiobook and read it on my Kindle at the same time. It was a great experience!

David Katzner I am not one for hyperbole, in fact I loathe it, so when I say that Project Hail Mary is "the GREATEST audiobook ever, in the history of all audiobooks", to anyone who knows me, that's a big deal. Yes, Andy has written a marvelous story that is brilliantly conceived, crafted and told. The characters are endearing and go beyond likable to downright lovable. Put that together with the brilliant narration of Ray Porter and we're talking audio perfection. It was recommended to me and I have since either recommended or bought this as a gift for over 25 people at this point.
Thank you Andy!

Mary Miller Agree, and now that you've mentioned it, I know a few people that might really enjoy it too.
