Cath | 370 comments @Mamacita, So sorry about your flare-up :( Unrelenting pain is often such a big contributor to depression, with good reason. Hope you get some relief soon.

Totally understandable that the last thing you need is a book bringing you down right now. I know I've put aside many an HR, regardless of how well-written it is, if it's making me feel bad or the H and/or h are overly irritating to me.

*Hugs* Mamacita — take care! Totally understand that feeling of a book having all the elements that should work but the overall feel is not working. Do you have some happy books lined up? Need suggestions?

@Mamacita, ohhh, how I know your words, I also have Fibromyalgia. That's why I read a lot. The moments I have crisis that's one of the things it helps me overcoming the days in bed. I hope you feel better soon!!

Well I just read that in a sitting! It was great. It was well written, the storyline was great and I loved both the H and h. I am going to read more in this series.

Having just read BOTM1 and BOTM2 back to back, and (view spoiler)

Women really were just chattels in this world.

Merry (jewelhound) | 856 comments Susan I have to agree with you! I have enjoyed both of the books you mentioned. I think that is why I have enjoyed these 2 books so much as they were more in keeping with what was happening to woman at the time.

Cath | 370 comments Finished! I really want to give this book 4.5 stars (drat it, Goodreads! Why can't you give us 1/2 stars?! lol)

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 109 comments Really enjoyed this story. Nice to see historical authenticity supporting the romance. A new writer fdor me - so a great discovery.

It is sad, and I started to feel it more as the story went on. There are times this type of story works better for me than others. An estranged married couple rarely makes a light-hearted story, for sure.

I finished, and I think I'm probably keeping my 4-stars. It's probably 4+ stars. My favorite aspect of it is the well-shown culture clash. I also liked how first impressions were not the measure of the individual. Maddie comes off as haughty and immature, and she is those things at first but she was mostly just trying to adjust and be the "lady" or the clan. Arran came off as gruff and cold at first, but later he certainly isn't cold. Really enjoyed getting to know these characters and the historical context of this one.

Merry (jewelhound) | 856 comments Joanna I agree with you. Good summary and I enjoyed the book.

Mamacita aka MawMaw (mamawantsbedtimestory) | 417 comments I ended up giving it 4.5* . But seriously any book that can make me feel such emotion deserves it. I cried more with this book and then I have cried in a long time from just reading. That alone should probably give it a five-star but I didn't absolutely love it want to read it again five star. To me my 5* reads are something I want to read it again and read everything in that series.

This story goes to show how a husband/wife/love can rend the other in the most hurtful ways. I can't imagine even coming back from that level of hurt.

When Jock & (view spoiler), I started crying again & didn’t stop until the end.

I don't know that I will want to read this author again unless I'm needing a good cry. Anybody that reads book #2, if this is the story of (view spoiler) it is a good love story and somewhat lighter-hearted or just a good love story without all the sadness please PM me.

I'm glad in the epilogue that (view spoiler) However, I wish they had got a book. That would have been a fun one to watch for sure! Also (view spoiler) should have gotten a book too. But I was happy about (view spoiler)

Can The Devil Is a Marquess be read as a standalone or would that spoil the other books in that series? I have book #1 The Madness of Viscount Atherbourne to read soon.

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 109 comments I am definitely in Arran's camp. Margot was a silly pain in the backside for most of the book. Arran was an idiot at times, but I liked the fact he loved her from the beginning, tried to help her settle in, but faced her snobbishness, selfishness and downright unpleasantness, how on earth was he supposed to behave?
the depiction of his attempts to be a good clan chief was really well done. Margot should have told him the truth about her father much earlier, but then of course there would have been no story!

Merry (jewelhound) | 856 comments @Mamacita This is the first book in the series I have read, so I am no help.

Loved reading all your thoughts & comments. I'm glad you did get to feel happier by the end. I think that epilogue might be one my most favorite ever. I think I'm of the same mindset as you are, and am going to go with 4 stars, and not round up. But I do think I'll read the rest of the series eventually.

Cath | 370 comments Mamacita aka MawMaw wrote: "Ha! Cath, love how you get really protective over Margot.

I know :) When Margot called herself foolish, I had to laugh. I said to her: "Now wait a minute! I just defended you and now you're going to agree with him!" And then I wanted to thump her on the head, too. lol

Even if she doesn't agree w/ me, tho', I'm going to defend her again. lol

So this is just how part of the story came across to me, and for the record I don’t disagree with how anyone else experienced it:

Trust was an important theme throughout Arran & Margot’s story. While I really like Arran, I could not see where, early in their marriage or later in the present time, he ever gave her a reason to trust him over her father. (Until the last few chapters, of course.)

(view spoiler)

So a thump on the head to both of them for calling Margot a fool for the choice she made, 'cuz from where I sit it was perfectly reasonable! LOL

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1222 comments Have read up to chapter 6. The splits in the time period, not to sure about. At the moment I think Margot is used by her father in a arranged marriage for his convenience. She seems to care for Arran, but hates the highlands.

That's one thing I really loved was the back and forth in time. I think that actually made me feel the characters emotions more than if I had read the story in chronological order.

Missy | 1484 comments I finished a few days ago but have been too busy with work to comment. I've read several books by Julia London and they weren't too memorable. I was actually dreading beginning this book based on prior reading experience with this author. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. I've even completed the second book in the series! I'll comment more later.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1222 comments I am enjoying the story. Poor Arran everyone seem to think he’s a traitor. I have read a couple of JL books before and liked them.

Shannon | 348 comments On chapter 10 and so far I am enjoying Arran and I don't dislike her. But I will have to say that I need to go back a few chapters because I've been falling asleep to the narrator LOL (not because he's boring, but because I'm tired), it's like being read a bedtime story.

Padma | 341 comments Enjoyed it thoroughly

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1222 comments I am on chapter 21 . I don’t dislike Margot, she has been used by her family. Which she has now realised. Plus she is now older and wiser. Arran is a fair person who looks after his clan , and has also been used by her family.
