Technology took off in the 1990's. Read a book with an author who initial's appear in Personal Computer OR Cell Phone
I like Kim's "read a book with the same title as a book you have previously read." I also prefer it as a 1 book task than a 2 book task (where you would read 2 books with the same title) because it means you can choose to read 2 books during the season with matching titles and use one of them, or just go through your Read books from previous years and find a matching book.
Halloween Costumes: read a book with Vampires, Werewolves, Mummies or Witches.Creature Feature: read a horror book with a nonhuman antagonist.
Pumpkin Spice Latte: read a book with all of the letters of PSL in the title.
Back to School: read a book where the main character is under 18 for the majority of the book.
Fall Colours: read a book with a mostly Red, Orange or Yellow cover.
Y2K: In the late 90s there was a real fear that all electronics would stop working as the year changed to 2000. Read a book with 2 or "two" in the title or subtitle.Beanie Babies: read a book by an author whose first and last initial is the same letter.
Space Jam: read a book with with MPG Sports.
Titanic: read a book with both Historical Fiction and Romance as MPGs.
O. J. Simpson Trial: read a book by an author who uses 2 initials at the start of their name.
Princess Diana's Death: read a book, fiction or nonfiction, about a member of a royal family.
The Macerena: read a book set at least 50% in a Spanish speaking country.
the 90s is my coming of age decade :) The first thing I thought of was Nirvana and their iconic album Nevermind. Read a book with a word of at least three letters from the tracks on Nevermind in the title"Smells Like Teen Spirit"

The show was often described as "a show about nothing," but it ruled the airways in the 90's until the show finale on May 14, 1998. Choose one of the following options and read one book:
Option 1: Read a book whose title contains all the letters found in either: Seinfeld, Jerry, Elaine, George or Kramer.
Option 2: Read the final book in a series.
Option 3: Since "nothing" is represented numerically by "0," read a book that contains the page number zero in any position.

Magic Johnson
NBA great and Los Angeles Lakers legend, Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced his retirement from basketball in 1991 when he was diagnosed with HIV. He made short comebacks in 1992 and 1996. He won multiple NBA MVP awards, appeared in at least a dozen All-Star games and became an advocate for HIV / AIDs awareness. Read 2 books from 2 different options:
Option 1: Read a book set 50% in Los Angeles, CA
Option 2: Read a book where "magic" is part of the storyline or "magic" or "magical realism" is a MPG.
Option 3: Read a book from the following Listopia book list: Best Books about HIV/AIDS (Fiction and Non-Fiction)
Option 4: Read a book that has won an award. The award must appear on the GR Literary Awards megadata.
O.J. Simpson - Trial of the Century
O.J. Simpson was tried and acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman, which occurred on June 12, 1994. His trial began in November of 1994 and took 11 months to reach a conclusion.

John + Carolyn - American Royalty
The courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy, Jr and Carolyn Bessette on September 21, 1996 fueled tabloids and fascinated the public. They tragically died in a plane crash in 1999.

Lisa MDTamagotchi Pet - Life Cycle
The Tamagotchi is a handheld digital pet that was created in Japan by Akihiro Yokoi of WiZ and Aki Maita of Bandai. It was released by Bandai on November 23, 1996, in Japan and on May 1, 1997, in the rest of the world, quickly becoming one of the biggest toy fads of the late 1990s and the early 2000s.
All Tamagotchis naturally evolve over time as they age, starting from the egg to the baby, child, teen, and adult stages. Each pet will develop differently depending on the care the player provides, with better care resulting in an adult creature that is smarter, happier, and requires less attention.

Lol, I fed my brother's Tamagotchi an ice cream and it promptly died! He still won't let me forget it!!

I was thinking about the same thing but with boy bands and maybe a child star memoir (nonfiction)

A couple more movie options.As if! Clueless came out in 1995 as a retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. Read a retelling or "based on" book as indicated in MPG or GR description.
Side note, I was surprised when I read Emma years later at how closely Clueless followed it!
Toy Story also came out in 1995 as Pixar's first film.

The Nintendo 64 came out in 1996. Read a book with the numbers 6 and 4 in the page number.Pokémon came on the scene in 1996 with Pokémon red and blue. Read a book with a cover at least 50% one of those colors.
My memorable events in the 1990s art world1) 1990: One of the largest art heist in history - an estimated 500 million dollar in art stolen from Isabella Stewart Gardner musueum in Boston.
2) Famous architecture: maybe most famous for the Louvre glass Pyramid (1989) I. M. Pei's Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame was completed in 1995
3) Famous dancers I love, that died in the 1990s: Rudolf Nureyev (1993), Margot Fonteyn (1991) and Ginger Rogers (1995)
4) Several albums Symphonie no. 2 and Kronos Quartet album some of my favorite music from Philip Glass came out in the 1990s. His music spans the whole spectrum from solo piano to opera, film scores, string quartets, cellos and chamber orchestra.
5) On opening day of 1994 winter olympics in Littlehammer, Norway, Edvard Munch's The scream was stolen from the National Museum of Art in Oslo, Norway.
6) My french singer, Veronique Sanson, released one of her best albums (in my opinion) in 1999, D'un papillon à une étoile, with my favorite song Le paradis blanc

As in past challenges some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of fall or autumn. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of those themes, they’re just fun or unique ideas to stimulate your reading.
Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don’t worry about repeating what someone else has might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!
The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10 and 15 point tasks. This thread will be open for ideas until August 13. Fall tasks will begin to be posted on August 15. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
