When You’re Not Reading a Cozy
Another non-cozy finished this week: Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris. I can’t believe this has been moldering in Mount TBR for a decade now, but that is one reason I made finishing this series a priority this year. It helps that both this and the final book fit the Popsugar challenge (afterlife and tiger on the cover).
The reasons I put off finishing the series so long are many. For one, I knew this was the penultimate book in a series I had been following for years and it can be difficult to say goodbye to characters you have known for so long. I think there was also the fact I didn’t like the direction (action) of the last couple books. The fact I friend and I had been watching True Blood at the time may have also been an influence.
I have the last book planned for July.

My weekend readathon reviews:
Those Who Perish by Emma Viskichttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Hell Is Always Today by Jack Higginshttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Once Gone by Blake Piercehttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A Family's Trust by Louise Guyhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I was Heather! It's always fun but I'm always glad when it's done as I can't read at that pace for too long :)
My 4 star review of Hatchet Island
by Paul Doiron:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This riveting crime thriller and police investigation keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The setting is mainly on four islands off the coast of Maine as well as the sea kayak trip to get there.
Trying to get through The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey before it's due back at the library - it's an interesting premise but a bit of a slow start for me
I am reading The Body in the Garden
by Katharine Schellman. Set in 1914 London. I am not very far into it yet, but I enjoy the writing style and the caring of the characters. Ms. Schellman is a new to me Author.
Right now I'm reading A Christmas Legacy. I enjoy all of her books. And these "in between the series" ones are short and fast reads.
Finishing off the week with
Island of Thieves by Glen Erik Hamilton https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I think Amazon needs to start a “whodunit” category for quirky Murder mysteries. This book M is for Dog Show: A Mystery With Real Bite is a humorous and fast read, lighthearted and animal focused, but not a cozy with a displaced female lead and a strong romantic storyline set in a small quaint town. Traditional Detective somewhat works but not as well as Whodunit.
My 4 star review of Firestorm
by Taylor Moore:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Diverse characterization, exciting scenes, and great world-building made this crime thriller a winner for me.
Another Popsugar book out of the way! Just finished Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, first in a trilogy. This book features an interracial relationship and while I enjoyed the book — the email exchange in chapter eight had me LMAO! — some people may not like the language or explicit sex scenes. IMO, that makes it a great summer read, though it’s set in fall.
I am using this for a BIPOC romance in the Popsugar Challenge, which means I am now 32/50. I picked up Chloe over the weekend because I wasn’t in the mood for the more serious book next on my June/Popsugar lists, Beloved by Toni Morrison, so now I guess it’s time to stop procrastinating and putting it off. I’ve heard it’s not an easy read, so will likely alternate it between short stories.

I been gone for a while but I have been reading. Last one I finished was The Maid by Nita Prose and now I'm reading a non-fiction The Watchmakers: A Story of Brotherhood, Survival, and Hope Amid the Holocaust by Harry Lenga which I won from #KensingtonPublishing.
Starting out the week with
The Drowning Sea by Sarah Stewart Taylor https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My 4 star review of Daughter of Redwinter
by Ed McDonald:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This is the first book in a new epic fantasy series. Overall, it is gripping and thought-provoking. The high stakes and smooth writing made it a page turner for me. There’s a lot of time spent introducing the characters and some of their back-stories as well as world-building, but that’s not unusual in the first book in a series of this magnitude. However, there is a lot of introspection by the main character that slows the pace as times.
Recently finished
The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield. Hubby is seriously into all things related to space travel, and Hadfield is his favorite astronaut, so I read this book to see if it's something he might like (almost like pre-reading a book before you give it to young kids lol). I was surprised by how much I liked the book, which is set in the early 70s. Think something like The Hunt for Red October, but set in space, which presents its own set of challenges. Many of the characters are real people who were involved in the Apollo program, and some of the situations actually happened. The tension between the US and the USSR plays a huge part here too. Once things started happening, it was hard to put the book down, and I've already ordered it for Hubby to read.
My review for
A Dolphin Called Jock: An injured dolphin, a lost young woman, a story of hope by Melody Horrillhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Here is my 4 star review of Harlem Sunset
by Nekesa Afia.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Set in Harlem in the late 1920’s, Harlem Sunset by Nekesa Afia brings to life the vibrant nightlife, jazz music, dancing, and cultural awareness of the times. It’s not just a historical mystery, but also the character journey of protagonist Louise Lloyd.
Finished Beloved by Toni Morrison. As expected it was not a fast read, but it was good. One more Popsugar prompt done!
Here is my 4 star review of Harmony of Fire
by Brian Feehan:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Brian Feehan’s debut novel, Harmony of Fire is an intense paranormal romantic suspense novel with plenty of action, thrills, and edginess. The author’s creativity and great world-building stand out in this novel. (Brian is the son of Christine Feehan).
I enjoyed
Charlie Thorne and the Curse of Cleopatra by Stuart Gibbs, a fun Middle Grade mystery/adventure.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished The 6:20 Man by David Baldacci. It's a stand alone that was very hard to put down. Plenty of Baldacci's usual twists and turns, making it very hard to identify the bad guys.
I'm reading The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary - the first book I've read by this author. I'm not thrilled so far...the characters are rubbing me the wrong way a bit and I'm not very interested. I'll finish it, but I can't see my opinion changing much. I'm about 40% through.
I listened to An Ex to Grind in Deadwood. It featured the usual cast of characters plus a few additions. Fun as all the Deadwood books are.
My 4 star review of Upgrade
by Blake Crouch:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This novel combines genetic engineering science fiction with a techno-thriller. The story is engaging and suspenseful, keeping me turning the pages.
My 3.59 star review rounded to 4 stars for A Remarkable Rogue
by Anna Harrington:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Anna Harrington provides readers with a historical fiction tale that includes romance, danger, and suspense. This book has a solid plot, with great character depth, extraordinary characters, and a fascinating mystery.
When I am not reading a cozy, my current go to have been Kate Quinn novels. Historical fiction that just sucks me right in. Right now I am reading The Rose Code. So very good!
Right now I'm reading A Burial at Sea. This series is very good if you like Victorian era, British "detective" novels. You can tell the author does an enormous amount of research for each book.
