After a fair bit of debate I decided to go with Roverandom by J.R.R. Tolkien.
It's a fairly short story about a little dog who goes on a variety of adventures which Tolkien wrote for his children after one of his sons lost a toy dog on holiday. I picked up my copy during Independent Booksellers Week a couple of years ago and read it in a couple of days.
I especially like that there are some little nods to Middle-earth as well as things which children won't necessarily get but which will be funny for adults. My edition has little notes at the end so you can see how many of them you picked up on.

Anyone else going for this one?
