For A.B., a former book editor, ‘A Man Twice Dead’, “… fizzes with inventiveness and ingenuity.” For Delwyn Swingewood, it is, “… a country house murder mystery with a difference.”

Fabulously wealthy tycoon Sir Duncan Andrews has enemies all over the world due to his business dealings and has turned Carelingham Hall, his English country mansion, into a state-of-the art fortress to keep them out. Ironically, he then discovers that the greatest threat lies within. He either takes his own life, or is unable to save himself from being murdered by one of his own circle, according to whichever interpretation of the ambiguous evidence is accepted. The police conclude that he killed himself, but his solicitor has another version of events and informs the potential beneficiaries of his will that Sir Duncan had believed he was about to be murdered by one of them. Before he died, he changed the will and, in the event of his violent death, gave them three days to find his killer or lose all rights to the money they had hoped to receive. Cue the arrival at the Hall of the proverbial nest of vipers, including: his former mistress, in mourning overdrive; the poisonous son who runs (extremely incompetently) part of the business empire; his even more poisonous daughter, a ruthless Oxford professor famous for her complete contempt for anyone she regards as her intellectual inferior - which would seem to include most people other than herself; a sanctimonious vicar with fierce ambitions to rise in the church hierarchy; a politician with a dubious reputation and a name that everyone forgets; the black sheep of the family in a family of many black sheep, a darkly sarcastic dilettante whose main purpose in life seems to be to irritate severely his least pleasant siblings; and humble Casey Maloney, the daughter Sir Duncan had out of wedlock, but for whom he seems to have harboured a special fondness. The great man’s will commands all of the assembled horde to investigate each other in order to find out who the killer is. Overseeing this most peculiar process is his formidable right-hand man, former Royal Marine John Scrivens. The book is a fond tribute to the whodunnits of the past, in which high-tech criminality and low-tech cunning, vicious class warfare and savagely satirical wit, all play their part. Few are who they seem and only the unexpected should be expected …
