Fairy tales are the first stories many of us absorb as children, so it’s no surprise that fairy tale retellings are a popular subgenre across the book world. This weekend, we are inviting you to share recommendations of your favorite retellings. Come tell us what you think.

Rob Underwood (robertunderwood) | 56 comments Gregory Maguire's Wicked is one of my favorite books. Recasting the wicked witch of the West (Elphaba Throp) as a complex and flawed hero standing against the corruption of the wizard. Maguire's "Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister" is also amazing. And the comic books Fables and Fairest completely subvert all fairytales by moving the action to modern New York City where the characters have had to flee to escape the Adversary, a conquering entity that has destroyed their realms. Utterly brilliant book and the multi volume series is finished.
