Lilisa | 575 comments Maame sounds interesting!

I got approved for So Shall You Reap by Donna Leon earlier this month. It’s the latest - the 32nd book in the Commissario Brunetti series set in Venice, Italy.
I’ve been reading the series since last year - not in order, which is not a problem. It’s my “new” fav mystery series and has ousted Louise Penny’s Armand Gamache series. Penny’s latest book was disappointing.

Oh, I got a widget. Didn't realize it wasn't posted to the general population yet. I'm sure it will be available to request at some point. It doesn't publish until August.

Vicki Willis | 871 comments I just got 2 more
And then I looked and I have 10 pending!
The 2 new ones are

With My Little Eye by Joshilyn Jackson With My Little Eye - I have had success with this author before

Speak of the Devil by Rose Wilding Speak of the Devil - this one wasn't on my radar but was offered as a read now, so I am going to try it.

Vicki, I think I've mentioned this before, but I think we have very similar taste in books. lol I'm trying so hard not to request more, but I have a running list of books I want from NetGalley.

I just got Red Queen Red Queen by Juan Gómez-Jurado . It's actually an older book, but I think it's the first release of the English translation. When I originally looked at it, it only had a few reviews, but there are over 30k now and it still has an average rating of 4.10.

Shruti morethanmylupus (morethanmylupus) | 1111 comments Ooh I read that one Kristie. It was good but gritty.

message 627: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 575 comments I haven’t been good about adding my books. Since my last post was approved for:

A Small Sacrifice for an Enormous Happiness: Stories by Jai Chakrabarti - already read and reviewed.

The French Art of Living Well: Finding Joie de Vivre in the Everyday World by Cathy Yandell

Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo. I’ve loved all her previous books - hoping I’ll feel the same about this one.

Goodbye, Eastern Europe: An Almost Forgotten History by jacob mikanowski

Also added: Passport to Spy by Nancy Cole Silverman - not on GR yet, will have to add. It sounded interesting and It’s a Read Now one.

After reading here that widgets can actually disappear before the pub date, I accepted a couple that I had been waiting on - Dark Corners (Rachel Krall, #2) by Megan Goldin & The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer . I'll likely accept Wonderland by Jennifer Hillier as well. I just want to be sure that I can get to it quickly first because it is an audio.

message 629: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 202 comments I am still a baby NGer :) I have only reviewed 1 adult book so far - The Angel Maker and I am about 2/3 done with Who Gets Believed?: When the Truth Isn't Enough. I enjoyed the Alex North book a lot, but the Who gets Believed book is really burrowing into my brain. It's one I will recommend to friends.
Most of my reviews for NG have been children's books because I am a kindergarten teacher. Can you create different Net Galley accounts? So I can have one for me books and one for work books? Is that why I have been denied books?

message 630: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 202 comments I also thought maybe audio books would be harder to get but I have been approved for my audio asks but not for any of my ebook asks (adult not children's books)

message 631: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2898 comments Mod
I am reading The Angel Maker now, Katrisa. I found it a bit confusing in the beginning as there were a lot of characters introduced and different time periods as well. I ended taking a few notes to make a bit of a cheat sheet to refer back to. Fortunately, I also have the physical book because it's much easier to go back to look things up in. I'm enjoying the audio now that I have the characters sorted out.

I don't think you can have multiple accounts because it is all linked together with your Kindle and email and such. Though, I'm not really sure. Reading children's books shouldn't disqualify you from receiving adult books. I do both ebooks and audio and have done most genres in adult books, YA, middle grade, and children's. I'veeven allowed my grandson to pick a book to read with me for when he visits.

message 632: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2898 comments Mod
Sometimes it helps to read a few "read now" books in genres you enjoy to get started. Also, be sure to set up your preferences on your NetGalley page to include both adult and children's genres.

Final tip, download everything to your Kindle (or other e-reader) as soon as you are approved so they don't disappear on you and be careful with the audios. The ebooks will stay on your device forever once downloaded, but audios will disappear from the NetGalley shelf even after they have been downloaded.

message 633: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 202 comments I agree about The Angel Maker. It was confusing at first but once I got into the groove I enjoyed it.
Thanks for the read now tip! I'll try that!

Nice! I really liked Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia but Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was okay. She writes such a variety of genres!

I just read a positive review for a new mystery-thriller series and decided to try it. I grabbed the first in the series, The Girls on Chalk Hill, from NetGalley. Anyone have this one?

Agree Katrisa!

message 647: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I got approved for 2 books this week:

The Many Lives of Mama Love A Memoir of Lying, Stealing, Writing, and Healing by Lara Love Hardin and Roman Stories by Jhumpa Lahiri

I'm looking forward to both of these. I haven't been requesting many lately as I've been trying to keep my NG tbr on the smaller side so I don't feel overwhelmed.

Tasha wrote: "...I haven't been requesting many lately as I've been trying to keep my NG tbr on the smaller side so I don't feel overwhelmed. "

I've been doing the same. I haven't been reading quite as much, so my NGs are falling behind. Plus, I'm feeling obligated to read them and not able to read other things, so less fun at the moment. Having less on my shelf just feels less stressful right now.

message 649: by Tasha (last edited May 04, 2023 05:17AM) (new)

Tasha Exactly, I like to be able to spread out my reads over different areas. I'm trying to focus more on my home shelves to get things moving.

I was declined for that one.

I haven't been requesting very many. Trying to get through what I have and get my percentage up. Plus trying to make a dent in my physical TBR.
