The book I'm looking for is an adult sci-fi or maybe classified as fantasy in which certain people have abilities like telekinesis etc. and a group of them form a research/ government team. There is also a type of drug that can be made from their blood I think that gives ordinary people powers but makes them go insane. The opening scene is the group taking down a man who has gone insane and is holding his family hostage. There is a soldier who joins the group (he may have been a SEAL?) and develops a relationship with one of the researchers/ leads of the team.
There was something in the book about how people with abilities had to abstain from romantic relationships as they would weaken/ distract them, but it was not really true, as the soldier and doctor eventually discover.
There was also another male researcher who doesn't have to sleep only mediate but he was sending his thoughts on accident to another staff member.
There was a girl who was kidnapped that the team was trying to find, and I think the soldier had some connection to her.
The story was set in a post economic collapse America due to the drug or something else.
I think there was also an older man on the team/ leading it that had a professor X type of role who was also in love with a woman but never acted on it due to the thought it would weaken his abilities.
Thats about all I can remember, although I remember reading it around 5-10 years ago.
