Allison | 905 comments This is Book 2 in the Cupcake bakery Mystery series.
A short overview of the story (from Amazon):

Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura's Fairy Tale Cupcakes bakery is gearing up for Valentine's Day. Unfortunately someone has iced Baxter Malloy on his first date with Mel's mother. Now Mom's a suspect, and Mel and Angie need to find time around frosting to dig into the man's shady past and discover who served him his just desserts.

Sounds good, so let's dig in...

Jill Tool | 992 comments Allison is reading to go!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be joining hopefully Mon. or Tue. Been so busy last month that it's taken me much much longer to read Once upon A Grind. :( I hate when life cuts into my reading time...lol...Had two of the grandbabies this weekend. So hopefully I'll get to finish it and then start on Buttercream. I do have a dog that is due to deliver this week, so that will cut into reading. But I will be joining, even if I'm not reading it just it. Wish we luck with the birthing of the puppies. The one that is delivering, she's my favorite and my baby girl, sooooooooooo this is going to be a special delivery for me and probably emotional as well.....

No worries! I'm gonna be starting it today maybe, so you are not behind at all. I just thought I would get the thread up for people.

Glad you are able to spend lots of time with the grand kids - that's wonderful for you and for them. Congrats on the puppies too! I'm a "Dog-Mom" myself so I totally get the emotion, etc. Since I have no kids I pour all my maternal feelings into my "fur-babies."

Has anyone read the 1st book in this series? Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #1) by Jenn McKinlay

Will we be missing information going directly to Book 2?
I also thought there was only 2 books in the series and I just noticed there are actually 6 at this time with the 7th coming out in April. Gotta say I love the titles of the books in this series, makes me hungry and just my thoughts turning to baking yummy things in the kitchen.

Jill Tool | 992 comments Ty Allison. Farrah is diffently my diva, I mean dog.....I chose her and she chose me, so it's a win, win for both. You can tell she's my dog. When she got breed, she whined unless I was sitting right there with her and my male that she breed to. If I got up she would try and follow me, but as long as I sat there with her she was fine. I know it will be that way when she delivers.

Whelping box is almost done, hubby will finish it this evening, and everything else is ready to go, we are just waiting on her...lol... I'm thinking she's going to have anywhere from 4 - 8. I'll probably be able to finish a book from the time labor starts until she starts delivering. One of my dogs one time went into labor and with in an hour delivered.

I don't think we will miss anything if we read the second one first. Usually the first books are introducing everyone and getting to know them, so I think we will be ok.

Peeked at it and it seems engaging from the get go. I should be able to go in full throttle in a day. Downton and other pbs material on tonight. ;-) Never fails, feast or famine.

Hi Allison, I've read the first four books in the series. Each book does stand up on its own, but I feel you miss out on character development reading out of order. There are small parts that carry through the series especially in the development of the various relationships.

I am to chapter 4 I think. Unfortunately, I went to read more last night and found my Kindle battery dead. Catching up tonight, I hope!

I agree with Tina that is seems engaging so far!

message 10: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments I started reading this this morning about 5:30 - really enjoying it so far! I might actually finish it tonight I read so far earlier and the story just flows so easily. Love the characters - the threesome of Angie, Tate and Mel seem like "friends" of mine already.

Not too sure about the love interest, Joe, though. How slow is the guy anyway? I understand tired but geez...

I haven't guessed who-dun-it yet though.

Karen | 2 comments Hi all, I did not know about this series by Jenn McKinlay until it was mentioned in this group, so I haven't read the first book in the series yet. I did download this one though (Buttercream Bump Off) and started reading and am on the second chapter. When should we have chapters 1-8 read by? I decided I would try to read 7-10 cozy mysteries this year. I have read 2 so far and have this one and Kilt Dead started. So far I have liked what I read and will download more by this author. Thank you Allison for the recommendation of this book. Happy reading everyone!

Hello Karen, Welcome! I haven't read the 1st one yet either but I didn't have any problems with this. There was a couple of references to the previous book but nothing I couldn't just ignore. Oh, we don't rush too much so maybe next week I'll post the thread for Chapters 9-16 to give folks a chance to read. Actually we voted on this one so it's a group effort but thanks for the kudos.

I finished this first section Monday night and got to the murder, an unusual one, indeed. Mel's mother is an interesting character, indeed. I think she will have more to say about the goings on at her "date." The addition of the victim's son is certainly an interesting thing as well. Will his date with Angie wake Tate up to his interest in Angie?

Having to catch up. We've had a trying few days in the household as SO's mom started showing signs of forgetfulness. Had to make a police "wellness call" on her and they ended up taking her in for observation and tests. She has dementia and cannot be left alone. We had to scramble (long distance is extra difficult) to find a respectable caregiver; we'll see how she does with this live in situation. We don't want to put her in a home so we're trying it out. Anyway, sorry to get off on tangent but I didn't want you to think I abandoned the PI's. I look forward to escaping into this cozy.

I need a big buttercream cupcake. Chocolate with white icing would be nice.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your mom-in-law (so to speak.) That is truly a difficult thing to deal with. Both my parents had dementia, at the same time for a while. Good luck to you.

New Karen, Yippee! lol We love that you love cozies and are here with us. The more PI's the better! You'll find some nice mystery buffs here in our company. Welcome!!

message 20: by Allison (new)

Allison | 905 comments Tina, let us know if there is some way we can make it better for you right now. My Grandpa had dementia and that was really hard to deal with and I completely understand about not wanting to put her in a home.

TWO buttercream cupcakes for Tina and everyone else! We deserve it!

Does anyone else think Mel's Mom just maybe needs to grow up? I can not even bear to think of my Mom acting so needy. It would drive me up the wall.

The son, Roach, is really quite special as well.

I do love the threesome of Mel, Angie and I forget his name. They are so cute - just the kind of friends I would love to have.

Thank you, Allison! We do need to know more re: progression of situation but I gather it's different with everyone. Just seems onset was rather quick. Like it started in fall 2014 and quickly worsened. Then again, it's difficult when we're not in same town, relying on her and her friends' feedback.

Appreciate you the PI's comforting notes. It's a big help. ;-)

Must read on a bit before I have something worthwhile to report.

LOL - oh yes the visual on that is really funny.

The girls don't actually seem to spend too much time in the bakery after all. And closing it at a moment's notice seems to be OK too.

I love Marty! He's wonderful and needs a mystery just for himself. Can't imagine the calories he's putting away though...

I agree that burning the dress wasn't the best idea. Then again, it's not like Joyce or Mel picked clothes off the vic and burned it/them. Joyce's personal clothing should be her own. Would Martinez asked for any of Joyce's clothing (unless bio matter on it) if it were not mentioned?

message 27: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Tina, Sorry to hear about SO's mother. My aunt got dementia, she was the only one out of 10 kids to get it. She was my grandmother's younger sister. She was able to stay in her home as my uncle was there to tend to her and her other sister was living close by and she would take her to get her hair done and also accompany my uncle to her dr. appointments. it was sad to see that she only remembered her younger sister and one of her daughters. Sometimes my cousin wished she wouldn't remember her because there was several times she would call and talk to her and my aunt would jump her case as she wasn't home on time, the school called and said she hadn't been attending classes, and god love my cousin, because somebody had to....she told my aunt that the school wasn't lying, she hadn't been attending any of her classes for the past 25 years and she had no intentions of going back there, since she and her family had lived in texas for the past 20 years.....lol...My cousin said she was grounded more when my aunt got dementia then she did the whole time she was growing up. One thing that they found to helped them get through that was when they talked about the past, and she would correct them and it came out funnier and they would all laugh about it, and they had someone they could vent to, my cousin had me to vent to, because she knew I wouldn't judge her for not moving back closer to her mother, that I would listen, even if it was just her calling me and cry. Sometimes everyone forgets that it's not just the person with the disease that needs someone to take care of them, but also the loved ones that can't be there or the ones that are the caregivers. I became a huge support for my cousin and when her mama passed away she thanked me for helping her and being there for her. I told her she didn't have to thank me, that's what family is for. Everyone has to find there own way that helps them cope with this, ask for help when they need it and someone they can use as a support system. This is a disease, that people want answers for, but there isn't any, and emotions run high. Hang in there Tina, we're here for you anyway we can be, even if you just need to vent. Now enough talk of this, go fix yourself a nice drink, grab your book, a blankie that brings you comfort, and alot of cupcakes, you deserve it!

Oh and somewhat good news, my furbaby is showing the first stage of labor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jill Tool | 992 comments She started this morning. At 10:41 am, she graced us with a lil girl. Since then 3 boys have arrived, pretty sure she isn't done. It's been a long long three days. I haven't had much sleep about 2 hours this morning. So after puppies are all here, mama doing good, I'm going to bed. Will catch everyone in a couple of days after I have some good sleep, and mama settles down. Don't worry I will return and be talking about our book and of course my new fur babies.

Aww, thanks, Jill. Appreciate the feedback and encouragement. Good thing is we're fortunate to have found a great a gal to live in...at least for the while. We'll have to see how long this situation lasts. If I can ask you a question: how long did your relative survive once she was diagnosed with dementia?

Congrats on the furbabies. The cycle of life goes on.

In your opinions, should Tate have told her brothers that she was dating Roach? I'm not sure about this one but am leaning towards "it's a bit of a snitch for him to have done that."

Jill Tool | 992 comments Tina wrote: "Aww, thanks, Jill. Appreciate the feedback and encouragement. Good thing is we're fortunate to have found a great a gal to live in...at least for the while. We'll have to see how long this situ..."

She was in her mid 80's when she got it, age going against her here, but she lived two or three years with it. She was also a diabetic, since that runs heavy in our family, other than that she was picture perfect heath. I also think there age, their health also plays apart in their life span.

message 33: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool | 992 comments Update on Farrah: she has give me 3 boys and 1 girl. The girl and two of the boys are dapples, and the other boy is a brindle. Oh I think I forgot to mention, Farrah is a brindle dachshund and I breed her to my male dapple boy who is also a dachshund

Well, yes and no. Yes because she knows how over protective they are and wouldn't it have been easier to just tell them so as to not cause too much trouble? But then on the no side she's a grown woman and able to make her own choices and what if it was just a date or two and then Roach went on tour and that was the end of it? A tempest in a teapot? She would have raised a ruckus for no reason. I'm thinking she couldn't win either way. No matter what I think the brothers would be upset over any guy she chose. Tate is kind of a tattle-tale for telling the brothers though. Really since he never stepped up over the years it was none of his business.

Jill, Appreciate the feedback. This lady is 82, 83 next month so she's getting up there.

Congrats on the new puppy kids. ;-)
