So, dates!
I'm thinking this
We'll do a short one (half an hour, so 3-5 presenters) in July just to get this off the ground. Then we'll do another in September and if there's interest, we can maybe aim for 2-4 a year.
If Diane is joining, it should be earlier in the morning (from where I sit) on a Saturday. It'd mean Western US couldn't join, but we could get Eastern US, Europe and most of Asia and Australia. But it'd be like 9 am ET. Thoughts?

I’ll be doing a lot of weekend/odd hour work in July and August, and don’t know yet what my schedule will be, but I intend to show up and quietly observe if the work schedule allows. When I have a normal schedule, 9am on a Saturday would work well for me.I would love if it were recorded, because I strongly expect I'll be working most weekends. I could try to do both at once, but I'm not a good multitasker, and I think my colleagues would be very confused if they heard singing every time I unmuted my microphone on the work call! :)
I was afraid to suggest recording for fear not everybody would be comfortable with it, and it might make people more reticent to jump in. Oddly, being recorded doesn't bother me too much once I've already put myself out there in the first place, but I get recorded a lot at work so I'm pretty used to it.
I am not sure I love the idea of recording, for those reasons. I'd feel the need for consent beforehand, which could be negated.
So, this first one might be folks who are OK to be recorded presenting and we'll go from there!
I'm thinking 9 am ET July 18 or 25 for first round, September we'll do again.
First round would be:
Zoom and mini voice lesson
Goodreads
??? Silvana? Mel? Leonie?
Allison and the art of folding napkins
And, with our newly empowered group of Zoom and GR users, we can bank on a more substantial meeting in September :)

I am happy to be a guinea pig, if required, DivaDiane!
I"m guessing that 9am ET = 11pm Australian Eastern Standard Time if I have the time zones correct.
I also don't mind being recorded. I'm actually getting pretty excited to both share some Japanese words, and to see everyone else's contributions!Farbeit from me to wrest the privilege away, but if Leonie would rather not be guinea pig, then I'll also volunteer as tribute. :)
Allison wrote: "I'm thinking 9 am ET July 18 or 25 for first round, September we'll do again..."Note sure I want to actually downvote 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning, but I should at least make the point that that is prime Saturday Night Recovery time, and an even tougher time for the other 3/4 of the population of the Americas.
And, since I am trying to put the R back into my Agent of S.W.O.R.D. designation, it's going to make me late to the church services I still haven't gotten back to in seven years...
haha Saturday not Sunday! and yes, i realize this is hard for Americans but so far all interest from this continent has been the east
Allison wrote: "haha Saturday not Sunday! and yes, i realize this is hard for Americans but so far all interest from this continent has been the east"Ha, well, they snooze, they lose!
So, July 17th or July 24th are now the options then? Or did I miss Leap Monday?
ugh. my work calendar starts with Mondays and my home one starts with Sundays. sorry. yes i meant July 17 or 24
I decided a few years ago that my real week starts on Saturday. But it wasn't until this year that I convinced Outlook and timeanddate.com to display calendars for me that start with the weekend! Hardcopy, and working with others, are still at odds with me, though.
I can only do the 17th. Like I said, I can start at 4pm BST (GMT +1), which is also our usual start time for Virtual Book Club. That would be 11am Eastern which might make it doable for the truly dedicated on the West coast.
Saturday is much better for me! I was thinking that 11pm on a Sunday night means a rather tired Monday morning at work (I start at 8am, so am up at 6, as I like to be at work by 7.30am).I'm AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Once things go past 10am ET, it starts to be Sunday for me.
Ah yes, of course, Leonie. So a 9am ET would be better for you. Are you ready (allowed) to sing at that time?
DivaDiane wrote: "Ah yes, of course, Leonie. So a 9am ET would be better for you. Are you ready (allowed) to sing at that time?"It would be fine. I often practice before work after warming up in the shower - nice and warm and humid. And for me of course, it will be 11pm at night.
Hei! I can teach how to taste wine & some wine basics (I work at a winery, with my WSET3). Or quantum computing/ai development.
Okay, so to remind everyone, we're on at 9 am ET THIS SATURDAY. The line up is:
Diane - Zoom and Voice. Diane, reminder you can have max 15 minutes, ideally 10 for this!
Allison - Goodreads basics for superusers
????? No one has confirmed! anyone have a 5 minute spot they want to fill?
Allison - 5 minute napkin folding for every occasion
So as you can see, we'll be at max 35 minutes. I've set up the Zoom meeting so that you can join whenever if you'd like to make sure it works first (in the calendar link above) So presenters, please join a bit early!
If this is fun, we'll then start sign ups for our next round, which can go a bit longer :)

I'll confirm that I'll be there. I am happy to take 5 minutes for something random - maybe Australian native birds in our garden (I have some fairly poor pictures I've taken out the back window) or something physio related if you like. Sprained ankles? Knee injuries? Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?
I should be able to be there. If I present on Japanese words though, I think I'd go closer to 10 minutes, so I can save it for when there is more time.
Is someone who wants to join this new to Zoom, as in isn't sure how to use it to join?World clock for meeting time in your time zone.
It's nearly time! The room should be open already if folks want to ensure they can get on, and I'll login shortly just to be available.
If you'd like to join in my napkin tutorial, please have a napkin (or any 1-3 foot square piece of cloth -- a paper napkin should work, a paper towel likely will not) and a napking ring or bit of ribbon/twine/yarn.

I had no idea we'd get so much technical info from Diane! That was super interesting! Is there a website or YouTube channel or something I could check out for more (casual) info about how our voices work? Just for general interest, I'm not taking singing lessons :)
Anna wrote: "I had no idea we'd get so much technical info from Diane! That was super interesting! You can check out my teacher's website (he's long passed, but his essays are still up there): https://corneliusreid.com
There's a podcast, so you can hear the master give some lessons, but if you scroll down past the new edition of one of his books (it's pink), you'll find short essays on all manner of vocal topics; Pedagogy, Functional Vocal Training, "Forward" placement, Aesthetic judgement, the Chest Register, the Falsetto etc.
Glad you all enjoyed it and I could go on for hours, I think.
Was so much fun! I really enjoyed last night (or yesterday morning, or yesterday afternoon depending on your timezone), and I had quite a giggle this morning, as I left Alison's last 'napkin fold' on the kitchen bench last night, and was greeted by it this morning. 😂😂😂
Yes, thank you all for yesterday, or whenever it was for you.I hadn't been expecting to find to new corners of Goodreads groups, but I wasn't aware of the list of notification settings for threads I followed were all in one place. Just never bothered to scroll past that massive widget. (Why is that even in the "Edit Membership" page anyway?) They really do like to hide things, don't they?
I'm so glad you all enjoyed it! I did, too.
I think the pilot has proven a success, let's plan for the rest of the season!
And by that, I mean September.
Volunteers? Who has something--be it professional skill, hobby, knack, passion or passing fancy--that they'd like to share with the group?

I will volunteer to talk about something. Maybe birds we see in our backyard. Not really anything to do with my work life, but there will be pretty pics.
(I rambled about emus in response to Leonie's post, and Goodreads decided to censor me. Probably for the best.)
Anna wrote: "(I rambled about emus in response to Leonie's post, and Goodreads decided to censor me. Probably for the best.)"But emus are incredibly funny! And sadly, we don't have an emu in our backyard...
They really are :) I was hoping that wild emus frequently visited your backyard, but I will keep my fingers crossed that one jumps the fence on the day you are live!
Anna wrote: "They really are :) I was hoping that wild emus frequently visited your backyard, but I will keep my fingers crossed that one jumps the fence on the day you are live!"If it's the same time as the last one, it'll have to be a nocturnal emu!
Can emus even tell time? Or daylight from night? I know they lay eggs in the snow in the US, because it's summer in Australia! :D(Fine, I'm taking my off topic emus somewhere else.)

haha
So! We have 15 minuts of programming! Who else has a hobby, knack, skill, or fun thing they can talk about for 5 minutes?

I can do a short tutorial on how to make marigolds with crepe/tissue paper. They are used often for día de los muertos ofrendas/altars, but can be used to decorate anything. I think I could get it down to 5 minutes…@Leonie I’m very excited to see your backyard birds! On my balcony (I’m in condo/apartment) we get a lot of different sparrows, starlings, chickadees, cardinals, and some morning doves.
Ann, we have lorikeets, rosellas, Indian mynahs, noisy miners, magpies, willy wagtails, satin bowerbirds, blue faced honey eaters, wattlebirds, crested pigeons, galahs, sulphur crested cockatoos, spotted pardalotes, and currawongs. There are others as well, who are more seasonal. (I saw a bin chicken yesterday!)And apparently Australian birds are actually rather noisy compared to most birds elsewhere.
And for a complete change of topic, I could talk about complex pain. But that might be a bit triggering if someone has it.Or ankle injuries. Or knees. Or something else physio if people think it might be interesting.
I simply love intelligence and sharing. people who can and are willing to share something of which they have a personal passion or expertise is just one of the delights of being a social creature. so birds and physio both sound good to me!
i think I'll rope my sister in to do a talk on how to care for and repair books
