Call Me If You Get Lost, which I’m going to abbreviate as CMIYGL, is Tyler the Creator’s 6th studio album, following up the 2019 release of Igor. The first hints of CMIYGL’s arrival were billboards with the name of the album and a phone number displayed. When called, the phone number played a conversation between Tyler and his mother. An associated website was also discovered, and Tyler tweeted out the phone number, which confirmed that this was official. The full release of the album was preceded by the release of two singles, “Lumberjack” and “WusYaName”. Both leaned into two very different styles, with “Lumberjack” leaning into a grittier hip-hop sound akin to Tyler’s earlier work, with “WusYaName” taking the more soulful approach of his more recent albums. As hinted by the two singles, CMIYGL incorporates a huge variety of styles including synths, jazz, R&B, and even a brief appearance of reggae. The album also had many impressive features from artists such as DJ Drama, Lil Wayne, Pharrel Williams, Ty Dolla Sign, Lil Uzi Vert, and Domo Genesis, among others. With strong performances, production, and core ideas, CMIYGL is one of my favorite albums from Tyler, and what I think is one of his best.
