Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hi sorry I'm slightly late putting these threads up.

We will continue with our two-thread format, one without spoilers (any spoilers must be in spoiler tags), and one with open Regency Buck spoilers (spoilers for other books would need to be in spoiler tags). This thread will be the spoiler free thread. We don't want to spoil a first read for anyone!

So, is this anyone's first read?
How many times have you read this title?
What format are you using this time?

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments I've read this one less frequently than many others of my favourites - probably about a dozen times since my first reading when I was about 14.

I'll be reading it on Kindle on my iPad, because the font size on my books is now just too tiring!

The cover above is the one I have on my iPad but I've had about 4 different versions going back to a Pan paperback in the 1960s.

I know this is the one that creates controversy (view spoiler)
but personally, that incident doesn't bother me. I look forward to the discussions.

Doris (webgeekstress) | 53 comments I *think* that this may have been my first Heyer. I haven't reread it as often as some of the others, mainly because I don't like Judith much. I do, however, enjoy it for its inclusion of Brummel, the Duke of York, and the Prince of Wales. It's fun to see them existing in Heyer's world in real life, instead of just offstage.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4146 comments Sorry, I don’t own a copy, and my library only has an ebook, currently unavailable, so I won’t be able to read along - too many other library books to get to, also. Enjoy! I’ve read it a couple times, but don’t remember much - it’s definitely not a favorite, I don’t remember much humor.

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments I have read this a few times, but cannot remember how many times, and it will be on my kindle.

This is not one of my favorites, and I am interested in seeing if I enjoy it more this time :D

Julie | 233 comments A first read for me, Kindle version for me too!

Jackie | 1730 comments I've read it many times, never one of my favorites, and for some reason it the library ebook I checked out won't load on my kindle (the internet is working: I downloaded something else) so I will have to read it on (in?) my chromebook. I already don't like this as it doesn't hold my place if I close the window. First World Problem!

Sheila (in LA) (sheila_in_la) | 401 comments My second time reading this one. I know I enjoyed it the first time, when we embarked on the reading the Regencies in order adventure.

I’ll be reading the Sourcebooks paperback.

Teresa | 2189 comments Haven't read this in forever so I'm thinking it wasn't a favourite. I won't get to it for a few days.

Regency Buck (Alastair-Audley, #3) by Georgette Heyer

This is the one I'll be reading.

I own this cover as well.

Sheila (in LA) (sheila_in_la) | 401 comments I began reading it Thursday night after finally making it to the library when they were open (note to self: remember to check the website before heading there).

I remember why I like this one but I agree that Heyer sneaks in a lot of period information, and sometimes it feels clunky. Judith visits to Worth to have a serious conversation about Perry and we learn all about snuff, which she is--to me--unaccountably interested in.

Beau Brummel is a lovely character, though.

Jackie | 1730 comments She is going to use snuff taking to make herself more fashionable: an unusal affectation to make her stand out, even though she doesn't actually like it. yuck!

I definitely agree about Beau. I like her portrayal of him. I saw Stewart Granger play the part once in an old black and white movie and that's who I picture when I read about him in the story :)

Sheila (in LA) (sheila_in_la) | 401 comments Agreed—yuck! But at least it does fit into the story, something I did not pick up on. :)

I always hoped to come across Beau again in another GH novel (view spoiler)

OMG! One of my favorite Stewart Granger movies (1954)! A young (and very beautiful) Elizabeth Taylor has a nice role as a very fictitious lady. As a matter of fact, most of the movie is bad history, but it is so elegantly done that the viewer loses track of that aspect of the story. Peter Ustinov was wonderful as the Prince Regent.

Snuff-taking doesn't appeal to me, but I've seen many, many people - especially young women with a fascination for the fashionable world they've only heard about - who take up affectations as a way to show how fashionable they are. Food or drugs or clothing styles or music that they don't particularly like, that sort of thing. Sometimes they develop a taste for it, sometimes they grow out of the need to stand out in the circles they aspire to.

Definitely Barb. Peter Ustinov was a wonderful actor.

Snuff-taking doesn't..."

Years ago one of my Uncles wanted to give up smoking so he started taking snuff. Oh my Lord!! Everytime he left after a visit the floor, the chair and sometimes the curtains would be covered in the stuff as well as himself. We actually encouraged him to go back on the cigerattes!!! Awful stuff!

Yuck indeed: this is the very thing GH lampoons Claud Darracott for in The Unknown Ajax - always on the lookout for some new quirk to make him famous, but only succeeding in making himself look a twit! She must have gone off the idea between writing this book and that.

Sheila (in LA) (sheila_in_la) | 401 comments Making more progress on this book--and am amused by how important snuff becomes to the plot!

Jackie | 1730 comments I've come to the part I like least and bogged down. I won't say more since it's a spoiler.
