read in the early 90's but think the book was 80's.. want to say it had a snow swept mountain on the cover but that might be wrong. Kevlar throat collar under skin to prevent being choked. people want him to go out and win the world for them. world is post apocalyptic where weapons are mostly swords and everything has become feudal where the strong rule...people in mountain still have technology. guy has to fight people he knows and once called friends who no longer recognize him with the changes people in the mountain made to him. Remember they basically made his bones unbreakable but dont remember how. He was someone close to the people he was sent to take down but i dont remember the exact relationship. people in the mountain want to restart society with the tech they have but need to be in control of the warlord like society that exist first. A girl helps train him to use his new abilities at the beginning before he leaves the mountain. would make a great video game now that i think about it. been looking for years. accidently gave away in a bag of books to local library. looked for a few years hoping it would come back to the loan a book section

This sounds very much like Sos the Rope by Piers Anthony. Probably best to buy the entire trilogy, though: Battle Circle

Thank you so much....that was the book and I actually enjoyed it again tremendously...was really afraid it was going to be like watching an old 80s beloved tv show and being disappointed....but have continued to Var the stick and loving it...
