Roberta,
Thanks for coding info.
Carol,
One of my clients was raised in the South during prohibition.
His grandpa and dad made moonshine in the barn. Even the
local police swung by to buy some. The chickens got in the
mash (?) of the moonshine & got drunk. He said it was so
funny to see!

I'm using a cane right now for when I first get up from sitting. It takes me a couple of minutes to be steady on my feet.
HR-ML, fingers crossed you get your walker.
Just wanted to wish everyone Happy Holidays and hope you and you families have safe and healthy holidays. It is actually snowing here this morning (not a lot), but our son (who lives in LA) is happy to see it.
Same to you, Roberta2. And if you want a bit of fun and are a fan of comedian Nate Bargatze, go to our politics thread for the link I put there.
A Lady for a Season by Melissa Addey

Started this one. Thanks Carol for the rec.

BJ---
Carol has good ideas & good recs. This was a traditional romance until they got engaged.

Okay, I know I should post this question in a television/movie thread, but I can't find it. That's probably due to my general ineptness with most sites (I have survivor-level social media skills and that's about it!)Anyway, I'm thinking about watching All Creatures Great and Small on PBS (loved the books when I was young).....BUT! I'm not going to watch it if there are frequent (or often) stories about animals dying despite the vet's help etc. Sad animal stuff really brings my mood down :( and with everything going on in the U.S. right now I really don't need any mood-bringing down assistance!!
So has anyone watched it, and if so can you let me know if there's a lot of sad animal stuff? I think I could deal with a smidge, but not much more than that! Thanks in advance...
Cath,
It is mostly upbeat. The vets are very ethical & want to keep the animals healthy to prevent emergencies if possible. There is humor especially when the farmer thinks he/ she knows more than the vet. Or when the animal outsmarts them both.
The new season starts tonight on PBS. The head vet's bro and
highly valued associate, James, are serving in WW2. The newer
vet is a know-it-all lacking people skills.

I just read this book (from Netgalley) that I highly recommend, although it was a little hard to follow. It skips from character to character, and also from the time the characters were children to when they were adults. He also wrote A Man Called Ove. My Friends Available May 20.
HR-ML wrote: "Cath---Hope you enjoy it."
I really am enjoying it! I have PBS Passport so I was able to start at the beginning. Your description was spot-on - thanks, again :) Already into Season 2!
Maybe I should give it another shot. I loved it and watched it until, well I can't say, would spoil it for Cath. Maybe I need to get over that plot point that I objected to.
Cath---
I have PBS Passport too- dramas, comedies, nature shows,
documentaries. Oh my. All Creatures Great is a quality show-
glad you like it.
This season Audrey the housekeeper for the vets became a
volunteer air raid warden. She patrols 2 nights a wk and
reminds people in the village to use their black-out screens.
Her boss warden is a micro manager. A female farmer's cow
was hit by a car! Boss told female farmer to paint white stripes
on all her cows. Seigfried the head vet told boss warden he
was nuts b/c the paint is toxic and cows like to lick
themselves and other cows! Duh!
I wish Audrey & Seigfried would fall in love. She is calm when
he does not think before he speaks to the vets he employs.
He seems interested in her.

Have you checked WalMart? If you bought one yourself, would they reimburse you? The prices on the one I saw seemed very reasonable.

ETA I just realized I was looking at a previous post. Goodreads is acting kind of wonky, It doesn't take me to the last page I had been on.
The PBS series seems like one I'd like to watch. I literally have not watched TV in possibly a decade. I may get myself a TV and have it set up in the living room. My son is still a light sleeper and goes to bed between 8 and 9 PM, but since I am retired I can watch TV during the day. Wowsa.
For the Love of Moose: How one man's trash became my treasure
Enjoyed this true-life animal rescue story. The lady owner was sensitive
to the needs of each one of her rescued dogs.
Cher: The Memoir, Part 1
A good read, although I had it in audio book form.

Hi all! I just joined the group to pick y'alls brains. I am taking a break from PNR, Fantasy and Romantasy with a deep dive into a Sherlock/Watson historical romance genre (I watched Ms Scarlet & the Duke and I was hooked) and so I've been reading Deanna Raybourn, Andrea Penrose, Sherry Thomas, Ashley Weaver.I'm wondering if there are any series that feature "forbidden partners" that work together to solve the mystery aka totally opposite in status (the female is a "lady", the male is a criminal from the streets) but they can't stay away from each other even if their love is doomed.
So you know, angsty. :)

I picked up Moose because I'm dealing with an 18 y/o pup with old age problems.

I'm sure you'll get a list from some of the posters here. In the meantime, maybe check out The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies, about two ladies that are old maids that get involved with a lord who's wanted for murder.

The later books of Jayne Fresina are all wonderful. The Peculiar Folly of Long Legged Meg is close to what you're looking for.
Hi Carrie--
Welcome to our little corner of GR. I love Miss Scarlet, but miss the Duke.
PBS sent me an email. Moses returns for the next season!
A Simple Case of Seduction sexy.
Bespoke
Make Me Yours
First 2 quirky mysteries, & lastly the mystery of love. No
criminal heroes here. Did GR reviews on each one.

Love, love the hero in book #3. Did GR reviews.
Happy reading whatever you decide.
Worth Any Price Nick was a dangerous man.
Some liked this more than I did.

I'm so excited! While I do miss the Duke, Moses and Scarlet have waaaaay more chemistry in my opinion and I'd love it if they had a secret affair. Sigh. ha! Thank you!

Lisa Kleypas is a favorite of mine and was the only "historicals" I would read when I first dipped my toe into the historical romance genre. I've been very hit or miss with other authors so I'm delighted I have found so many great 'historical mystery with a dash of romance' options on my own. I keep thinking I'm going to burn out and switch genres but instead I just want MORE! Including, my aforementioned criminal/lady aka Moses/Scarlet. :)

I really like Karen Odden too. These titles match some of what you are looking for, Carrie:
A Lady in the Smoke
A Dangerous Duet
A Trace of Deceit
Carrie---
You are welcome.
We have smart cookies on our thread, with varied interests. And they make good book recs. I always keep in mind a book review is subjective. A book friend shared on another forum, that she could have done without the oral pleasure in A Simple Case (above). To
each her /his own. The hero in that one was v. masculine & crazy in love: a good combo. Not a cookie cutter story, which I liked.
Friends here got me interested in mysteries. Or mysteries w/ rom.

Hi all - if you like historical murder/mysteries you might likeDarcy Burke.
Just finished A Whisper of Death
.It has a little hint of 'magic' when the H receives a head injury. I liked that he is titled, she is not. He is very respectful, and likes her. The plot was great.
BJ,
I respect your opinion as always. A great plot is appreciated after some so-so reads.
And it's KU in US. Thanks!

Thank you!
I very much enjoyed Antonia Hodgson's Thomas Hawkins mysteries. The Devil in the Marshalsea is the first one. There are four in all.
And I love Elizabeth Loupas's historical fiction. The Second Duchess, The Flower Reader, The Red Lily Crown: A Novel of Medici Florence
Carol Carr's India Black series. The main character is a brothel madam and is quite an intrepid character. India Black is the first book. There are four altogether.
Ooh, thanks, OLT. I have been looking for new historical mysteries. I'm going to start with the Hawkins' series.
I also recommend Lindsay Faye's Timothy Wilde series, about NYC in the 1800s. The Gods of Gotham, Seven for a Secret, and The Fatal Flame. Very gritty mysteries. Not lighthearted or bubbly, but very good.
