I haven't started it either - got it for later.

Right now I am re-reading a book by Carla Kelly, and enjoying it all over again.

The Wedding Ring Quest

Loved The Wedding Ring Quest all over again. I can't think of anything offhand that I haven't liked by Carla Kelly, and have re-read many of her books more than once. The main characters are a man home from the sea after a couple of decades with his young son whom he is getting acquainted with. (Napoleonic Wars) He lost part of a leg (and the foot) and has a peg leg. He was a Captain.

A young woman is travelling with them on the stage and they get acquainted. She is searching for a ring that was sent out in a particular fruitcake - except that the ring needs to be returned. Unfortunately, the baker of the cakes doesn't know what cake it went in or where it was mailed.

The captain and his son decide to go on the quest with her, since neither of them are in a hurry to get to their destination.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Glad you enjoyed it. Sounds interesting, thanks for info.

Cath | 953 comments I loved Carla Kelly's Reforming Lord Ragsdale. I keep meaning to read more of her books.

I'm not reading an HR right now, but I am reading the Lark Rise to Candleford trilogy. I had thought I would really like it, and I don't dislike it, but it's turning into kind of a slog for me, and I do find quite a bit of Flora Thompson's prose to consist of awkward meandering sentences, which is frustrating! After this I'm going to watch the TV series, which I heard is really good.

The Wedding Ring Quest --remember really liking that title. Maybe a reread? I can't seem to concentrate on anything right now. I did watch season 2 of Lidia Poet.

I have so many books that I want to re-read. It's relaxing. I'm working part-time and it's a bit stressful since so many things are breaking all at once. :( I am not working past December, though. Knowing the end is near makes me happy.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Just finished reading RANSOM by Julie Garwood.
I don’t often do reread. I still loved this story about Gillian and Brodick.

Carol | 2793 comments I just listened to What Does It Feel Like?. It's a short novella that I got from my library's Libby. It's a fictionalized memoir of her fight with neuroblastoma (deadly brain tumor) and how her husband and five children dealt with it. Funny in spots. Heart wrenching in others.

Hitchcock's Blondes: The Unforgettable Women Behind the Legendary Director's Dark Obsession
Reading this one. Hitch liked women in peril in films. And then she needed to 'redeem' herself. Author's words- not mine.

Hitch had a wife who could write, edit, and produce for film,
but she mostly took a back-seat. He was smitten w/ blondes
and generalized about them. He at times made the
leads uncomfortable or acted more sophisticated than he/ she.
He took endless takes of a scene. Especially "The Birds" where
he seemed sadistic toward Tipi. She had no acting experience.
But in his mind's eye he envisioned what he wanted.

she doesn't die. It's a memoir of what she and her family went through. How she dealt with memory loss. It's also a tribute to science that has now found a treatment for neuroblastoma.

HBW@---
What a waste of your hard-earned money! To have to do the new flooring twice.

Hi all---
How to categorize audible books? I got a reduced rate thru Jan 2025. Anyhow under
Audible Originals: Sleep Sound (with) Richard Armitage. I don't mean to be rude/ crude but I'm quite sure seeing those eyes and hearing that voice would keep me awake.

I've fallen 2x inside 7 days. You may recall I have a form of vertigo.
A couple days ago I rushed to sit down, landed on my knees
& hit my head on the wall (of computer room.)

I am finishing the year w/ 2 books- bio of Paul McCartney & expose of
a greedy coal mine operator who did not maintain worker safety. My late paternal Grandpa was a coal miner.

Well, at least it is only a relative small piece, compared to the rest of the room. It will still cost several hundred dollars. They had to custom order three pieces that are used to join the planks at doorways. We have a double door and an archway that will require the join.

Hey, please consider getting a walker. You may not have to use it all the time. I have some issues with walking occasionally and right now is one of those times. The worst part is when I first stand up - I'm unsteady on my feet. I'm planning on getting one very soon. I can keep it by my bed at night time, and have it with me when I plan on sitting down for a while.

message 3140: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments HR-ML, Did you get a diagnosis for your vertigo? Is there any treatment? A walker might be a good idea, as HBW suggests.

Roberta, my vertigo dx is BPPV, an inner ear disorder. I misplaced the paper w/ the exercises. Am stiff as a board, my neck& upper back hurt. Need to see my MD. Have avoided my chiro-read they sometimes adjust your neck- resulting in a CVA- which I don't need. Your Grandpa worked in the mines at 11? Lordy!!!

I tried for 4 mos. to get a DME co, to get Medicare approval for a walker.! The DME co. was in Cincinnati (where I live) and their intake in Columbus. They acted like it was an imposition for them to call intake! I surprised the DME people in person- and told them to stop their efforts as I no longer trusted them as they can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I hung in w/ their co. b/c I admire my primary care MD who recommended this chucklehead co,

BTW- I obtained DME for social work clients (in 3 jobs) - usually took less than a week! But I had easier access to MD too, also the chart.

I'm thinking about one like this. I would use it when I get out of bed or stand up from a chair until I get steady on my feet, in the house. In the supermarket, I have a buggy to hold onto.

message 3145: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments HR-ML, you should request another copy of those exercises or find them online. Look for Brandt-Daroff maneuver and Epley maneuver. I've had a few positional vertigo episodes myself, with the world flying in circles around me and nausea to boot. But those exercises really help to get the inner ear crystals back into the correct position.

When I had my episodes with vertigo I was afraid I had Meniere's disease, which runs in my dad's family. That one left two of my aunts deaf before they died, but I think I'm safe, at least so far. Be thankful your vertigo is BPPV. It's much more treatable.

Thanks all for info. I need a walker for distance IE in a store (my Kroger's
is HUGE!) at MD office (requires a fair amt of walking) . I need to steady myself. My biggest fear- I will fall on concrete. I had a CT scan yesterday, could have used a walker. The hosp. wheelchairs were odd- with tall/ long backs, only little wheels, or I could have borrowed one to self-propel myself.

The walker I need is called a rollator, it is on wheels, & has a seat, if I need to catch my breath.

My late bro tried to volunteer for Vietnam (before he got wise to the whole story) and the Army rejected him due to his Meniere's.

In college I got dizzy spells, visual distortions & sick on my stomach @ times-
vertigo + migraines? Now days I get migraines 3-4 times a year.

My BFF has vertigo. She used to get it occasionally and it would last a week or so. Last year when she got it, it wouldn't go away. She's tried various meds and PT to no avail. Falling is a big problem for her, too. She's been resistant to using a walker but does sometimes use a cane, which is not great.

I did read something that connected vertigo being a little studied side-effect of Covid.

message 3148: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Hr-ML, I asked my husband about your condition, and he says (like OLT) that physical therapy can help. Hopefully, you can get the walker. Maybe if you harass them enough, the insurance company will pay.
My husband suggests they may not be coding correctly, because usually if you have the right code, medicare will pay. I recently had surgery that was at first denied, and when I went to see my surgeon a few months ago, she typed in a frenzy and suggested 2 or more codes for her office assistant to try. It was approved.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Yes, it was around 1910 or 1911 that my 11 year old grandfather went to work in the mines. He pushed the coal carts on the tracks for his first job. He was down in the mines the entire day. I can't even imagine what that was like.
