Carol | 2793 comments I'm thinking that she doesn't. She's not letting go of her background and picking up social abilities very fast.

And April has to do a lot of catching up to be anywhere near acceptable socially. May that's not the direction this is heading.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I haven't read the Jane Steen books but I have the first one. It is currently free in the US and the second one is 2.99.

Ya'll are going to kick me out of the group. I'm still alternating reading and listening to the Murderbot series. It really is good.

I did read a book in a mystery series I like. The main character is a 30-odd year old police woman in Canada who hears a woman caling for help, and goes to help. She is attacked herself, and then suddenly finds herself on a street in Edinburgh, Scotland, and it is somewhere in the mid 1800's. I recommend it. The series is in Kindle Unlimited.

Also this is how my life is going right now:

Today, I lost my debit card. I was only able to buy my groceries because I happened to have one - one! check left. Before I went to get the groceries, I had to get my car jumped off before I could leave. I'd left a light on in the car. It has not been my day.

I'd ordered checks this week but it may take a while for them to come in.

Hopefully the card is probaby somewhere in the house.

What a day! One day I went to 3 stores and misplaced my debit card. Luckily they had it for me at store#3. Sometimes we have too much to do & are fatigued.

My son had it - he is supposed to buy clothes but naturally has not gotten a round tuit. (around to it) I left it with him and borrowed my husband's card.

I am so far behind. I haven't done the taxes yet.

Carol | 2793 comments For those interested Petteril's Wife is due out April 25. It's the 5th of a 5 book series. So, we'll know. If that's April on the cover, she certainly looks different.

Carol | 2793 comments I just got this from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093Y2YCJV?...
Someone suggested this and it's great. I put my Kindle or Fire on it and then put the thing on my lap if I'm sitting or tummy if I'm lying down. It comes in a cheaper non-folding style but I really like this because I can easily adjust the angle and fold it up so it doesn't take up a lot of space. No sore hands. No sore neck. Can't believe I waited this long.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Apparently, it's about his daughter.

message 3014: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments Yes, I have read it. I enjoyed it but not quite as much as the Seeker series. The Seeker has fled to the New World in this one and the story revolves around his daughter and her precarious position because of her “treasonous” father. And I don’t believe it’s the end of the story. The last chapters hint of more to come with regard to Damien. Worth the read for anyone who has read all the Seeker books.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments This book seems almost as long as the unabridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo, but it's excellent. I'm at the halfway mark.
I posted the description below.

Rednecks

A historical drama based on the Battle of Blair Mountain, pitting a multi-ethnic army of 10,000 coal miners against mine owners, state militia, and the United States government in the largest labor uprising in American history.

Rednecks is a tour de force, big canvas historical novel that dramatizes the 1920 to 1921 events of the West Virginia Mine Wars--from the Matewan Massacre through the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest armed conflict on American soil since the Civil War, when some one million rounds were fired, bombs were dropped on American soil, and the term “redneck” would come to have an unexpected origin story.

Featuring real-life and invented characters--men and women, adults and children, Black and white and immigrants from many countries who worked in the dangerous West Virginia coal mines--Rednecks tells a dramatic story of rebellion against oppression. Taylor Brown introduces crucial point of view characters: "Doc Moo" Muhanna, a Lebanese-American doctor (inspired by the author’s own great-grandfather) who serves the mining camps; Frank Hugham, a Black miner who helps lead the miners' revolt; Frank's mother Beulah, who fights to save her home and her son; and true-life folk hero "Smilin" Sid Hatfield, a sharp-shooting sheriff who dares to stand up to the “gun thugs” of the coal companies. These and other characters come fully to life in a propulsive, character-driven tale that’s both a century old and blisteringly contemporary: a story of unexpected friendship, heroism in the face of injustice, and the power of love and community against outsized odds.

Through inspired portraits of real-life characters including legendary union organizer Mother Jones, to dynamic battle scenes set in the West Virginia hill country, award-winning novelist Taylor Brown reimagines one of the most compelling events in 20th century American history.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm 3/4's of the way through Rednecks and it's amazing. The title 'Rednecks' is because the workers who joined the union wore red bandannas around their necks.

There was also a big political side to the miners versus the owners of the mines. Coal was a main source of fuel to heat houses and for industry. The big business owners and the government were on the side of the coal companies. Strikes were dangerous to them.

Oh, yeah. What got me was when the President of the United States was on board to send troops to break up the strike. Coal was king.

HBW---

I have never cared for "redneck" used in a negative way. Blue collar workers learn a trade and take pride in their work. My late FIL was a carpenter & in the Union. He had very little interaction w/ people of color. If he made a hateful comment, I called him on it. I think he admired my guts.

OLT | 2480 comments My apologies to anyone who might be offended by this short The New Yorker video of a father explaining the f-word to his daughter. I just found it hilarious, for some reason. Talk about over explaining. You have to watch it all the way through to not miss anything. Maybe I am just perverse. At least it took my mind off politics for seven minutes.

Thank you - I got it, although I need another book like Newcastle needs more coal.

I'm still listening to this wonderful audiobook. Just finished the first story (by Kate Quinn), which takes place in Pompeii 79 AD. A young woman (age 15) was betrothed to an older man, but she was in love with the young man painting her picture. Meanwhile the earth is shaking on and off. Vesuvius is waking up.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I finished the audiobook of A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii. One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.

I started listening to There There but am taking a break from it - it's a bit grim. American Indians living in Oakland, CA, most live in poverty and many are alcoholics. The main narrator is a boy who was born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

I'm currently listening to A Year of Ravens

Britannia: land of mist and magic clinging to the western edge of the Roman Empire. A red-haired queen named Boudica led her people in a desperate rebellion against the might of Rome, an epic struggle destined to consume heroes and cowards, young and old, Roman and Celt . . . and these are their stories.
