Discussion of HR and other books. And recs.
I started listening to A Gentleman's Gambit and I don't know if it's worth my time to finish it. I looked over the reviews and see many did not finish it, while some loved it. Disappointed. I'll put it down for now.
Roberta2 wrote: "Carol, I didn't attempt to get it because of the bad reviews. It's too bad."I got it from the library Libby, so no financial harm. Just disappointed.
Do any of you remember a historical series where the main character was a woman who was ruined and was an actress? I'm pretty sure I recommended it here and now I can't remember the name of any of the books or the author. :( I'd like to see if the author has published any others.
Grrr. Usually I keep a list of authors I like on Amazon but I didn't find here in that list. Which I had stopped updating anyway. Possibly her first name is Carol? Or maybe not.
FYI, there are three Meredith Duran HRs on sale today for $1.99 each. Bound by Your Touch
The Sins of Lord Lockwood
A Lady's Lesson in Scandal
Roberta2 wrote: "All good books, OLT. Wish Duran would write something new."I'm not holding my breath. Her last post on her website was at the end of 2016, just before the release of The Sins of Lord Lockwood. I hope she's okay. Maybe she has seen the sorry state of HRs nowadays and just can't be bothered to write something of excellent quality and see it be underappreciated. Seems as if Jayne Fresina may be suffering from that.
Happy, Happy Birthday! That one’s a milestone and congrats! Hope you are feeling young and perky or at least in pretty good health. I know your mind’s in great shape.
Happy Birthday! You are already wise. Hope you get to sit with a nice cup of tea and read a good book or whatever else you want to do today.
OLT & Roberta2 & Shaz too,
Thanks for good wishes. In my case, young and perky has already left the station. I seldom imbibe, but today I bought a bottle of Kahlua. Every now and again I make hot, dark chocolate cocoa & Kahlua is a special add-on, when we have it on hand. I purchase a bottle 2-3 times a yr.
I am open to new adventures/ experiences. As long as my bod holds up.

That sounds good!

"Oh, to be young again." LOL. I know how you feel. I hit 80 in 2026.
Well, I turn 70 this September; I feel better knowing that you (OLT & Carol) are still so sharp at older ages. I keep reading thinking that will help.
Thanks HBW & Carol.

Happy birthday - sounds as if it was a good day for you.
Best wishes for a wonderful year with good books to read.
Age should not stop use from doing things. I think reading keeps our minds active.
Went on holiday to Spain, two weeks ago. Went with my two sister in law’s. Ages 64, 66, and 69. We all had a really nice time. One day we walked over 19,000 steps. Lots of shopping and eating out. Sitting outside reading and doing crossword and answering quiz questions about everything that happened over the years. We had some laughs with the answers that we came up with.
As we would say. Still live in the old dogs yet. 😂
BJ & Shaz---
Thanks for your good wishes. I need to get back to reading, I've
been streaming on Netflix. Shaz, I envy your walking. I need
3 surgeries (both knees, right hip) and it is painful to walk- but
I force myself to do chores in/out of the home. Our grocery
Kroger is huge and I'm there once a week & ditto for the
smaller IGA. I managed to lose a little weight over Christmas-
but I need to step it up. My SIL in Louisville just had a hip
surgery and is home rehabbing. She had her 1st hip surgery
at 48. She's small in size but has a big spirit and heart & we
are sisters.

HR-ML,I have a friend who had hip surgery in January, and she is doing well, and she isn't in terrible pain anymore. Hopefully, you will get one of the surgeries done this year and feel better.
Roberta2 & Cath,
Thanks for your posts.
SIL had a total hip replacement with 15 staples!!! Staples were taken out already. She listens closely to her MD. She's learned so much about hip surgeries, this is her 3rd one. Her metal level was too high, due to the part used in her last surgery. She has home PT.
I offered to help, but she already had a plan in place.

My sister in law at 69, who I was on holiday with, had a hip operation about 8 year ago. She went to the hospital about her knees. The surgeon told her it was her hip causing the knee problems. After the hip op her knees were better. Walking funny to compensate for her hip, was causing the problems with her knees. She is always busy doing something. So hopefully you will feel better after you op HR-ML
Hi Shaz---
I appreciate your support. I'm glad your sis-in-law feels and functions better.
Both of my knees are bone on bone, per X-ray. I read somewhere that soft drinks can wear out a person's bones & connective tissue. I thought I needed caffeine to stay awake b/c of my sleep apnea. Now I have Dr. Pepper about 2x a month. And coffee a few times per month. I still want to learn new things so am trying to have an open mind.
My sis-in-law is my cheerleader. I'm lucky to have her in my life.

If I could do it all over again, I would have majored in paleontology, taught college classes, gone on expeditions to find fossils and taken my students on fossil trips. Instead I majored in computer science (very popular job in the 70's). Still doing it. :sigh: I'll never forget the first fossil I found: part of a trilobite at the edge of a lake. It changed my vision of the world.

Yikes. Do you have surgery dates scheduled? I need 2 knee replacements, am thinking of going ahead and getting one of them scheduled - it may be months out. I once swore I'd go out with those knees but the pain and fall risk has changed my mind.
HR-ML wrote: "Shaz---I need to lose more weight first. I'm a chunky chick."
Yeah, that's what the orthopedic told me. I haven't lost a pound.
If the ortho doc said I need to lose additional wt. for hip replacement, likely
it's the same for knees too. In my last job ( I left in Nov. 2021) I felt vulnerable downtown with my wonky walk.
Paleontology sounds cool with the travel + science discoveries. But I'm more of a homebody.

Well, bearing in mind that I haven't read this yet, but I read the first few pages and liked it. Two books are on sale for 1.99 and 3 of the other books in the series are 99 cents. From the number of reviews, the series appears to have a following. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B...

You might Your Inner Fish: a Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body. It's also a 3 part series. I like the series better. I read it on my Fire and the illustrations were difficult to see.
Carol, I was wondering about the 3 part series when I found this: "He was host of the Emmy Award winning PBS miniseries "Your Inner Fish" which was based on his bestselling book of the same name. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2011."I'd like to see that.

Thanks for the reminder about My Octopus teacher. I've been meaning to watch it since I read Remarkably Bright Creatures, which would have been an exceedingly unremarkable book except for the character of the Octopus.
Not sure of others here like Mary Lancaster HR books? Just finished reading 4 in a 'new' to me series - Petteril's Thief
.There are 4 books available, hopefully another coming later this year.
Really enjoyed these short, clever stories - H cannot remember faces so his 'assistant' helps.

I just finished the fourth one, too. Good series. I haven't seen anything about when the fifth one is expected to be out. I think there are going to be 6 in the series.
I agree about the Petteril books. They are not bad. I’m not fond of Lancaster romances but these slight mysteries are okay. I do worry about the age and social differences between Petteril and April(?) if a romance develops in the future.
Has anyone read the 3rd Scott De-Quincy book by Jane Steen? The title is Lady Ambition's Dilemma: Book Three of the Scott-De Quincy Mysteries. I was reading the blurb about the book and realized I don't remember the first two books much at all. Does this mean I need to reread at least the first book in the series? And I am asking myself why I can't remember anything much about the first 2 in the series. It worries me.
