Thanks! I almost always dread any movie or book with a pet/animal in it b/c they are so often included as a device for upping the emotional intensity by killing them off. I skip scenes in movies or book passages, or even just give the entire movie/book a pass, for this reason.

Cath---

I agree 100%. Jeff Bridges did a newer version (at the time)
of a J. Wayne movie, "True Grit." IIRC his character overused
his horse and the horse died of exhaustion, dehydration
and exposure to the elements.

I can handle an animal dying of old age, but I don't like anything where animals are abused.

well if Jeff Bridge's character was supposed to be the hero of the movie, you can bet I would have hated him for treating his horse so horribly, and I would have turned that movie right off! Never saw "True Grit" but thanks to this warning, now never will, for sure!

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I was unpleasantly surprised to see that most of Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels books are out of print. :( Just a few of them are still available to buy as Kindle books.

Ditto on Mary Stewart which is just *wrong*.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I loved Lessons in Chemistry. I had to push through at the beginning because of what happened to him. I cried there.

Flowers from the Storm is a favorite. I also loved Kinsale's For My Lady's Heart. I wish she had written more books.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments In our family, we love the not so stellar movies where the dog doesn't die. I'm thinking of Dante's Peak with Pierce Brosnan and Independence Day with Will Smith to name a couple.

message 2659: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments HappyBookWorm, I didn't realize those books were out of print. I read many of both of those authors years and years ago.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I am reading the Lucinda Brant Alex Hasley books. I've read the first 2 and am getting a bit annoyed with his love interest. Hopefully, she doesn't irritate me as much in the next book.

Just read and really enjoyed this CR. A kisses only slow-burn.
No insta-sex or insta-love and had real convos. Please don't
judge this book by it's cover.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Happy Halloween to everyone who celebrated! I ate some chocolate. Phil bought several packages of Kit Kats, and alas, we only had three trick-or-treaters.

I just got this book because it had me laughing by the second page. It's free.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I also finished listening to Flowers from the Storm and now I want to listen to it all over again. Marvelous book and so was the narration. That ending. :shakes head: Perfect for Halloween.

:spoiler: When the duchess becomes pregnant with a new heir, the ghost of a large hound can be seen by one of the fireplaces in the castle.

Maddy wanted to know who the strange dog was. Jervaulx told her he had been around for a long time. (centuries, in fact)

Cath | 953 comments I'm reading Dragonwyck by Anya Seton, for a local book discussion group I participate in. I love the title in particular, and thought I'd really enjoy the book. But I'm about halfway through and unfortunately I'm not liking it that much :( Oh well

(currently I really can't stand the heroine, so I guess one thing that will keep me busy is hoping something - well, "bad" is too strong of a word - but anyway hoping things don't go well for her, lol)

Looks very interesting. Nice and short. My concentration isn't very good right now. The second and third books are audios on hoopla. So even better. I will get to them soon. Thanks.

I'm finally reading Long Legged Meg. So far, so good.

According to Twisted E-Publishing and also Fresina's blog, we are supposed to be getting The Tempests of Little Doings sometime. Unfortunately, it has been "coming soon" for far too long.

I quite reading Chemistry after the rape scene, which I though was handled to casually. A friend convinced me to continue reading it, so I did, and I loved it.

Flowers in the Storm was a big fav.

I think I'll skip Lady's Heart unless you give it raves. Not my favorite era.

I read the opening part of Lessons in Chemistry, and unfortunately, can't read that book. It brings out my homicidal tendencies.

Thanks for the feedback ladies! You all add so much to our discussions. I added a modern romance discussion thread here.

Thanks, Cheryl

Thanks Shaz & BJ,

We enjoy your observations. And I'm trying to store up wisdom from what members share here. I'm not super-religious, but I think God gives us many opportunities to meet in-person and on-line etc. So all here enrich each other. We were meant to 'meet.'

Did you have any suggestions RE the thread? I added a modern
romance & romance mystery thread today.

Shaz we DO have useless politicians here. 3 in Congress recently
announced they plan to retire. No doubt there will be more.

thanks, Cheryl

Carol | 2793 comments How about Not Romance But Really Good just for the heck of it? It would be for dealing with coming of aging and aging; NF science, bios, history; fantasy stuff, etc. Maybe person should specify what type of book it is when posting the title???

message 2689: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments We can’t have a different thread for each genre. How about not-historical/contemporary?

message 2690: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments OLT wrote: "We can’t have a different thread for each genre. How about not-historical/contemporary?"

That's what I was trying to do with Not Romance But Really Good. It would be one thread encompassing other stuff which readers liked. Naming the genre of each post on that thread would be a help to those interested.

Guilty as charged. I think I read more thriller/mystery than any other genre now. Author is more important to me than genre, although I try books by authors that are new to me also.

I'll read anything by Jodi Taylor who also writes under another name (fantasy and romance), Grace Burrowes (historical romance/mysteries), and Catherine Ryan Hyde (contemporary fiction). Seanan McGuire has two series out that I pre-order but her longest running series I just can't get into. :(

ETA I even read a little non-fiction. One of the most memorable books I've read in the last few years was this one: The Talk.

Sorry, I can talk books all day.

message 2694: by Carol (last edited Nov 13, 2023 10:48PM) (new)

Carol | 2793 comments The Talk was my first graphic novel. Worth the read. I've read a lot of Hyde's books. They are usually 4 or 5 stars for me. I tried Forster twice and just could not get into her books.

I have trouble finding the words I want to use. Spellcheck helps with spelling. Commas are a big problem. :-( OLT is really great at reviews. Love reading them.

Carol | 2793 comments I've been enjoying Sofi Laporte's novels. She has two series. They're modern regency, but not too modern. Her writing is good and original. Some are silly, some serious. At least when I pick up one of her novels, I don't ask myself if I've already read this. Try the Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues series. I think it's the best. KU
