Cath- sorry to hear RE your Mom. Clinical social workers are often avail virtually to assist the elderly client or his/ her family member. The rule of thumb: a clinical social worker licensed in Ohio serves those residing in Ohio. Or a clinical social worker could have a license in multiple states. Most states have a Commission on Aging, and this might be the place to start on resources. In my county, we have a Council on Aging (COA) which covers a 5 county area. Resources include adult day care, in-home services, and respite services as caregivers get worn out physically and mentally. Hope this helps.
RE message 2550.
(1) I think cults and crazy leaders take hold by using fear against
those who follow them: Moonies, Jim Jones, PTL Club, Napoleon, other autocrats Bin Lauden, Papa Doc, Marcus, Putin etc etc.
(2) And the leaders demand full authority& no one question them.

My late Mom had Alzheimer's. Sis and Dad took care of Mom
& I gave them respite on weekends. When Mom still walked,
we did a short nature hike or went to the mall to people-watch
and grab some food. I was the only one who got Mom into
the shower. I praised her for being clean and having pretty
hair. She used to flirt with my hubs!

something similar has been happening to me, but it's when I go to the "discussion" section and then click on "unread," which brings up only those threads in "discussion" which have new posts which I have not yet read.
I use the laptop/desktop version (not mobile, which may be different). Used to be, I could go in and click on "unread" and it would usually have a low number (just the number of recent ones which I had not yet read) and then I could get to the latest posts very quickly. Now it seems to count the total number of posts in the thread - the "unread" feature no longer works. A bit annoying!
Thought it must be my laptop, but maybe something glitchy in Goodreads...

I am also on a laptop, but I vote for glitchy in Goodreads.

I didn't love She's Up to No Good. Didn't like the MC and thought the story was over the top. It did have some funny parts. I can't Confino get old, so maybe she will stop portraying the grandmas as grouchy old women.

Did you try restating your Kindle? Sometimes it gets out of kilter.

I have books show on my kindle that aren't really downloaded. I know this because they won't open. I use my laptop to open Amazon, go to my contents, and send the book to my kindle fire. After it has been delivered, you will be able to read it. If you want it to be gone from your reader, you can press on it until you see a checkmark, then select update. Then you won't see it on your device but it will still be in your cloud.

Thanks for the rec, Carol. Have you tried any others in the series? They all sound as if they would be good reads. I like the maturity of the main female characters. 20-year-olds get tiring after a while.

I read them all and loved each one.. I felt like I lost my good friends when I finished No. 4.

That sounds good.

I finished Painting the Duke. Enjoyed the banter and conversations. It seems like she felt HR's need some basic tropes, like a duel and a bet. And definitely throw in two sex scenes for good measure, I gave it a 3, but see possibilities.

PBS list of some mystery/ thrillers.
I've not seen any of these, but the very last one.
Acquitted
All the Sins
Angel of Death
The Bank Hacker
Baptiste (French detective)
The Hour (1950s era Amsterdam thriller)
*Unforgotten (cold cases)
*Van Der Valk (modern day Amsterdam crime)
*OLT noted
Professor T- a brilliant Oxford criminology professor w/ OCD.
Also assists the police in solving crimes. His former lover, the female in charge of detectives, sorry can't recall her exact title, still longs for him and vice versa. He's a bit of a prig, but he's starting to listen to others and socialize a bit. His artistic Mum, who paints mostly dogs, is a hoot.

Oh, too hard to do. I can group them into cozy, procedural and thriller and pick two or three top shows in each one. Cozy: Recipes for Love and Murder (South Africa setting and lovely food) and Whitstable Pearl. Procedural: Unforgotten and Vera and Line of Duty. Thriller: The Fall, The Bridge
Oh, I don't know. Ask me tomorrow and I would probably have different choices.
My fav. American cop shows.
Homicide: Life on the Streets. (Setting is Baltimore).
Hill Street Blues.
Cagney & Lacey
Homicide was based on a gritty, non-fiction book. Homicide addressed cop burn-out & on/off discussions of spirituality. The topics of race & sexism led several episodes. One detective killed a proven baddie in cold blood.
Hill Street showed cop competition w/ each other and other law enforcement IE FBI, DEA, Secret Service. Many tense hostage negotiations. Latino Ray, 3rd in command, so wanted to become a precinct captain. Until it happened. So many cops showed bravado under various circumstances. This had humor too.
C & L
2 female detectives were underestimated by peers, superiors at times and the public. A sensitive story arc- Cagney was a date rape victim. Her male peers asked why didn't she use her gun? another weapon? She was already stressed to the max- she did not need their comments.

I watched the first of The Bridge online for free, but I have to pay to watch it. I am going to check the other titles to see if I can watch them on PBS or Netflix.
I streamed episode #1 on Bridge on Amazon.
From 2011-18 series. Saga was a female Swedish detective working
w/ a male Danish detective. They found a female DOA on
a bridge, at the border of the 2 countries. Saga's police peers consider
her a bit odd.
OLT, is this the one you referenced?
A cheap way to travel? I watch the Amazing Race.

I've been listening to a lot of audio books, especially at night. I find them very relaxing. I just set a timer and close my eyes. I do listen sometimes during the day, too. I watch mostly docs on TV.

I also liked a lot of British cop shows. Morse, Lewis, Midsummer Murders, Scott and Bailey, Life on Mars, Vera, and Strike.
Used to watch a lot of TV. These days I find it hard to find anything that interest me. Good job I have books and a kindle to keep my interest.
At least while we are reading it keep our brains working. Better then vegetating watching TV.
I used to watch the original Law & Order, then Criminal Intent,
SVU. I saw a couple episodes of The Closer, but Kyra's character
seemed to solve murders on her own, when in real life detectives
work together.
Sorry yesterday the computer involuntarily swallowed my words.

The Closer is one of my favourite American Cop shows. She was so clever and feisty, and I thought her parents were such good fun.

The hero in Shetland was played by Douglas Henshell and I find him gorgeous physically (which is weird because he’s not my usual “type”) and even more gorgeous politically, because he is a real leftie and writes great anti-Tory rants on Twitter. Ah. Must go. Best Wishes to you all.

I can relate to the girl because I was just a little younger than she was at the time the story takes place. My Jewish father thought I should go to secretarial school and not college because I was a girl. I lived in NYC and then NJ, so I recognize the area. Yeah, it hit home for me. And now I think I'm pretty with it like the grandma. Wasn't great literature, but I can relate.
I just sent a rec to a friend; I described it as a combination of Marjorie Morningstar and Lessons in Chemistry.
