HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm still re-reading Thea Harrison's Elder Races books. (again) She is such a fine, imaginative writer.

For the last few years, she has been struggling with an autoimmune disorder and had essentially stopped writing. She just published a book she has had in the pipeline for a year or two. I hope she gets well enough one day to start writing again.

Carol | 2793 comments I finished reading Miss Delectable and found it to be a pretty good mystery, but not so much as a romance. If I could, I would have given it a 3.5. I check my library's available books and found it was already wait listed, so I don't feel badly about their ordering it for me.

I listened toThe Other Bennet Sister and enjoyed it immensely. It may have been a little too long, but it kept my interest. The reader was fantastic. I feel it deserved a full 4 stars. Maybe even 4.5.

Salt Lake Joan (saltlakejoan) | 386 comments Hi everyone. I am new here. Used to be a member of several book forums in the old amazon forum days. Am reading The Paris Secret which I think is very enjoyable. It uses two time lines: present and WWII. For whatever I am finding the author's language very charming. Have a great day.

Her Baseborn Bridegroom
Reading this one, which I did not read on Kindle, deleted and had to
get again.

I enjoyed it and gave it a 4 rating. I started reading the second one in the series and gave up. Didn't like H or h or the queenn's court setting.

message 210: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Read A Marriage of Equals by Elizabeth Rolls. I enjoyed it and would give it 4 stars just for the subject matter--interracial marriage. Of course there is no way anyone in Regency England would have accepted it, but it was a nice fantasy read.

message 211: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Rolls wrote the book after reading about Dido Elizabeth Belle who actually did marry a white man.

Did you see the 2013 movie BELLE about Dido? I recommend it, if not.

message 213: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I did see Belle--loved it. Apparently, her husband wasn't a lawyer as he was in the movie. He worked as a steward or valet.

Historical Romance Review with Regan Walker

The criteria for above author's heroes
1) Make him handsome, preferably a bit rugged.
2) Give him an edge.
3) Make him manly, athletic, or at least able to handle himself in a fight.
4) Make him arrogant, at first.
5) Give him a soft underbelly, love for an animal or kid.
6) Give him an obstacle to overcome IE regain a title,
solve a mystery, a dangerous mission.
7) Make him slow to see that he needs a good woman in his life.
8) Make him reluctant to admit he's wrong.
9) Tell us how wonderful he is ( through the eyes of others).
10) Make him good at making love.

What do you think?

HBW--- Many men are arrogant, so that is a given. LOL!

For me I'd say:
3) He needs to be able to defend himself or his lady.
Bk I gave up on: BMF was good w/ a sword, not his fists.
Too much politics & confusing so I stopped.

5) though 7)

For some reason one story was odd: the warrior H was 28 &
still a virgin. His sire had been a manho.

message 220: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments I just finished THE SKYLIGHT ROOM. It's written by a little known author and one of my favs. All his books are either a 4 or 5 for me and this one was a 5. He is just such a great storyteller. He's not not a very prolific writer. I think I mentioned his last book before this, MOON CAKE, which I also gave a 5. None of his books are very expensive and I think most of the are KU.

message 221: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I read The Wrong Marquess the other day or it's more accurate to say I skimmed it hoping it would get better. It didn't. I can't recommend unless you want to get exceedingly frustrated while reading. I think I downloaded it because it was free or $0.99. Both the h and the H are written as idiots, in particular the heroine.

I'm so surprised you know of him. He has such a small following here and on Amazon. I loved all his books, except One Hit Wonder. I think that was his first attempt, so I forgive him.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I am trying to decide whether to buy more of Lisa Kleypas's Ravenel series which are on sale today. I never really got into this series. There is something missing for me in these books. I used to love her HRs. I read the first 3 of this series. Has anyone here read any of the others? Chasing Cassandra is only $1.00. Of course, I just hated the 0.99 cent bargain I read by Lorrett.

I personally am done with Lisa Kleypas and the Ravenels. Maybe someday if she abandons all the Wallflower and Ravenel characters and starts something entirely new I might pick her up again.

BJ (barbararhodes) | 123 comments I've just read this, thought the writing was very good, and enjoyed the slightly 'different' elements. It's set in Edwardian London and the h and H have special, often very uncomfortable talents. Slow burn romance, I liked both H and h.

Roberta2, I read that one and sadly, don't remember too much about it - which is better than remembering that I hated it. However, I read a page or two of it, and think I will re-read it. For a dollar, I think I'd take a chance on it.

Vivienne | 774 comments Carol,

#226 - *The Skylight* is above my $ limit for e-books, but it did lead me on to other books that are suggested below, and I found a book that is free (done by volunteers). It does have quality issues but I am hoping they won't put me off.

It is *Cranford * by Elizabeth Gaskell and I loved the British TV series of that.

And that lead me to the trilogy *From Larkspur to Candleford* by Flora Thompson, which was a fantastic British series my daughter and I watched when it screened on TV. This was under $3.00 for me so I bought it.

I would never have found these books if I hadn't looked for the one you recommended, so thank you very much. I am delighted with my new purchases.

Huh, but glad you found an ebook to read.

Most of Carillo's ebooks are 2.99 or 3.99. Skylight Room just came out so it's a dollar more, but it will come down I'm sure. I don't think it's your kind of novel anyway. It takes place in NYC village in the 1950's and now.

Honoria and the Family Obligation
We discuss any book, any time. Funny you brought up Honoria,
I just finished her story and enjoyed it. Right after I finished 3
serious non-fiction books in a row. The one about the FBI guy
& murder: I like how they put the puzzle pieces together to
catch the bad guy, but some descriptions were too gross.
