Roberta2 | 2383 comments Maybe we need to do more to help them? I am guilty of not writing reviews. I should get my daughter to do reviews as well. I check constantly to see if there are any new authors like Duran or Grant, but they all seem to be the same dreck.

Hmm, just noticed I never read her last book. Listening to it now.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Such a shame that authors have to write too many sex scene .
If I read steamy on the book review’s. It puts me off reading the book. If I am reading a story and they have lots of sexual context, I skip through them. Then I sometimes loose sight of the story.
Recently read Tracy Sumner series, I enjoyed the characters and story, but miles to many sex scene ruined it for me. I now avoid her books .

I am not good at writing reviews. So I just write short ones.

Miss Fleming Falls in Love: A Witty Historical Regency Romance
This was a new author. I liked the humor & kisses-only. The jaded hero enjoyed the company of the spirited heroine. His staff did a double-take when he smiled more often! He lost some of his stuffiness & superiority. This was free on KU in the US.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I like humor, conflict, well written characters, attention paid to the time period and current events, etc. What I don't like is a lot of sex. One is plenty and I don't mind zero. I also like a hero who protects his prospective bride and possibly impregnating her before marriage - if something happened to him - would be disastrous.

Four In Hand

I agree. Too many sex scenes are overkill- or wooden. I prefer
a protective hero.

My other book forum is Romance Book Lovers. I commented
on the above book which I read for the 4th time. This had a
hero & 3 men in his immediate circle, fall in love, each with 1
of 4 sisters. Each man did not want flirting or importuning by
an OM, yet he himself did these behaviors w/ his sister of choice!
Duh and duh!

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I will have a look for Miss Fleming. I have the book, Four in Hand and Tangled Reins by Stephanie Lauren.

w/o reservations. Sorry, I don't know the 2nd you listed.

I have SL , Bastion series to read, in my mad about a series reads. Hopefully I will read them before the end of the year.

BJ (barbararhodes) | 123 comments I don't know much about how much authors in USA earn, but a few years ago (maybe 10?) I read an article about Australian authors and how much they earned. The article 'quoted'(not sure where info came from, maybe tax office) that in the previous tax year, only 15 Australian authors earned $50K/plus.

The writer of the article said writing is just not a viable way to earn a living. Maybe that's got something to do with some writers just dropping out of sight - they find a job that pays better?

Bj- I wonder if a self-published author makes the same? less or more than a published one?

message 2365: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments I think it's the same as with many occupations like singers, athletes, screenwriters, and actors, if they're not the A-team, they don't make a lot of money. Of course, there is always someone who does. In the case of books, it's the publishers. Check out how our libraries are being screwed when they buy eBooks and audiobooks. https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/2...

My DIL is an author and involved in publishing industry. Authors with contracts can earn good income but self publishing is intense and return is unknown. As a reader, I have limits on how much I spend annually ($1000) so some books are just too expensive. Then my DIL gave me KU for a gift, it's wonderful. But I do worry about how much authors receive.

Carol | 2793 comments Many, many years ago, I noticed my house was filling up with books. When I moved, I sold most of them at at yard sale. Lo-and-behold. I looked at my new bookshelves and between my husband and me, my house was full of books again. I even tried switching to pocket books because they took up less room. It helped some.

What to do? What to do? Gee, maybe I'll try this new-fangled technology called Kindle. It was kinda big and clunky, but I good have hundreds of books and they didn't take up any room. The technology kept getting better and I was so hooked that I didn't even want to read a DTB if I could avoid it.

What? I don't really own my ebooks!? I can;t share them with my friends. Well, if I don't really own them and can't share them like a DTB, why bother buying them. Oh, I'll try KU. Pretty good but limiting. Wait! What! My library has ebooks I can borrow. And audiobooks which my friend recommend I try. I'm pretty happy now even though I usually have to wait too long to read a popular ebook because there are just so many choices of what-to-read that I don't mind it much.

Isn't technology wonderful? If only we can do something about publishers' greed and help out our public libraries, so they're not overcharged and they can serve the public better.

We are in some nice temp housing and making the best of it. The worst part of it is that there isn't a comfortable seat in the house. The dining room chairs come closest.

There has been no movement on our house. We are still waiting for abatement of the asbestos and lead based paint. The man in the small company who was supposed to do it had surgery.

Our house that had the fire is not altogether cleared. There is one bedroom and the tool room that they have not touched. There is a cedar chest still sitting in the den.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments We had a wedding in Pennsylvania on Monday; we drove Sunday through that blinding rain in New York and Pa. It was awful. And then the next day, we saw all the flooding that happened in New York and Vermont. It was awful. Fortunately for my niece who got married this past Monday, the weather cleared up. So, the day of the wedding was fine--hot and humid but no rain.

Roberta2----

I hope production companies take seriously the writers & actors
on strike. There needs to be fair rules on movie/ tv streaming
& use of AI. The film bureaus who arrange alternative venues
to Hollywood, caterers, costumers, transport teams, insurance
& accounting companies, attorneys etc will be adversely affected
by this strike. Producers need to share their profits.

Carol | 2793 comments Unraveled is on sale for .99.

message 2394: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Thank you, HR-ML. Producers and the corporations think they can replace the writers and actors with AI eventually. Bryan is now out of work because all production is shut down. There are some people still working wrapping up movies/shows that have already filmed. But, until new production starts, he is unemployed. Fortunately, he lives frugally, and he actually listened to mom years ago who told him to have savings for a situation like this.

The CEO of Disney said the 2 unions were asking too much.

I watched 48 Hours last night. And counted 4-5 producers in
the intro. Most TV shows & movies are top-heavy w/ producers.
Get rid of some producers and that frees up $ for writers &
actors.

IMO Hollywood does not appreciate enough the hard work of writers or film editors.
