Roberta2 | 2383 comments Carol,

My niece is in upstate NY, and their air was terrible also.

I saw that the El Nino is going to be strong this year, but I guess that might mean fewer hurricanes? Also, it supposedly means colder in the south and perhaps warmer in the north? I can't remember what it is supposed to mean for the winter where I am.

Yes, usually a strong El Nino means a weaker hurricane season, but I found this in a weather article online:

"Usually, an El Niño mutes hurricane activity in the Atlantic, giving relief to coastal areas in states from Texas to New England, Central America and the Caribbean, weary from recent record busy years. But this time, forecasters don’t see that happening, because of record hot Atlantic temperatures that would counteract the El Nino winds that normally decapitate many storms."

Bummer.

Now I can see blue skies. It's supposed to be okay tomorrow, so I can get a few errands done. The fires are still burning!!!

Carol | 2793 comments For the four years Orangeman was president, I feared he would drop an atomic bomb on some country. But all the while he was busy just collecting national secrets and stashing them away some place, so he could take them with him if and when he left. Just stunning.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Carol wrote: "Did you by chance buy the one that can be charged wirelessly?"

No, it has a charging chord. First I downloaded the 2 updates it had waiting - no difference. Then I reset it which wiped out *all* of the kindle books and docs on it. I had talked to customer service a month or so ago, and wasn't willing willing to take that step, but I finally caved. I doubt that fixed it but we shall see. I bought it last December, and have just started using it. It's too late to send back. It's the kindle I can use near a power outlet.

It just sometimes will not cut on even when it has 89% power.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your kindle HBW.
I have found that when ever you have problems with a items . Getting them sorted take a long time.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I just bought this book, it looks interesting and I liked the few pages of it that I read. I like books set in medieval times. It has 'alternative' in the title so liberties may be taken with the history. It's in the KU program and is 99 cents to buy (amazon us).

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments About the newer kindle fire again, today I managed to get it to work when hooked up to my car radio so that I could listen to an audiobook. Last week I did the exact same thing and it would not work. Whatever, I'll take it.

This is my fault for not using it for audiobooks until it was out of warranty.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Well, I can't remember if I had wrote about this earlier, but my mother-in-law was killed in a car wreck on June 16. She was 88, had a spine and a will of pure steel, and I only ever heard her say one cuss work (recent) and never heard her raise her voice. I am serious, she could have commanded armies.

I doubt she weighed over 90 pounds and was about 5 feet tall. No stoop at all in that spine, and kept busy and involved until her last day. She was on her way to buy clothes for her sister in the nursing home. She was always well dressed and coordinated (even in casual clothes), her hair was perfect, and in full makeup. I saw her without makeup once - the night her husband died.

I admired and loved her. There was a big crowd at her funeral. Many people told my husband stories about her and his father that he had never heard. She and my father-in-law were a precious couple.

He's been very busy, first seeing about the funeral, and still handling her affairs. He is going to her house soon and meeting one of his cousins, so they can start going through her things and making decisions. It hits him at times.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments It takes quite a while to get over loosing
your Mother. Especially if she was the main person who everyone went to, and the whole family met up at her house. My thought are with you and your husband at this sad time .

Took my husband a long time to realise his mother was gone. Being one of 8 children, and 26 grandchildren. She always had someone visiting. His younger brother took it bad as he lived with her. Family don’t see each other much anymore, She was the matriarch that kept them all together. It’s surprising how the loss of one’s mother can change things.

Carol | 2793 comments Today is a Load Your Kindle Day on Amazon. Books are free or discounted. I found two books. I'm not into witchy stuff or hot books, but I know some of us are. Didn't find any HR's.

I read the Keeper of Lost Things and gave it 4 stars. Ending wasn't quite right, but otherwise I liked it. It's free today.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Not had much time to read much this week.
My husband and I have been ripping out the kitchen. It is now empty waiting for the plaster to do the walls and ceiling. My house is upside down with items and bags pack with food and kitchen items. Surprising what you find while emptying cupboards. Hopefully it will all be finished in a few weeks. My old one was falling apart, been putting it off, as I hate the mess .
Electric’s, plumbing next, then kitchen fitted.
Hoping to get some reading done. I have started reading a series 6 books 📚 Wendy Vella I like the humour in her stories.

You have a big project with your kitchen. From time to time
I go through the over-the-counter meds in a large cabinet in
the kitchen. Husband will use outdated Ibuprofen or a

message 2338: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments I just discovered a new-to-me and fairly new HR author who writes just the way I like. There's humor, great characters with foibles and all, romantic moments, even fun moments with small children (and I'm not all that interested in children in my romances), and the writing is darned good. Erin Langston Forever Your Rogue

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I will have to lookout for this book and author OLT . Sounds good and the sort of stories that I like.

message 2340: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Thanks, OLT. I bought it based on your rec. We usually like the same HR authors (exception is Mary Balogh, but I have to say I'm not feeling her new series).

There are all these 5 star reviews for newer HR authors, but I suspect I would hate most of these books. So, I have been rereading old favorites because my son is home. He likes me to play video games with him as I am really bad; he enjoys laughing at my frustration. I don't mind dropping rereads to play video games.

We redid our kitchen years ago, and we lived with a card table in the living room set up with a coffee maker and an electric tea kettle. We also borrowed a dorm fridge from a neighbor. But, once it's done, you will love it, I'm sure.

LOL. I feel the same, HBW :) I mean, who told Meredith Duran it was okay to not publish a book these last few years - how dare she deprive me like that! grrr

message 2346: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments And Cecilia Grant? She writes four titles and then just deserts us.

message 2347: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments At least Duran gave us Lockwood's story before quitting on us. Do you think that, discounting serious personal issues, these quality authors stop writing because they see their books not selling as well as the drivel put out by less talented writers and think why bother?

message 2348: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments There's a bargain-priced book on Amazon at the moment that has been made into an Apple TV+ series with Tom Hiddleston. Victorian times setting. The Essex Serpent

message 2349: by Cath (new)

Cath | 953 comments Oh yes, I am so mad at Cecilia Grant, as well!

I do wonder why they stop. Is it burn out? Or if their books don't sell as well maybe they get pressured by publishers to change up their style and content in a direction they don't like?

message 2350: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments Mostly what the publishers want is a lot of sexy times in the HRs and both those authors did supply that. Who knows? Maybe they refused to dumb down their writing and content. Jayne Fresina now self publishes everything she writes, I believe, and has eliminated sex scenes almost entirely from her recent stories. She is another favorite of mine and I hope she continues to write. It's probably discouraging because few readers recognize the quality of her books and so she is not a best-selling romance author.
