HR-ML, thank you! Not suitable for kids but if you know a biologist they would probably love it. information can be boring or interesting and this author made it interesting and funny while getting the point across.

Carol, that is amazing about Morgan Freeman.

When I retire (hopefully at the end of the year), I will re-read favorite series and catch up on some of them that have fallen by the wayside.

Danker | 1030 comments Last few days of my supposed break and it has been interrupted by two 3 hour trips already. Ha! Anyway, instead of meeting a deadline for a report (voluntary) I’m writing today I read Mary Kingswood’s latest. Hero is 50, with thinning hair and paunch. He is indolent but funny. Heroine is 46 with a tongue sharp enough the cut glass, but a kind and generous heart. Neither of them have any money. I enjoyed it immensely. Now back to my report. I will be up all night to get it in on time.

Life would be so much more fun without reports and deadlines.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I read A Michaelmas Truce and enjoyed it too.

Danker | 1030 comments Phew Roberta… glad to hear your positive reaction. It’s a while since I’ve enjoyed a new title and I wondered if my judgement might’ve been off.
Over my “break” I HAVE ploughed through every Sophia Nash book in my archives. Wonder what happened to Nash? I liked her touch. Back to what I should be doing.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I have just finished reading , The Saxon Lords unwanted bride by Emily Royal. I needed a box of tissue reading this story. I have started to read the second book to this series. The Saxon Warrior’s Captive Bride. (Medieval Brides )

Carol | 2793 comments If you have a bit of time, download Once Upon a Townsbridge Story. It's a novella that's free right now. The story is okay, but the first scene is just hysterical. I really did laugh out loud.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Thanks Carole.
I already have this book, but haven’t got round to reading it yet . Sounds like it could be fun. I do like humour in books.

Hi All--

Saw dietician today. Hurray I don't have to give up salmon
(which has anti=inflammatory properties) or beans.
She gave me a bunch of written material. I can't eat pig
products ( I seldom do) but I'm a hog for knowledge!

message 2111: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments HR-ML, I just read that coffee counteracts uric acid in some way and helps prevent gout. Did anyone say anything about that to you?

message 2112: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Is it a low purine diet? That is what my husband called it.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Yes, OLT, coffee and tea are good.

It's the caffeine, like in Excedrin. Need my coffee in the morning so I can move my joints. And like you Happy, I drink it throughout the day.

HR-ML, here's an article that might interest you about gout and coffee. It sounds as if, if you are not a coffee drinker at the moment, it may not be a good thing to abruptly take up drinking a lot to prevent gout.

message 2118: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Maybe HR-ML can start off slowly, like a cup in the morning and after awhile add a cup with lunch.

Thanks as always for all input provided. I fear if I had more than one coffee cup, I'd need to urinate often. My goal is to feel better and get a parttime job.

I had a 2nd job interview for a parttime, a couple mos ago, they
told me they had a concern for my walking- could I handle the job?
That job is still listed on Indeed.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I am not a coffee drinker. I prefer tea, don’t get up till my husband brings me a cuppa tea. Though most mornings it’s around 7am

Tea also has lots of antioxidants and caffeine, but you don't have gout??? ;-0

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I used to buy caffeine free tea and coffee. I think Coca Cola supposed to full of caffeine and sugar. I haven’t drank that for year’s now.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I drink (mostly) black, unsweetened coffee all day long, from my early teens. I also started drinking Coke Zero last year which also contains caffeine. I have trouble staying awake during the day. I'm a night owl.

Shaz, My post was supposed to be funny, not hurtful. It's very ared to make silly comments in a post.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Carole I don’t understand why you thought it was hurtful. I must admit I didn’t see the joke. I just thought we were having a good discussion.

Being from the north of England. We are known for joking with each other. Southerner’s don’t normally understand are humour.
I normally put 😂😉icons or lol. Because I don’t know if people understand my humour.
Take care Carole hope you have a nice day.
I am off out tonight with my husband children and grandchildren. We are celebrating our 47th wedding anniversary. Wow life just passes you by.

Shaz---

Congrats on your anniversary!

Humor. People who don't know me, may think my humor is too dry?
When I ran a mental health group, I joked, but also was v serious
and often cried when the clients cried. One client assigned to another
group, said to me during a break, "Ms Cheryl you're as crazy as
we are" & I replied "you're just now realizing this?" I miss all
the people there.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments My husband is reading/studying this week, and he pointed out a study that drinking 2 cups of tea a day lowers overall mortality. So, drink your tea, Shaz. I love tea as well. And, for those of you who can't do the caffeine in tea (although, I find tea easier to tolerate than coffee), the healthful effects of tea include decaf as well. Off to drink a cuppa, as Shaz would say.

Carol | 2793 comments I haven't been able to drink tea since I had my tonsils out at age four. I occasionally drink Camomile tea, but don't think that's real tea. I do love green tea ice cream. Go figure.

Congrats on you anniversary, Shaz.

Yes everyone, including you, on this thread is supportive.

Now is time for my herb tea, w/ a touch of honey, which helps w/ inflammation. I'm getting the hang of the dietician's pearls of wisdom. 2TBS of nuts is almost invisible- LOL!

message 2135: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Here's another study gem. Apparently, eating most of your calories earlier in the day is better for weight loss. I think I have read/been hearing similar for years, but I do love popcorn at night while reading or watching a movie. As you can see, my husband is sharing anything he thinks might be of interest to me. He cited 2 separate studies, one where people stopped eating around 3 pm, and the other had people eating by 5 pm. Now, we have proof that those early bird dinners are better for you. lol

I read a similar article, so I now have a pretty decent breakfast. I have my dinner around 5:30. I love popcorn and it's a healthy snack.

ETA: Without butter

OLT | 2480 comments Shaz, I forgot to add my best wishes also on your wedding anniversary. 47 years is nothing to sneeze at. My congratulations! My husband and I are going for 54 years this coming January. Not sure if ours is a grand love or a comfortable settling.

Roberta2---

The Master's level RD discouraged my small meals several times a day. Said if I had pc of fruit to have 2 TBS of nuts too. I'd had 2 meals daily, plus healthy snacks. Said 3 meals daily are best, b/c insulin rises every time we eat. We don't want insulin increases 6-7 x a day. She wrote a gout cookbook which I plan to check out. She added no eating 3 hours before bedtime. Told her I have a love affair w/ real Dr. Pepper and are now down to 12 oz per week. Diet Dr. P tastes like an old, dirty sock to me.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Thank you ladies for the congratulations. Had really nice time with the family.

My husband is always reading health issues in the papers and reads them to me. So many contradictions. One minute something good for you then it’s not. I think that we are all different and things can work for one person and not for another.
I took the turmeric, it seems to have took the swelling down on my hand, but made me constipated 🤷‍♀️😂. So I might only take them a few days a week. Take care ladies, I enjoyed our little chat’s

That's so funny about turmeric. I had the exact opposite reaction. I'm also going to try taking it less frequently.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm an emotional eater so you can imagine how much I have been overeating recently. I've bought ice cream twice this week.

Speaking of eating, our dog who was boarded for a month has not wanted to eat much. Right now she is really chowing down. It's good to see and hear. Crunching away.

Danker | 1030 comments For fans (like me) of the C J Sansom Shardlake series (that I recommended here a wee while ago) some good news. Only down side for me is that I will now need to subscribe to Disney.

message 2145: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Ooh, Sean Bean is in it. I have adored Sean Bean forever. May have to subscribe to Disney as well.

HBW, So glad to hear your dog is better. I am sure she was traumatized; if she's eating, she is feeling good again.

We dropped our Utube subscription after the kids left after the holidays. Now, my husband wants to subscribe to a sports streaming service so he can watch the Boston Red Sox season. I see many an evening where I am reading in the living room, and he is watching baseball in the family room. We could never have downsized. We need to be at opposite ends of the house many evenings.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Well, I have some good news. Supposedly Servpro is going to start working on our house next week. I have been wondering when it would get started.

I also found my son health insurance since he is aging out of my policy. I found him insurance that is as good as what I have with lower copays and the price is based on his income. Did Santa Claus visit?
