Roberta2 | 2383 comments I too am reading more books from the library. I still have to figure out how to download from the library website to my kindle. I couldn't before--could only download to my desktop, but I am going to try again.

Carol | 2793 comments What ebook library service are you using, Overdrive or Libby? Overdrive does not go on a Kindlr, but does go on a Kindle Fire. Libby goes on both, but depends on whether Amazon allows it to be loaned to a Kindle, but it can always be downloaded to a Fire. All of them go to my phones, including audiobooks. Hoopladigital.com has lots of ebooks and audiobook that I want to read, if you have hoopla.

HI Carol,
Kindle Fire. Does this require the use of Alexa. Or is Alexa: Plan B
to operate it when KF is being 'docked?' I don't trust Alexa.
Can earbuds be used on KF?

Hi All---
Just sent Happy Book Worm a GR message to let her know we are thinking
of her. We realize she's super-busy but added hang in there!

You don't use Alexa with it, at least I haven't been able to. Download either Overdive for KF or Libby for KF from the Amazon app store. Then open the app and follow the directions to hook it up to your library with your card number and password. Does your library have hoopla?

Carol---

I have paperwork from the library R/T e-books - I need to find it.
Have been putting off deciding KPW vs KF.

If you scroll down from KF description on Amazon, they show Alexa can be used while 'docking' the KF: HD8.

UPDATE- signed up for Hoopla via my library system a couple
mos. ago, have not used it yet.

If you mean asking Alexa to do something or get mail, messages, and reminders you can. Alexa will read at command from Audible. It will not read from library audio books.

I misstated that it will not read audio books from the library. It will read them, but not on oral command. You have to press buttons and arrows.

message 2009: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Carol, I went on to my public library's site yesterday; I can only use their Overdrive site to borrow for my Kindle paperwhite. I signed up. The books I wanted to read are on hold. They will email me when I can borrow the ebooks. So, I am not 100% sure this is going to work until I can try to borrow the books.

message 2010: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Libby by Overdrive can also be used on Fire tablets, Android phones or tablets, or Chromebook. Not all Libby for Overdrive are available for the Paperwhite. I don't have an Apple phone, so I don't know about downloading to it. I got a cheap Fire just for reading some ebooks and audiobooks.

When your Kindle ebook is ready, it will show you a button to download it as a Kindle book, which you will press. It will then show up in Content and Devices on Amazon or you can just do a search on your Paperwhite and get it.

Did you check to see if your library has hoopladigital.com. You can just go to their site and put in the name of your library and info they require to check it out. There is never a wait for their books.

message 2011: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Go here to use other tech to download library books: https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby

Overdrive is in the process of dropping the Overdrive name and using Libby.

Don't forget about hoopladigital.com. You get audio books, ebooks, movies, music. Great app if your library uses it.

Yes, it can be so frustrating. I've gone through this, so I kinda know how to do it. There's more when you get yourself set up. Pretty soon you'll be able to just relax and read an ebook or listen, if you want to.

The only think with hoopla is that you can't use it on your Paperwhite, but you can use it on a KF, or any phone. And there is no wait and you get to keep the book for 3 weeks.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Hello, I've missed you! We are still staying with our very patient and caring sister and brother in law. We are in the process of getting a rental until the house is put back together again. The insurance company estimates 10 months but they are moving glacially. I am doing very little reading - just a little before i go to bed, and I miss it. I only have a 30 minute commute to and from work but it is tiring. I was only a very few miles from where I worked before the house burned. To sum it up, we are okay, just not in housing yet. :( I am not feeling optimistic about the house we will (possibly) be renting.

Yeah, I bought one figuring with the sale and turning in my old KF, it's not all that costly. But I can't download hoopla to it and I use it hoopla a lot. I should have read the reviews first because a lot of people are mad about the same thing and have been waiting a long time. Me thinks, Amazon is never going to allow hoopla on the KF.

Carol | 2793 comments Well, after hours of work, I finally somehow got Google Play on my new KF and then was able to download the Hoopla App. Very frustrating, but now I can keep it.

ETA: I checked on the latest Kindle 7 and it appears to have the same problem with hoopla but can it be fixed. I guess Amazon doesn't want anyone reading anything other than their approved lends.

What I find so funny is all ebooks are borrowed. They are owned by the publishers, not us.

Hi All---

After testing, had high uric acid& I rec'd a gout dx. MD informed me gout effects all extremities & body parts. In the last 15mos I've lost 35-40 lbs, but need to lose more. I must avoid or greatly limit salmon, turkey & beans- all favs. We have plenty of veggies and fruit. On 2 meds now- the steroid- thank God is temp- has a metallic taste. So far pain is about the same- hope the meds kick in. I asked for/ received a referral for a dietician.

My chiro injured his shoulder & sub is not as good. He might retire? The shoe
inserts were sent back for a re-fit. I'm tired of docs.

So sorry you have all of this going on. I agree with you about being tired of seeing doctors. I've taken Prednisone when my RA acts up. It usually takes about 3-4 days to kick in for me. Hope they work as fast for you.

You're probably too for both of those. Ask your doctor if he thinks it's okay to take a low dose of Melatonin. It helps when your head is spinning and with getting a decent amount of zzz.

OLT | 2480 comments HR-ML, sorry to hear about your gout problem. Hope it clears up with changes in your diet and the meds. You are in good company with gout. Didn't it used to be called the "disease of kings?"

And I hear you about doctors. I'm tired of it all too. My foot surgeon no longer takes Humana, my health insurance, and gave me another doctor to check in with. Like heck I will. I'm done with this foot. The little toe no longer functions and there is still some pain when I walk, but, in the grand scheme of things, this is nothing.

Since about 15 yrs ago I've had 3-4 MDs who retired b/c they tired of tangling w/ insurance cos. We switched insurance & hubs went w/o his good urologist x 10 yrs,
had him again as MD, then he retired.

Sorry RE your foot. Just when you get comfortable w/ a doc, they change insurance on you. About gout, Ben Franklin had it & he ate fancy food @ home and abroad.

They are at my vet's office. She is boarding them free of charge but I am going to pay her anyway. She can donate the money to someone else, or keep it for when someone else is in need. She has boarded a dog and 6 cats for over a month.

HR-ML :hugs: you help just by being you. We will be moving into our rental house later this week and bringing our surviving babies home. We can replace possessions, but it was the loss of our pets that hurt. Every animal in the house except Layla - who wasn't in her crate - died. Smoke inhalation. The cats who lived were the ones who were outside that night - I didn't realize that at first. They were the only ones that did go outside.

I am so grateful to my vet - she has boarded our dog and 5 or 6 cats (not sure) and told me she wouldn't charge me. They have been there about a month. (I am paying her anyway fyi.)

Phil and I are talking about how to make sure we can get out of the house if this ever happens again.

All your fur babies knew you loved/ love them. Poor sweeties. I hope you make the rental house, homey. You are a good person.
