HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm reading a good historical mystery. It publishes in a few days.

https://www.amazon.com/Murder-Seven-D...

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I am reading The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss for Bodice Ripper Challenge. It’s Medieval, which I like to read.
I find the some of the new books these days too modern . Not believable for historical reads.
This one was written in the seventies. My teenage time’s. Glam Rock, Motown, Rod Stewart, Queen and David Cassidy .

Central heating got a leak. So hubby and I are today having to pull up the wooden flooring that we put down just before Christmas 😢 so probably be busy next few days. 🤞it’s in the place we believe it to be.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Sorry you have to deal with that Shaz.

We lost power this morning, but it was only for 6 hours. Didn't feel it at all because of our whole house generator. I really think that is one of the best home improvements we have ever done.

Shaz, I am so sorry about your leak and your flooring. :(

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Thank you ladies.
Looks like buying a generator has been a good investment Roberta.
Engineer for boiler has been out 3 times to boiler. The last time said if it happened again it’s a leak. Cannot find a leak on radiator or under the floors. So have asked them to send a different engineer to look at boiler again. Coming Thursday.
Sounds like the same problem my sister had , and it was the boiler at fault.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I finally read Fresina's A Deadly Shade of Night which I downloaded last year at some point. It took me a bit to get into it, but I did enjoy it. I forgot how dense her prose is. The wry humor is, as always with her, so much fun to read.

Now I want to re-read that series.

Carol | 2793 comments I bought it a while ago and still have it in my TBR pile. Waiting for my free KU to be up. Actually, I have a few Fresina books TBR.

Cath | 953 comments I'm looking forward to reading my first Fresina (The Snow Angel) next month for a BOTM read. I keep hearing good things about Fresina, and it'd be nice to find another HR author I enjoy.

message 1911: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments I think my two favs so far are Slowly Fell: A Tale of Love and Thumbscrews and The Peculiar Pink Toes of Lady Flora. I haven't read one that I haven't enjoyed though.

message 1912: by Cath (new)

Cath | 953 comments ^Just the titles alone make me want to read those 2!

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Still reading the Wolf and the Dove. Enjoying it. Two horrible people in this story. Who plot against the couple.

Heating engineer came today, found a leak in the boiler. Sent for a new part , back Monday to replace it. 😊
Shame the last one didn’t listen to what I told him. This one knew straight away what the problem was.

Progress is being made, so that is something. I keep a list of preferred people to do work on my house.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I have joined Kindle unlimited. Just a quick question. Do you have to be on line to read the books.

No, just to download the books and then you can read offline.

RE message #1910

Fresina is a good author, and her approach is refreshing & she has
non-cookie cutter plots. Most of her's I've read were 4 stars of 5.
The last book I read of her's confused me until I put together the pieces.

About a yr ago (?) I erased most of my Amazon reviews. Hubs and I share an email account. Hubs changed his mind about doing reviews. Some erased reviews were of Fresina's Deverell family series.

BJ (barbararhodes) | 123 comments I found a new to me author of historical romance and loved the first book in a series of 3. The first has a scheming heroine, but of course there is more to the story, links to Florence Nightingale. The series is available on KU.

Thanks, BJ. I bought it after reading the first few pages. When I'll have time to read it is another question.

I reallly enjoyed the Snow Angel. (view spoiler) At first, her prose style (the rhythm) was a bit awkward for me, but then it seemed to flow. Maybe it was my brain and not her style, lol.

I had a funny reaction to the direction it went, at the end. In a way I was kind of bummed. (view spoiler) but I think it was a better book for not going that way.

I really liked it; the h did act badly when she was 18. He decides to punish her years later. But she's changed, having nursed soldiers on the frontline in Crimean War. When he sees her skills with his wounded brother, he's horrified at how he treated her.
I read book 2 last night, it's Ok but I didn't like the story alternating between past and present. Seemed to make it heavier on Telling but I might be a little harsh.
I'll re-read later and see what I think. I'll start book 3 today.

Well I finished the final book in series, currently anyway. For me book 1 was 5 stars, 2 was 31/2 - 4, book 3 solid 3 star read, bit OTT.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Starting reading a Viking series. It started off well. Written by different authors. Each book has gone downhill for me. Ten books in all. If nothing else it will give me an intake into which authors to stay away from. Book 4 is probably one of the authors to give a miss too in future. She seems to like writing about sex and forgot she needs a decent story to go with it. Lots of skipping pages for me probably about 60% of the book.
Having a break from it for a while. Hopefully when I go back they might be a bit better story’s.

message 1928: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm really picky about which authors I will read. I still like romance but not the ones where most of it seems to be some wording and plot between sex scenes.

I only buy these more expensive Matthews books when they go on sale. I got the first one for $1.99 and am waiting for the third one in the series to be released so that this second is, maybe, offered at a bargain rate at the same time.

message 1931: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I have the first one and am also waiting for a price drop on the 2nd. I have to really love the series and/or want to support the author to pay that for an ebook.

OLT | 2480 comments Waving back at ya, HBW. And, to all, I found a couple of economically-priced HRs this week that aren't half bad. Well written and both at least a 3-star read verging on 4.

The Marriage Season This one is written in the style of Georgette Heyer, but the characters have a bit more 21st-century sensibilities, especially in their attitude towards sexual orientation. Still, I found myself enjoying it, although the young son of one of the female protagonists wasn't, IMO, very well done.

The Worst Woman in London This one has a relatively realistic look at divorce in the Victorian era. This is only Bennet's third novel, I think. I read the first two and they, in particular the first, were a bit dark, dealing with the inhumanity of mental institutions in the 1800s. This new one was a bit lighter, in spite of the unhappy marriage theme.

message 1934: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Thanks, OLT. I downloaded both titles. I read the first 2 of Bennet's years ago and remember liking them. And $1.99 each.

Carol | 2793 comments The Naturalist If anyone hasn't read this series and is interest, the first book is on sale for .99.

I've got that one. I haven't read it yet but I loved the opening paragraphs.

message 1939: by OLT (last edited Feb 09, 2023 06:24AM) (new)

OLT | 2480 comments I have one more book to mention that I got recently for a bargain price because the next book by the same author is going to be released soon. It's quite anachronistic and the characters a wee bit too young but it's smartly written. Full of diverse characters, minorities and alcohol and drug abusers, it's described as a Bridgerton/Gossip Girl/Mean Girls kind of story. The heroine is a young girl who is sent to live with her aunt and uncle and wants to fit in and have friends and gets caught up in the wrong crowd for a while. Reputation

message 1940: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments BTW, to anyone who still reads Alicia Cameron I will mention she has a new one out about the last unmarried Fortune daughter.

Marguerite and the Duke in Disguise

message 1941: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I read that yesterday and wasn't that impressed. It was all over the place, IMO. Also, what is going on with editing? In several places, the wrong twin's name is used, and there were multiple errors. Is this to get the book out fast?

message 1942: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I also read The Marriage Season. I agree on a 3 star rating. It fit the bill for me. I didn't want to read anything angsty. I am going to read The Worst Woman in London next.

message 1943: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments It is a shame, because I think if Alicia Cameron would slow down her output, she could write better books.

Cameron has lost her muse. I remember her first two or three books as being clever and cute. Now they bore and annoy more than anything.

About Duran. I have everything she wrote and am sad that she is no longer writing.

I'm late to this Regency stuff. The funny thing is I just picked the pocketbook up from my library yesterday. I got the Kindle addition because it's much easier to read.

message 1948: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Carol, At Your Pleasure isn't set during the Regency period. Just to let you know.

message 1949: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Read The Worst Woman in London, I would give it a solid 4 stars.

message 1950: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments So, I wanted to read another divorcee title and made the mistake of buying.Mr. Dale and The Divorcée. I don't recommend this title. Really annoying. Divorce was almost unheard of in the Regency era. That was part of the problem, and the entire plot set up and execution just irritated the heck out of me.
