Danker, so good to hear from you. Wow, that is some Christmas gathering! It sounds like fun (and tiring).

Hmmm, about the Irish Christmas holiday for the women, I suspect they earned more than one a year.

I have not heard anyone ever mention anything about the Irish woman getting a day off. Would be good if it was true.

Happy reading whatever you choose to read!

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Happy New Year to you all, and please be safe tonight.

I have good news - one of my cats - Thomas Andrew - who has been missing since the freeze showed up tonight, none the worse, still fat and healthy.

I am very worried about Zebbie, who I haven't seen since the freeze.

BJ (barbararhodes) | 123 comments Happy New Year everyone! I received KU as a gift for Christmas, and am reading a book a day - British police murder mystery. Just loving it even though the books follow a formula, the mid forties h is just so clever - I can't work out who the baddie is.

After selling up and moving to a new state, just signed a contract on a new place. Think I paid too much but it's been beautifully renovated, walking distance to shopping centre and bus with warranty papers in the dishwasher! It's so new and pretty.

Next step is furniture, as I brought nothing with me except some clothes and books - the important things for me.

BJ, congratulations for moving ahead with your plans Your new place sounds wonderful!

I am still working my way through a re-read of the third book in a series by Ilona Andrews, one of my favorite authors. For some reason this one is a hard slog. Not sure if it is urban fantasy since most of it is not in cities.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Happy New Year to everyone. I haven't done much reading in the last 2 weeks. We have been playing games (including video games-jeopardy is one), putting together puzzles, and watching movies. And walking the dogs because the weather has been warm. Finally, all the cookies and junk food are gone from the cupboards. Hopefully, I can get back to eating healthier. My list of things to accomplish in the new year include cleaning out closets. Let's hope I at least keep that resolution.

Cath | 953 comments Happy New Year to all!

HBW, I really hope your kitty Zebbie turns up.

And BJ, I loved reading about what you're doing. Made me feel happy. (vicarious happiness?) Maybe b/c someday I hope to move toward ditching lots of stuff and so it's inspiring to hear about your adventures. And also it makes me happy when people pursue their dreams/goals whatever they may be - again b/c it's so inspiring!

OLT | 2481 comments Happy New Year to everyone from me also. And, Roberta2, I also made the resolution to clean out closets. Maybe we can help each other to stay with it. Mine are a disgrace. I go through them periodically but never get rid of enough to make a dent.

Carol | 2793 comments The Kindle Fire is basically for reading and listening to audiobooks. Goodreads was bought by Amazon and IMO has gone downhill since.

My friend just got Libby by Overdrive from her library. You need a library card and a password, which you get from your library.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I basically bought it to read books. I normally buy books. I am finding it harder to find books from where I normally buy them. I worked out it probably be cheaper to subscribe to kindle . As I keep coming home with books I have already read. I have lots of series with a few books to find, to complete them, and eBay are asking to much money for the books I need or am interested in reading .
One of my granddaughter is very good with technology. So I will have to see if she can understand the app.

Carol | 2793 comments If you already have a library card from a library that has Overdrive, you need to get a password from the library first before you do anything. Just call them and they'll give you a password. I might be able to walk you through the rest of it.

I have books all over the place. Ebooks take up much less room. ;-) And don't need dusting.

My kindle is my most precious thing I own. My first kindle was a gift in 2010 from my son. Only read 1 book in 2011, now I read between 500 - 1000 books a year on my kindle.

I set a budget and track it using an excel spreadsheet. I also use it to track titles, series, author, my rating and review. I post them on goodreads, but the spreadsheet tracking my spending is critical. It has helped me plan my future reading now that I am about to retire.

This year I received KU as a gift and to date, I have not purchased a book in 2023. Highly recommend kindle and KU for anyone like me who budgets.

I have used libby but the delay accessing books doesn't suit my imperative nature, I'm afraid.

message 1823: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments I get KU on and off, usually when there's a sale or a couple of books on it that I really want to read. I do find waiting for a library book a little annoying, but I just put a hold on the book I want and when I get it, I get it. I don't know if your library has hoopla digital. It never has a wait for books but doesn't always have the latest.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments I have a library password. Never used it, it’s not got that many books and I have read most of them.

I can use hoopla digital on my kindle fire, but knowing I have to read a book within a certain time changes my enjoyment of reading it. I don't know why, since I also read arcs within a certain time and that doesn't bother me. It may be because the book will disappear from my fire before I have finished it.

I have never had a problem renewing a book on hoopla or borrowing a book later if the 3 weeks has expired. Libby on the other hand can be a pain with their wait and 2-week loan time.

My family's understanding was 12 days of Christmas began on 25th December (tree was put up/decorated evening of 24th Dec and we had a midnight 'feast'. The 12 days of Christmas ends on Jan 5th - and the tree was taken down, as Jan 6th is the Epiphany - the day Jesus was baptised.

message 1834: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments I get rid of my Christmas decorations on January 1 or 2. Theoretically you are supposed to leave them up until Jan 6, which is the 12th and last day of Christmas.

message 1835: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments I stand corrected by BJ about the 12th day of Christmas. But from what I hear, Jan 6 , besides being Epiphany, is the official take down the tree day.

No right or wrong, think it's just family traditions - and in my new home I just bought, there is no intention of ever having a tree. I'll enjoy other peoples' trees instead.

The tradition in Denver is to leave the outside lights going until the National Western Stock Show ends. This year it falls on Jan 22. Indoor decorations are whatever people like to do.

message 1841: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments MrsPearl, I like that tradition. All those lights would cheer me up. We don't have a particular day to take down the outside lights. It depends on the weather. We had nice weather on Sunday, and so the lights came down. We did take down the tree on January 6th.

I got rid of most of mine when my reading lapsed and then started reading again. Luckily, I discovered Amazon pretty early, so most of mine are ebooks.
I did discover after my husband died that he belonged to a book club and had a pile of books hidden in a large unused closet. He also had a copy of tons of physic books that publishers were touting for his classes.
Now I have tons of books on Amazon, which are really just borrowed. The publisher's right thing. So, just give me a library book ebook or audio book that I can read and return when I'm done. It doesn't cost anything, and I don't feel taken advantage of. Cheap KU's are okay, too.

Yeah, well, a little. A very little. The bag of clothes has been sitting on the floor for nearly a year, so I will deserve the kudos when they make it to the Salvation Army store. Although I am about to get another bag. I filled up the first one and have spotted several more things that can go to someone else.

My intended quilt scraps bother me. Those are old clothes that I meant to use to make quilts, and now I am pretty sure I will never make a quilt. It kills me to toss usable fabric. My Mama was thrifty, and I grew up sleeping under home made quilts. I treasure the ones she gave me.

OLT, imagine if the power grid fails for good, and there you are. With no dead tree books, and tablets and cell phones that are now worthless. All your electronic books just gone.

Yes, I have thought about this far too much. All those disaster movies where the cars stopped running, power disappeared, the food spoiled, etc.
