The Other Bennet Sister
Slow going to start. A P& P variation. The sisters mostly ignore Mary.
But Lydia 'throws shade.' Not what I recall from orig book (but it's been awhile.)

Not too early for me. I read one by Catherine Walsh perhaps a month ago.

Hope it was good because I picked it up when it was .99.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Which title is this? Did you like it?

message 1558: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments I liked it . I don’t remember the name but think it has Holiday in the title . She has only written 3 books so far so it easy to find with just her author name.

message 1559: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments Today, Nov. 10, there are two books that I decided to download at bargain price:

Portrait of a Scotsman

Someone to Cherish

$1.99 and $2.99 respectively. Those are two authors (Dunsmore and Balogh) whose books are normally too pricey for the amount of enjoyment I get from them.

message 1560: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments BTW, Holiday Romance is the Christmas romance I mentioned in message 1555.

message 1561: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Thanks, OLT. I downloaded Portrait of a Scotsman. Already had the Balogh.

message 1562: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Started reading Portrait of a Scotsman last night. The heroine is really irritating me, although admittedly, the H doesn't explain himself to her.

message 1563: by Cath (new)

Cath | 953 comments ^There were things I liked about that book, but the way the heroine was written wasn't one of them!

message 1564: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments I haven’t started it yet. I bought it with few expectations since I didn’t much like #2 in the series but I figured at two bucks it would be a cheap escape.

I read it and gave it 4 stars, so I must have enjoyed it, but hardly remember it. What I do remember is it wasn't that unusual. Just another beauty and the beast theme novel.

I bought them when they were on sale too. I rarely pay full price - mostly either for authors I want to support or when I just can't wait for the price drop. There are very few of those.

Carol | 2793 comments I'm listening to The Paris Secret, which was on Joans list with a 4 or 5 star rating. I got it from my library but it''s also a KU book. Loving it.

Carol | 2793 comments I finished listening to The Paris Secret. It was a great read. Had two little romances in two time periods, a mystery, and WWII history. Strong on the contributions of women to the war. It's not a HEA book, but I loved it as did Joan. Strong rec.

I also listen to My Evil Mother this morning. Very cute. It's available on Prime or KU. Fun diversion for an hour.

The Other Bennet Sister
I continued on and liked this. Had a complex story.

message 1571: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments I have a beautifully written book to recommend. It is historical and is partly a love story, but not just between a man and a woman, but also a love of words. It's about the beginning of the OED and I found it to be a lovely book. It's on sale again for $2.99. The romance is bittersweet but the book is worth the read, IMO.

Carol | 2793 comments I have two books that I highly recommend. I think I already recommended Lessons in Chemistry, which I believe I already recommended, but it's worth repeating. And The Matchmaker's Gift, which HBW previewed and also loved.

Maybe I'll make it three by recommending The Other Bennet Sister for those who liked P&P. Whatever became of Mary, the youngest, bookish Mary?

Hi All---

On my profile pg, under 'friends in this group' the 1st photo was/is of Joan. I did not place them in any particular order. I miss her & still don't know what to say. What a vibrant woman! But I feel her spirit remains w/ us.

We have so many lovely people here. I try to check in a couple times a day. We've learned from each other, laughed, cried, and nearly pulled out our hair over crazy politicos. But we're like cats: we always land on our feet. But OLT must do this gingerly until her foot feels back to normal.

Happy Thanksgiving early! Thanks for the memories. Please stay safe!

message 1579: by Danker (new)

Danker | 1030 comments Thanks for the rec about The Dictionary of Lost Words. It sounds great, except for the warning about a lack of a HEA. I have enough sadness at the moment and am not sure I could cope with it. I did read Simon Winchester’s The Surgeon of Crowthorne close to 20 years ago and that story, which I thought was well written, haunted me for months. I do so wish the new Georgina Clarke was another Lizzie H story and have no wish to move to a new era and new character, but I suppose I will buy her new offering. I’m finding comfort in re-reading my favourite Christmas HRs and in so doing I encountered an old anthology that wasn’t about Xmas (Regency Summer) which included a short story by Charlotte Louise Dolan. What a clever writer she was.

message 1580: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2481 comments Danker, I mentioned that the romance in The Dictionary of Lost Words is bittersweet but the ending of the book itself worked well for me. It isn't primarily a romance anyway, perhaps more a love song to words.

I'm with you about preferring another Lizzie H story by Clarke, but I will probably check out this new era as long as the price is right.

I doubt that any new holiday HRs will strike my fancy so I'll be getting out the oldies also.

message 1581: by Danker (new)

Danker | 1030 comments HR-M . Two things. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving but I wish you all a wonderful day with family, friends, or maybe even a solitary one. The second is your mention of Joan. Thanks for doing so. I will provide a link below to an interview with actor Richard Grant, whose beloved wife died a year or so ago. It’s from a programme I remember that I love, whenever I listen to it, from time to time. In his interview he says that there is one response to his wife’s death which he finds unforgivable - and that’s when people don’t mention her name. So I thank you for keeping Joan’s memory, and our pleasure in knowing her, alive. Thanks Joan.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Thank you, HR-ML, for posting how Joan is the first picture in the friend's list for this group. This is the time of year, I think, when we really miss those who have gone before us. They leave this hole.

Just imagine, though. She happened upon this little group and enjoyed what she read and joined us. We could have so easily missed her, and we didn't. That was a gift.

I've seen several Richard Grant movies. I can't imagine losing
a spouse. I read some of Joan's postings on another GR group she
frequented & was glad I did.

Yes we miss Joan. And I need to GR message Vivienne again.

I read one of her books, and likely won't read more. The book I read was okay, but I could have put it down and not been curious about the ending. Not the fault of the book - just not my cup of tea.

I read the first two of her Matchmaker series and enjoyed both of them. They both a Victorian mystery romance. I gave them both 4 stars. The Matchmaker's Lonely Heart is on sale for .99.

Geez, I am stuffed!!! My grandson did most of the cooking and he's really getting good at it. My granddaughter hasn't figured out how to turn on a stove yet.

ETA: Think back on those novels, they were probably a 3 1/2 rounded up to 4. Anyway, they were better than a lot of Regencies and Victorians I've read lately.

I like a combination of mystery and romance. I heroically restrained myself due to my already 4-digit collection of unread books on my kindle.

I'm getting confused about where to post. I already posted this on the political thread. I'm reposting here'

I use my library a lot and have tons of books on my Kindle to read, but I couldn't pass up .99. If I use it, I use it. If I don't I don't. I do get your point because I do feel overwhelmed by how many unread books I have. Good thing they're not DTB because I would have destroyed a whole forest.

A close friend of mine pushed me to listen to audiobooks and I'm so glad she did, especially when they are well done.

First, who is or what does crikey mean?

I'm very happy with my new Kindle Paperwhite. The pages a wonderfully clear. But as far as I know, you cannot transfer Apple books to any other device, so unless you want to start a separate collection on a different device, you need to stick with an Apple something. You can get library downloads on Apple products, so that doesn't matter. I'm not a big fan of Amazon. I sure love reading on my Paperwhite though.

I’ve never owned a discrete ebook reader. I do use Kindle on my iPad, as described, but I also use reading apps for ebooks that I buy from Apple and Kobo.
Crikey is an expression of surprise.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Well that made me laugh. Crikey a word used a lot in the UK.
My husband goes on you tube a lot. It seems we use a lot of different saying, to other countries. People from America post videos, translating our saying. Make us laugh, as some they get wrong.
When we went to Australia to see family. My nephews and nieces needed my sister to translate what we were saying.
Us northern people, speak different to the southern people and their saying are different to ours.
