Roberta2 | 2383 comments Susan, Thanks for posting the obituary for Joan. It is just what we knew of her--her love of skiing, tennis, books, cooking, and so much more.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments It was nice of you to post Joan’s obituary. The pictures was nice she looked happy.
So many people go missing, leaving us wondering if they are okay, or something happened to them.

Danker---

Thanks for sharing the poem.

message 1504: by Cath (new)

Cath | 953 comments I am so glad I got to read Joan's obituary. It was lovely.

And @Danker, thanks for sharing that poem. It really touched something in me. It's been years since I read poetry but I think I'd definitely benefit by reading more. I regret I am ignorant about Gerald Stern and his work but seems like I might enjoy more of his work. Adding it to my endless TBR list!

message 1505: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Danker, Thanks for the poem. I too need to read more poetry. Keep posting poems for us. I asked my husband about Gerald Stern, and he hadn't heard of him either. My husband has a masters in English Lit. in addition to his M.D. But, he reminded me that he read Keats, Yeats and some American poetry but not as much. His best man at our wedding was a Lit/poetry major. Can people still have poetry as a major in college? I have no idea. He sent us a book of his recent poem 3 years ago. I liked them--quite accessible and a very New England slant to them.

Interesting that your spouse literally has advanced degrees
in the arts & science!! He must generate fun convos.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Actually, Danker posted the poem. But, I would love to take credit for it. :)

HR-ML,

For years, I tried to get him to go on Jeopardy. lol We would sit there watching, and he knew the answers to most of the questions. The only category he had problems with were sports questions.

Carol | 2793 comments So interesting. My husband had a master's in chemistry and two doctorates in physics and occasionally wrote poetry. The only sport he was interested in was golf, which he played until he started having back problems.

With all of that brain power, I could never send him to the supermarket and expect a normal outcome.

He would've been good on Jeopardy. He could still do it.

Carol----
My spouse has deep interest in varied subjects. But last month he forgot our anniversary. He felt bad about it.

message 1511: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments He couldn't do Jeopardy now. He wouldn't press the buzzer fast enough. lol

message 1512: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Carol, I love that you couldn't send your husband to the grocery store and get a normal outcome. If my husband goes to the grocery store (which he often does), I need to write a novel about each item for him.

message 1513: by OLT (last edited Nov 05, 2022 12:42PM) (new)

OLT | 2481 comments I'm glad to know it's not just my DH who is grocery shopping deficient. I know what you mean about writing a novel about each item. For example, the last time I wrote down "dried blueberries" he came back with freeze-dried blueberries. Now I am much more specific and detailed, but it still requires his attention to those written details and there's no guarantee of that. Thank goodness I can walk and drive now, albeit still with that horrid CAM walking boot.

He must have search high and low for freeze dried blueberries. ;-))

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I forgot to tell you even if I write everything down that I think I need to, he still calls/texts me with questions. It would probably be easier for me to do all the shopping, but after years of being the only person going to the grocery store, I can say I really hate grocery stores.

In two weeks I'll have another X-ray and if things look good I will probably be allowed out of the boot. For some reason, the bones are being very slow to fuse together. I am now doing 30 minutes each day with a bone growth stimulator. Hope it helps.

I get that - I had to go to a grocery store today since the one I went to yesterday didn't have everything that we needed. This happens a lot recently.

OLT, fingers crossed for getting out of the boot soon.

Freeze dried blueberries/ other fruit are available at Kroger's.

OLT---
Hope you can give the boot "the boot."

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments Since retiring my husband comes shopping with me. Though he doesn’t mind food shopping. He doesn’t like other types of shopping. He has no patience for it. He sometimes stands outside the shops while I go in. Unless he wants something. He was quite happy to go into different shops while looking for a air fryer the other day, as he wanted to buy one. But left me in the shop while I was looking for cushion covers and throws. ( I will wait outside he said)🙄😂

Shaz----

When my spouse was a bachelor he spent 15 mins tops in grocery.
I get most of the groceries. He sometimes asks me to find obscure
or oddball items. We used to order Kroger on-line and then pick
it up together. I had more strength, even going back 5 years ago.
I saw an occupational therapist who suggested I leave non-
perishables in the car to lighten the load. Spouse helps me carry
bags in the house. Then we claim liquid detergent, cat litter,
box of garbage bags, etc as needed from my car.

Hi All----

KINDLE question:

I seem to recall one of the regular posters on our thread
bought a child's Kindle on sale. IIRC it was smaller than a
regular one & had no light? had no ability to make the
font size bigger? I may be wrong?

I hope to get a new Kindle inside of the next few weeks.

Thanks in advance.

I got it when it was on sale. It is the same as the adult Paperwhite and has all the same functions. It came with the case, which is very nice. Opens directly to the book you are reading without advertising. It is much clearer than my old Paperwhite.

Thanks for the details. You have tech expertise that I don't.

I found out about 1-2 weeks ago that effective Aug 2022, people could no longer get new Kindle books (even free ones) on his/ her older generation Kindle. I was unable to open a new book, even on "the cloud." I contacted Amazon customer svc via email. No
response. now I must call them.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I have a kindle Fire and so far, no problems. I'd like to get a backup but I know we have one sitting around the house. I had bought it hoping to get my son to read more. No luck with that.

FYI I have a Fire and read with the black background and white lettering. It is better for my vision.

Yes, call Amazon. You should be able to download the Kindle App to your smart phone or computer and read a book from either. If your Kindle is very old, maybe wait for a sale on new Paperwhites and get one. You will be amazed at the clarity and readability of it. I got the kids addition because it was on sale and basically the same with a few extras.

I have a Fire and use it for library books that aren't available on the Paperwhite or audiobooks. It's certainly readable but not as good. I'm starting to enjoy listened to books now that I'm older. I can listen to them on my smart phone with the proper app from my library or some KU's are available. Have you looked into what your library has to offer?

message 1531: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I can't download library books onto my Kindle paperwhite.

message 1532: by Carol (last edited Nov 07, 2022 04:54AM) (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Go to your library's website and see if they offer Overdrive or Libby for ebooks. If they do, you can. If they offer Cloudlibrary, you need a Fire or other gadget, like a Samsung tablet or smart phone. The Fire is the cheapest but not as versatile.

What library do you use? Maybe I can help.

After I downloaded Overdrive, I need to get a pass number from my library besides my library card number.

message 1533: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Carol, Thank you. I can download on my computer and read books, but can't on my kindle. They have Overdrive, Cloud Library and Hoopla. I have a desktop computer; it's not as comfortable reading as using my kindle.

message 1534: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments My husband has an old Ipad that I can use, but I can't seem to increase the font size on it to read easily when I download books.

OLT | 2481 comments I have the Kindle app on phone, computer, and small Android tablet, and have two Kindles, an old Paperwhite that only works with Wi-Fi to download because it’s so old it’s 3G and a newish Kindle reader. Of all these, I prefer to read on my phone. Easy to hold, clear and clean font and very responsive for page turning, etc.

I had trouble in the beginning. I have learned if you download to through Overdrive, you have to go to Libbyapp.com to download it to your Paperwhite. Crazy, but it seems to work.

Or if your library offers ebooks and you want to read it on a Kindle, you may need a newish version. Some of the older ones don't work with the library apps. I had a 2018 release and it worked fine, but I opted to get the newer one because of clarity of the print and I am NOT disappointed.

OLT, the newest Paperwhite is very clear and a pleasure to read on.

message 1537: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Geez, I sound like I'm working for Amazon. But truly I try to read for free or cheaply. I resent that if I buy a book from Amazon or other bookseller, I'm only buying the right to read it. There are a few I can loan out, but most can't be. i am now a great believer in our libraries like never before.

Very weird ingredients. Didn't get too far. It must have had 50 recipes for frittatas. I find my frying pan perfect for this. Easier clean up, too. Not recommended.

One of my favs. Much easier than doing the whole Coq au Vin thing.

Cath | 953 comments I'm not much of a cook. Simple works best for me. I have an elderly parent who needs to eat low calorie (or at least not high calorie) so I'm interested in all the discussion here about the air fryer. If it seems like I could use it to make fairly simple things (ie not lots of ingredients etc) and it could do a good job with at least some things other than chicken, I'm thinking maybe this could definitely be a good addition to the kitchen.
