OLT | 2480 comments It works as a standalone. I only buy this author’s books when they are on sale so the time between the first and this second was a couple years with my bad memory but it didn’t matter.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Thanks, OLT. Hope you are feeling better. Are you getting rain/wind where you are from Ian?

message 1353: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments Some. We’ll be expecting more over the next day or so but we live east of the worst of the storm. We could get tornadoes spawned from the hurricane and some flooding but, in the grand scheme of things, we may have lucked out again. We shall see.

I gave it 4 stars, so I must have like it. I've given all her books 4 stars. ETA: I got it on hoopladigital.

Danker | 1030 comments Roberta - I reviewed A Touch of Deceit here on GR and was amazed when the author responded with kind comments. I mention this because I say in the review that the story can be read as a stand-alone. I also comment that I thought it to be best of the three in the series published at that time.
OLT - glad you have been lucky, yet again.

Glad you are missing the worst of the storm. We haven't even had any rain. It has gotten cooler here and we have a fire weather watch for several counties in central Alabama (including mine). I don't remember hearing about this alert before.

Carol | 2793 comments I was talking to a girlfriend about six weeks ago. She asked me if I had read Lessons in Chemistry. I told her I had started it but I couldn't get into it. Anyway, she said she listened to it and really liked it. I just finished listening to it and loved it. Big rec. It takes place mostly in the 60's when women knew their place and to wanting to be a scientist was just out of the question. You know, women just weren't good in math and science. Or shop. Or sports.

ETA: It is not a laugh out loud funny book.

So much better than the book I read before this. It had God this and God that on every other page. I don't mind a little religion in books, but that one was over too much for me. Ruined a pretty good plot.

Cath | 953 comments ^That looks cute. I'll have to add it to my TBR list. Our local library has it but I'm guessing it might be a while before I get my hands on it. We have a statewide library lending network and looks like there are at least 237 holds for one bunch of the libraries!

It's not really a cute book although some scenes are. It's serious and also pertinent to what's happening today with the war on women.

message 1360: by Cath (new)

Cath | 953 comments ^In that case, I'll definitely have to read it. And even better, then, that it seems to be a popular book.

message 1361: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments The war on women is perpetual. I hate to be ugly but looking across recorded history - men are our biggest dangers. Somehow or other it circles around to some group wanting to control our bodies, our freedom to make our own choices, what jobs we can have, our children, freedom, our right to education. I thought that fight was mostly over (except for being prey for the predators who are always out there) but no, here we are again.

Sorry, my outlook is bleak these days.

Some men are in love w/ control? I'm tired of CEOs being old white guys. And too many legislatures also. This is freaking 20-22!

#45 asked did Mitch McConnell have a death wish? More violent imagery?

message 1363: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments HappyBookWorm,

I agree with you. I have to remind myself of all the good men out there. Unfortunately, we women have always lived in a world where the men in power want to subjugate us. I was so angry and upset and depressed all spring and summer, but I am trying lately to remember that there is only so much I can control and do what little I can to change what I can. The first thing is to vote. I wish we had more power. Why are so many men afraid of women? And many seem to despise us.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments HR-ML and Roberta2, I appreciate this place we have where we can share stuff like this.

I will try to remember that there are some really good men out there but reading the news makes that difficult. I always remember that these men who want to take ownership of our bodies away from us were conceived and grew in a woman's body.
His mother bore him. Taught him language.

So where does this profound disrespect come from? But if one of them was my son, I'd want to slap the crap out of him and ask him who he thinks he is.

Okay, rant over. Except, dear God, it just keeps getting worse. I am also holding my breath about Putin using nuclear weapons.

Yeah, a lot of good that did after he made up his own rules and denied Obama's Supreme Court pick and gave Trump three. It's not what you say, it's what you do.

I did some reading this weekend but mostly I played wordle. Does anyone else here like that?

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments My husband and I play the New York Times Wordle every day. We have a competition with his sister to see who gets it first. She got it in two yesterday, very impressive. Good for keeping your brain working.

message 1371: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments My daughter and I were doing wordle every day but I have stopped. I am up--woke up at 2:30 am with a headache. It's better but can't get back to sleep.

OLT | 2480 comments I was introduced to Wordle by my DIL long after everyone else was doing it but now am hooked. I also found Wordle in Spanish that my husband and I both do.

message 1373: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments That's awesome that you can do wordle in more than one language.

I have substituted another word game. I am doing wordscapes which gives you 6 or 7 letters to form words. It's fun. On the weekends, there is a time element added as well.

I would like another kindle Fire (because the battery runs down before I am through reading sometimes) but I know I have one in the house somewhere that I bought for my son - hoping he might be more interested in reading. He'd rather watch podcasts.

message 1376: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I love Wordle and do a few before I go to bed at night. I have an app on my kindle fire and there is no limit to them. I think it is having to focus on doing that one thing that helps me to sleep better.

I start with ADIEU and STORY most of the time (the recommended ones). Do any of you have favorite words to start off with?

message 1377: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I finally finished Lenora Bell's new book and it just was not for me. The hero spent his sister's dowries and practically bankrupted his estates, never mind the staff and tenants who relied on him. Nope, nope, nope. I like the genre but I like my heroes to have some integrity, a sense of responsibility, etc.

No, but that sounds interesting. The only question I have from reading the description is - why did she marry that guy?

Circumstances and he was nice, sophisticated, and could offer her a new world. His control evolved over time. I'm definitely going to read more of her books.

Carol | 2793 comments Lady Ludmilla's Accidental Letter is 1.99 or KU. Delightful historical story. Another author I enjoy.

message 1382: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments I have pretty much given up on historical romance except for rereads of old favorites and the very occasional HR by authors I like who are still writing. I found, on the other hand, a rather cute contemporary Christmas romance that I enjoyed in spite of being a cranky old lady. I don’t know how to link it here because I’m on my phone but it’s by Catherine Walsh and is called Holiday Romance, I believe.
BTW, HappyBookWorm, your Wordle starters are good. I often use Louie and Grant as mine.

I will try those. My focus is poor these days and I find wordle to be more enjoyable than reading sometimes. :(

ETA I just checked on Holiday Romance and it is 99 cents right now on US Amazon. So I'll be reading it sooner than later. I could use some cheer right now. The state of the world is just depressing.

I do! I have an app on my kindle fire and I do several of them a day (particularly before bedtime). It relaxes me - makes a good transition between the day and bedtime. I got 40 in a row once before missing the word. Um - not at one sitting.

Aw. I hope the sad ending is that Dewey lived a long, good life where he was fed daily and supplied with fresh water, and touched many people before he died of old age. That's actually a happy ending.

Our oldest cat who died this year was 20 years old but that is unusual. FYI we have 17 cats - adopted 10 in one year.

We lost four total in the last year - Emily Elizabeth (20), Shadow (15-16), Momo (18), and Jack (<2). We have another two of our oldest who will leave us probably within the next year. They both have serious health issues but as long as they eat and drink and don't appear to be suffering, I don't rush to put them down. They are 17 and 18 years old.

Sorry, once you get a cat lady started, they just go on and on. We also have 3 dogs. All of our pets are family members.

I'm sure most of you have already read this series but uf you haven't, do.
