Mrs. Pearl, don't worry about the name. I answer to anything.

Having the surgery may look more attractive than continuing as I am eventually , but right now I do mostly okay. I'm just careful when I walk.

I also take care of 3 dogs and many cats, and I don't really have anyone else who would be willing to step in.

Thank you - I got it. I wasn't willing to pay that much either. Got the Mr. Wickham book too.

Carol | 2793 comments For those with KU, I just finished The Duke's Wayward Wallflower and thought it an enjoyable read with lots of swoon.

Oh, that sounds good! I don't have KU anymore but will add it to my price drops list.

message 1305: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments I bought KU when they had a 3 months for $10 sale and I've just about had my fill. I'll not renew KU when it's up and wait to get it again when there's a bunch of books I want to read or Amazon has another sale.

Carol | 2793 comments I found a new site that has freebies. Most are novellas of series. I picked up two after spending two hours trying to do it, but I think I've got it down now. One was the Donovan series by Martha Keyes 0.5.

And don't forget about the Cloud Library or Overdrive. Not sure which one your library uses. It has newer books selections.

message 1310: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Thank you. I think Hoopladigital also requires your library card so it may be similar to Overdrive.

Heh. I just checked my kindle and I have both Overdrive and Hoopladigital on it. Nice. I'll have to check them both.

I also borrowed the first book in an Amish series I like. The little brothers are a hoot - more interesting than the romance. I've read the third book.

Why don't you get a library card? The have books that download to the Kindle or Kindle Fire. You should have a pretty wide selection where you live.

Just a few possible caveats. At my library we are switching over completely to Libby from Overdrive in 2023. (Your library will have info on which system they have). Ha, check with your library on line before reading any more. Maybe they are using another system.
Right now Libby is not compatible with Fire or any other Amazon device without downloading aps etc. When I am required to do so for my Kindles, I'll just take it into my library and let them do i.

However there is another work around that can be used for now. I check out the books-either for my Kindle or audio on my I-phone using the Libby ap which is downloadable to Iphones. At the moment, once I check them out on my phone using Libby they are available on my Kindles. ( must go to Amazon to finish the checkout process)

Or I can use Overdrive if I'm on the Kindle or my desktop.
Have I confused you terribly? It's just that I don't know how wide-spread this change will be...if more and more libraries are switching over to Libby.
Just one more way Bezo's is taking over the world.

message 1313: by Carol (last edited Aug 29, 2022 10:52AM) (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Our library switched over to Libby last year. Libby (Overdrive) offers fewer books or my library gets fewer books because they are more expensive. If you go to Libbyapp.com and enter your library and code, you should find a button that says to download it to you Kindle. It will then show up in your Contents List and you can send it to your Kindle or Fire. There, have I confused you now. :-)

I don't remember exactly how I did it.

message 1314: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Carden | 55 comments Ok, THANKS!! I might wait until son can help me with it, becasue no doubt I would find a way to screw it up. I am lucky, we own property in another part of the state and [ay tax on it. So I got a card from that library system. Not a huge improvement, but some.

I go to our system's main branch for hardcover's and paperbacks. They have decimated the collection. They have literally eliminated rooms of books in order to build "study rooms" for patrons to reserve. I am so disgusted.

message 1315: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I liked libraries where they kept the old books on the shelves and the place was full of books. It is sad that they threw the old ones out. Some of them were old favorites of mine. I remember going to the library and those books were gone, and the shelves were half-bare.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Just stepping in to wave hello. I am reading contemporary romance. Too much sex in this one - please, folks, romance. Desire is fine, too much detail put in mechanics and accessories kills the romance. Not a fan of the house designs and decorating either.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm just stopping in to wave hello. I'm reading murder mysteries right now. Read one that was positively painful to read but the second one is good so far.

Painful: https://www.amazon.com/Rising-Tide-Ve...
It was the 10th book so maybe I missed out on character development over time? Vera was abrasive and obnoxious in this book and didn't treat the officers under her authority like adults or part of the team. More like lackeys although she did seem to realize something about that towards the end.

It is hard to see friends go through this. One of my best friends is in a nursing

OLT | 2480 comments I guess the Real World is not so great for many of us at the moment. So I'm sticking my head in the sand a lot of the time. That means reading a lot of escape fiction and pretending all is right with the world. BTW, HappyBookWorm, I highly recommend watching Vera rather than reading the books. Brenda Blethyn does a beautiful job of portraying Cleeves' heroine. She's better than the books.

I would love to but right now have no time to watch TV. I also have a light sleeper in the house who goes to bed usually by 9PM. That is when I would normally have time to sit down and watch a program ..... I've only watched two series since we moved here over a decade ago. I read instead. Maybe one day .....

I'm not hi-tech either. I tried just reading the captions on the TV. My son's room is down the hall and his door opens to the side. He claims that the flickering light kept him from sleeping. He is a chronic insomniac. I'm not high tech enough to stream lol.

It sounds good but my time at home is chaos. Right now I have three dogs in crates near me and they are just about to start acting out which means I need to go to bed. They were late getting to bed because I did grocery shopping. One of my cats just jumped out of my lap.

Danker | 1030 comments “You come to this place, mid-life. You don’t know how you got here, but suddenly you’re staring fifty in the face. When you turn and look back down the years, you glimpse the ghosts of other lives you might have led; all houses are haunted. The wraiths and phantoms creep under your carpets and between the warp and weft of fabric, they lurk in wardrobes and lie flat under drawer-liners. You think of the children you might have had but didn’t. When the midwife says, ‘It’s a boy,’ where does the girl go? When you think you’re pregnant, and you’re not, what happens to the child that has already formed in your mind? You keep it filed in a drawer of your consciousness, like a short story that never worked after the opening lines.”

Lines from the memoir of the genius Hilary Mantel, who died yesterday, aged. 70. What a loss. Her series about Cromwell will be something I will re- read many times. What an author. What a Mighty Woman.

I am reading a rom-com which is reminding me of why avoid most of them. I'm also old-fashioned enough to prefer my heroine and hero not to be bisexual. Nothing wrong with it, just my preference.

Danker | 1030 comments Thanks Happy Book Worm for the link to the Guardian article. I’m still feeling sad in a selfish way for the books we will never see and this article confirmed what I knew - that she was working on something new. And reminded me that she was 4 years younger then me. Too soon.
