RE Colin Firth.

Several yrs ago NPR did a radio interview w/ Colin. He said
he considered himself a character actor & he had more
interesting acting opportunities this way. I believe he played
a baddie in "The English Patient"?

Roberta2 | 2383 comments HappyBookWorm, I agree with Danker. And after you read P&P, give Emma a whirl.

The Spinster's Captain
A Victorian romance based on a true story. I liked the atypical MCs.
The hero really bungled a MOC proposal.

Interesting. The covers do give a hint as to how much sex is inside. I must say I prefer the closed-door novels,

I just checked and I have to original lithos by Gustav Janet hanging in my bathroom. Original dresses

Carol | 2793 comments I'm sure I mentioned this book before, The Other Bennet Sister, which is on sale today for $2.99 or if you have it, KU. I liked and thought it a very interesting take on the Bennet family.

Danker | 1030 comments Thanks Carol. Just checked $AUS 10.99 and not offered as a title on my KU membership. Even so, I’ve put it on my Wishlist, so thanks for reminding me.

I think she's hit-or-miss. I just read another one of hers, which I plodded through. I thought it was going to be a romantic romp, but it had no romance.

message 1221: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments The Mud Covered one is a novella. Maybe she doesn’t have enough plot for full length books.

message 1225: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments I treated myself to a new Kindle 11 this past prime day, only I got the Kids addition, which was pretty steeply discounted. It's basically the same as the new Paperwhite except no adds, cute cover included, and a 2-year guarantee. The screen is slightly large, has a warm light option, and clearer and it's much faster than my 2018 one.

Very happy customer with less eyestrain.

LOL!

I thought women wanted to ruffle Darcy's hair when he came out of the small pond? Or Darcy could kiss a woman senseless & them give that smile he gave Elizabeth (in the music room).

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Hi all. I know some of you have read the Inspector Pitt novels by Anne Perry. I have read through #19 Bedford Square.

SPOILER

I looked ahead and it looks like Pitt is forced to change jobs because of the Inner Circle. Has anyone read the entire series or most of them? Should I stop now or did you enjoy the later books as well?

message 1232: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Also, OLT, I have read the 4 books in John Pilkington's Marbeck series. It sure ended on a big question mark. I thought perhaps the author continued the series but see he hasn't. Have you read any of his other series, and how do they compare to the Marbeck series?

I wasn't all that happy with the ending of book 4. I suppose we are to imagine whatever we like, but since I am not gruntled these days, it bothered me more than such endings usually do. Maybe I should make my next read a HEA? Or, perhaps I have just read too many murder mysteries in a row.

message 1233: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments Roberta2, I wasn’t all that happy with the Marbeck final book ending either. Since then I ordered the first in the author’s Justice Somebody-or-Other series but couldn’t get into it. Now I have the first book of another series by the Seeker series author (MacLean). Haven’t started it yet. Am reading The Rooftop Party by Ellen Meister that I found on a bargain day. Contemporary mystery/rom-com. Easy breezy writing. A good distraction.

I thought about buying another kindle fire but I already have another one (other than the one I use daily) that I can't find. :( I bought it as a gift for my son but he never used it.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments HBW, Can you read it as a stand alone?

message 1238: by HappyBookWorm2020 (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments Roberta2 wrote: "HBW, Can you read it as a stand alone?"

I think that if you read one book out of order, you may be curious enough to go back and start at the beginning. Ned's story is the last book in the series.

He is not a blood relation but is a valued member of their family and works in the family business. Their father was an abusive monster.

I really liked this series. I've read and enjoyed most of the author's books - there were only a few that I didn't care enough about to re-read.

I haven't read all of the Lady Violet books yet, but I've liked the ones I've read so far. She has two possible love interests hanging around - I'm not sure which one she will pick, or if she will pick one.

Good news - I preordered it. Would like to do a re-read of the previous books.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I read Leonora and the Lion's Venture and thought it was a hot mess. Too many characters and couples. I kept asking myself if some of the characters were people I had read about in previous books and just forgot about them.

Also, the hero had some serious drinking issues.

message 1242: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments I could not get into that new Cameron book. I quit after a couple of chapters. I think I’m done trying out her books. They are progressively getting less and less appealing.

I only got a few chapters in on a HR by Nicola Cornick- too many confusing characters. Life is too short to waste time on confusion.

You are making me feel better. I just read a police procedural thriller and I got lost with all the characters, particularly when they weren't mentioned for many chapters.

Roberta2, the short answer about reading the Burrowes' series out of order is that I think you can, although I don't know what my opinion is worth since I read them all as they were published. :(

Roberta, I think if you should read them in order.

I had to buy some and some I got some through the library. The newest Burrowes' book aren't being picked up by my library either.

Another series I'm waiting for is Lady Violet. I got the first one as a Kindle book and then nada. My library appears to have one hard copy that's shared with dozens of other libraries. So, I'm waiting and have it on a wish list with Libby.

message 1249: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2793 comments Roberta,
Have you read the Wishing Well series by Sofie LaPorte. I thought they were charming and maybe a tad silly. They're KU, so you can read the whole series if you get a month of KU and then cancel.

message 1250: by BJ (last edited Aug 05, 2022 08:01PM) (new)

BJ (barbararhodes) | 123 comments I like Grace Burrowes 'meandering' writing style. She shows a different pace of life.
But I do need the right frame of mind to start a series, as once I start I can't stop. I have 37 of her books in my kindle library, 6 in hard copy and a number on my wish list waiting for a special price.
