Roberta2, I don't think it's you. I can no longer read anything by Campbell. She used to have more interesting, more complicated characters. Now she has cardboard characters and cliched plots and fills the pages with too much sex for the amount of nonsexual interaction. But so many romance authors I used to like do the same thing. Their plots and dialogue have been dumbed down and the pages with sex don't titillate, they bore me.

OLT | 2480 comments I have a silly, funny romance published in 1911 to recommend, although you have to enjoy very much older writing. The Money Moon by Jeffery Farnol, Fiction, Action & Adventure, Historical

I got it for free on Amazon ages ago. Pretty sure you can still find a free version there because it's so old it's in eminent domain.

Thank you. Which books, so very many! Catton, Foote, Chestnut? Are you reading Jeffrey Shaara's books? He is about the most accurate and best civil war authors, his fiction is easier to follow. You are so right, way too many names and battles. I live in Fredericksburg which is surrounded by or considered to be one of about three or four major battlefields of the war; Battle of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness (where so many burned to death) and maybe one other. Manassas is about thirty miles away. I truly dislike how the south has turned their treason (I apologize if you are a southerner. I've spent most of my life in the South and I love it deeply. But....) into a big win. However this is also where George Washington grew up and his mother's, sister's and best friend's houses or businesses are here in Stafford Co or FXBG.

1.Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times
2.Grant
3.Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow
I read 1 & 2, now I'm on #3. Dr. Gates is a tad on the dry side. I enjoy reading history. This was my 7th (?) bio on Abe.

My late Mom was from Louisiana. My bro w/ genealogy research-
he thinks we sibs qualify for Sons & Daughters of Confederacy.
I would not pursue this.

I'm not as well-versed on the Civil War as you. I've read some history or politics writers on other topics: Carol Anderson, Doris Kearns-Goodwin, Jon Meachem, Chris Whipple, Laurence Tribe, Jesse Wegman, Bob Woodward etc.

I may go to Civil War sites. Friends and I planned to check out Lincoln's life in Springfield, Illinois, but friends pooped out. Now some of us don't ambulate as well as we once did.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments For those of you who are interested in history, remember the princes in the Tower who disappeared? Edward and Richard? Well, in one of Jodi Taylor's books, the younger prince was rescued from the Thames where he had been thrown to drown. I love her books - so interesting and quite a lot of historical background that actually happened (unlike the little prince being fished out of the Thames and living to grow up - in the future).

Maureen, it's okay. I actually live in Montgomery, Alabama, and remember vividly when it hit home how many important events had happened here - Civil War, capital of the Confederacy and then you have the birthplace of Civil Rights. I worked with people who were prominent in that fight. Work now with a woman who was one of the first kids to integrate the schools.

I read the start of it and it made my blood boil. Men - her father was selling her to an older man to be his wife because he had gone in debt. Made me nauseous. Patriarchal societies - I have never understood them. They are based purely on men being stronger and more violent (my opinion).

I apologize if this offends anyone.

The mention of Marlene Suson reminded me of the time before ebooks (and before Amazon became a behemoth) when out of print books were hard to get. I bought used paperback copies of those books from used bookstores in my town, and the people who ran them would also order the books for me. I also read some of them through interlibrary loans. One of the authors whose out of print books I read was Mary Balogh. I'd have to look at my bookshelves to see some of the other older authors whose books I sought out. I was never a big fan of bodice rippers.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I looked at Amazon for Sharon and Tom Curtis, and I had reviewed my favorite book by them (Sunshine and Shadow). I think I have two of their books but it would take a while to find them. The Windflower may have been an interlibrary loan. Goodness, I was in my 20's or early 30's when I read these. fyi I changed my amazon review name to PamReviews.

Guess what? When I searched by title, I found that those books are now available as kindle ebooks. I practically had to fan myself. I am going to buy my favorite one - Sunshine and Shadow - and may one day get The Windflower. After reading a couple of reviews, I remembered liking some of the secondary characters in the Windflower more than I did the primary ones. The author's name is now Laura London.

I much prefer Kindle books to DTB's. Easier to read the print and I can hold the Kindle up so I don't have to keep my neck in a bent position.

I just got some kind of update. All my books appear as a book cover instead of a list. Many are impossible to read and very few show on a page. I contacted a representative but he could not resolve the situation. Not happy with the change.

The one I read on Abe was 1k pages. On 'the cloud' I was 5% further along, than on Kindle device, when in the exact same place! LOL!

I hope update issue on your Kindle can be resolved.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I've been dealing with broken stuff in the house.

We had a leak in the washer, got it fixed.

Started leaking again. We got a different contractor who told us that the water was coming from the plumbing in the wall, not the washer.

Meanwhile, the washer is overflowing, so we get someone to snake the pipe - the vent is on the roof. Overflow fixed but the laundry room is a swamp.

The plumbing contractor who came out to check the pipes in the wall claimed that it was a complex leak and he was going to charge us 800. When asked to explain the complex part, his answer was that he would have to cut some studs to replace the pipes. Our home repair warranty is supposed to cover plumbing stuff like fixing pipes.

I got a second opinion and that plumber said that the pipes were not leaking, it was the washer.

The leak is coming from the washer, so we should have an appointment soon to get that fixed. I've been to the laundromat one time with 6 loads of laundry, and that's enough for me.

This has been going on for quite a while. I'm tired.

Summary: Two different leaks from washer, one clogged outlet pipe for the washer. No leaks in the water or waste pipes in the walls. My husband's carpet in the den has to be pulled up.

It could be a washer or a used car (like mine). When it quits working or doesn't work like it was intended, I call it a design flaw. Most likely there are still more male than female engineers? So likely a male designed it and a male will fix it. Men!

James, the plumber who came over to give the second opinion on the pipes in the wall, pointed out to me that it was the washer that was leaking. We had already had a part replaced in it and had a second person out to recheck it ... who claimed the water was coming from the pipes in the wall. So now we are waiting on the appliance repairman to fix the washer .... if he can find the part. It is a 30+ year old Maytag.

I agree. We need so much work done. The back yard is out of control. Part of it is not easily visible and when I went back there, I was stunned. Trees have grown up. I am going to have to hire someone to clear it out. The property is too much for my husband to deal with now.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments HR-ML and Roberta2, we have to hire someone. We have a bank of shrubs by the pool. Hollies. They are currently higher than my head and probably around 8 feet wide ending at the edge of our pool. This will require a chain saw.
