🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments We are doing a lot in this country for Global warming. And paying for it in lots of different ways. We pay lots of extra taxes on items to pay towards helping the climate change,. have stopped the sale of plastics and now use paper or bambo to make items.
It is other bigger country's with their heavy pollution which also need to start following the same line's.
We get our fair share of floods each year.

If I offended you with my light banter I apologise.

I wasn't offended. Just thought you didn't know that it's was serious and not normal. Big oil has been scamming everyone for years with their it's-not-proven-that global-warming-is due-to-fossil-fuel spiel. They have known about global warming since the 1970's but kept on covering it up. They paid off our pols and heads of countries that had oil. We could have been much further along using renewables than we are. And I believe the oil companies are gouging the public now because they are making record profits and their doesn't seem to be a shortage when people go to gas up. No lines here. Don't know about other countries. I sure remember the oil shortage and rationing when Carter was president.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 319 comments UK is doing a lot to help global warming. We have lots of wind farm in the country fields, as well as in the ocean’s . Hydropower , Tidal energy.
The government want all cars electric or eco friendly by 2030 . Though I think that is a bit ambiguous due to the price of them. Only the rich can afford them. I think it will take a few more years, before that will happen.
Where I live. They were going to charge all petrol car’s £7 and van’s £60 a day for using the roads. It should have started next week. But the people would not be able to afford to pay and jobs would be lost. So our mayor went to the government and told them this tax would only make the working class people poorer and it would not affect the rich. So it has been postponed for now.

Carol | 2793 comments EV's will get cheaper as more are produced and sold. Renewable energy is cheaper to produce than fossil fuel. if we were on our way to making the switch, this crisis wouldn't be happening and the oil companies wouldn't be able to take advantage of the situation we find ourselves in. Read Rachael Maddow's book about the fossil fuels industry. Eye-opening.

Roberta2 | 2383 comments If our children and grandchildren are to have any kind of decent future, we need to act now. Global warming is causing and will cause more and more drastic weather events, affecting water and food supplies. I agree with you, Carol, that the oil companies are gouging us right now; they want to suck up all the money they can while poising themselves to invest in whatever will make them money in the future. They are soulless and heartless. Unfortunately, too many politicians here and elsewhere are bribed/bought off.

And I agree with you, Shaz, that it's the working class that are penalized the most. We have our own set of billionaires here in the US who don't want to pay a dime in taxes and yet expect the rest of us to pay. But, we need to make the switch now to more renewables. We can't ignore what global warming is doing to our planet.

For the board: I finished the The Viscount's Lady Novelist. Just cookie cutter. Nothing special.

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I re-read a book that didn't grab me the first time around but with the second read, I think it is one of the best in the series. Part of the problem I had was that I was expecting a romance - and it is a great romance - but the couple doesn't meet until about 1/4 of the book. The couple had other things going on before they met. Boy, did they ever. She was running away from an abusive fiance and he had just gotten out of prison and was looking for a possible traitor.

You Were Made to Be Mine

OLT | 2480 comments Roberta2, for only $2.99 you can get the 4-book "box" set in Kindle of John Pilkington's Martin Marbeck spy series, set during the early 1600s in England. Great bargain, IMO.

NetGalley - you read books before they are published and post a review on the publication date. I recommend it.

https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/?te...

The publisher Avon and Harper Voyage has quite a few historical romance writers publishing with them. They lend to me and I don't have a website or a blog. Eloisa James, Julie Anne Long, Lenora Bell, Beverly Jenkins, Lorraine Heath and others publish with them. There are currently eight historical romance books available to read and review.

This is page 2 where many of them are (but not all):

I also like publishers Kensington and St. Martin's Press.

Miss Scarlet & The Duke, Season #2 starts on PBS 10/16/22.

We all need a break from the crazy real world.

Carol | 2793 comments I finished listening to Marry in Haste. It wasn't a good romance. It wasn't a good mystery. Had lots of stuff throw in that seemed to be there just to fill out the story. Copulation, after marriage, at least three or four times a day, filled out more pages. I got it from my library, but I would not buy it for 7+ bucks.

What streaming service are you using?

We are thinking about doing something like Utube streaming when our kids come home for the holidays/whenever because they don't require any kind of contract like Comcast does.

message 1082: by Danker (new)

Danker | 1030 comments Finished the new Bettina Krahn “White Knight Needed”. Began well. Cant believe I’m adding that it totally lost me. Never thought I’d have to force myself to finish a Krahn title. Never thought a Krahn heroine would provoke such a tepid reaction from me. It’s by no means the first time a HR heroine behaved as if she could blithely ignore massive danger signals - I just have less patience with it.
Despite Krahn’s constant mention of the hero’s protuberant canines (which preyed on my mind as much as that of the young Earl) I quite like him - but, in the current climate, his flair for violence got to me, as well. I enjoy Krahn when she provides me with comedic flair and, in this title, I missed that aspect of her talent - probably because I was yearning for a laugh. I won’t be reviewing this one, but would be interested in the views of any of you who have read it (apologies if I have missed a review or previous comments).

message 1083: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Danker,

I didn't buy it because I missed the discounted price, but now I am glad I passed paying more for this title.

I have read 2 or 3 of Krahn's that I thoroughly enjoyed. Which are your favorites of hers? If I haven't read them yet, I would like to give those titles a whirl.

You are up late. Do you suffer from insomnia? I certainly do.

message 1085: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments I'm with Danker on the White Knight. Very disappointing. I guess Krahn is now the proverbial straw on the camel's back for me. No more new historical romances for me. My escape is now historical fiction and historical mystery.

And I'm with both of you with regard to the insomnia thing. Well, it's not exactly insomnia. I average 4-5 hours of sleep a night, but it really isn't enough for me.

message 1086: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments And I forgot to mention that I have totally lost interest in reviewing books. And I have about ten silly Amazon Vine products that need reviewing there and I can't get myself to sit down and do it. It all seems so pointless.

OLT | 2480 comments Good luck in your search, Danker. If I find anything silly and funny, I'll post about it here. And I'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. "5 years of unending stress and loss and grief" cannot possibly be good for anyone's health. Here's hoping things improve for you.

message 1088: by Danker (new)

Danker | 1030 comments Thanks OLT. At least I don’t live in Ukraine. In comparison, my life is a breeze. I survived OK until last year when I let myself become too ground down. A salutary lesson.
Roberta - I’ve been trying to remember the Krahn books that made me laugh. Have had a quick search. It’s scary, but I can’t remember. OLT may help. Did Krahn write the book about the louse who lived in a pigsty and had a different woman in his bed every night. Didn’t know their names and called them by the name of the day of the week. Hang my feminist head in shame - I should NOT have liked that book - but I treated it as a farce and laughed through it.

I don't know how I missed this post considering it was one of my favorite/most disturbing books (movie?) I read as a child. Maybe my age was to blame.

message 1090: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments Danker,

I hope things get better for you as well. I understand the need to read funny/light, and I don't think you should beat yourself up about liking that book about the louse. Anything that can make us laugh is good.

I felt better after watching Call the Midwife because it made me cry. I realized I needed to cry.

I say the same thing to myself--I don't live in Ukraine or Afghanistan and so on. It doesn't seem to be helping recently. I think it's the lack of sleep especially. Every once in a while I get 6 hours of sleep, and I feel so much better about myself. But, I also realized that I am depressed. I feel the same way I felt after my mother died years ago--in a gray void that seems inescapable.

I am going to try a schedule and see if that helps.

I seem to have the same trouble concentrating as I did during the first year of the pandemic. I have been doing a lot of rereading lately just as I did then.

I have that Pilkington series that you recommended OLT. Maybe I will try that. My husband is reading The Given Day. I don't know if I can read it after him. I think I may need light and fluffy too.

Thanks for sharing your links. Liked your witty review on S. Jeffries book.
Currently I'm reading non-fiction and somewhat lost! The author went into
so much detail on the major battles of General US Grant & General Lee in Civil War.
I was getting the Generals and other officers confused and who fought for which
side. He used their last names. But I sorted out most of it. LOL!

HappyBookWorm2020 | 4294 comments I'm giving all of you a virtual hug. I think stress and depression is the mood du year, actually. So many horrible things going on.

I can't remember exactly what I was reading at the time that lifted my spirits, so here are some recent reads.

I've finished the last book (so far) in Jodi Taylor's St. Mary's series where the main characters go back in time to observe historical events. It's one of my all time favorite series and contains a lot of humor. The books are frequently on sale by the way - I got most of them for $2 or less.

A Catalogue of Catastrophe

I also just finished the latest book in Seanan McGuire's Incryptid series and it was good but had an awful lot of body pain described as in being skinned alive. Yikes. As a matter of fact, I've never read a book with so much vividly described torture. Fits the title. This is not normal for the series.

Spelunking Through Hell

This next one is a funny story with characters from an urban fantasy series. Background: There are people who can do what we would call magic. Every member of this family is an employee of their agency which was started by their dad. Grandmother Frida who was a tank mechanic in the military, the mother who was a sniper, three daughters, and two cousins. They are better off than they used to be but it was a struggle. So this was one of their jobs - they were investigating an embezzling job and the woman who did the stealing has locked herself in a safe room with the baby. The husband is calling for help.

The dialogue is a hoot.

https://ilona-andrews.com/2019/a-misu...

I just read this book by Grace Burrowes and liked it a lot. I think it is the last one in the series. I also re-read a couple of the books previous to it before reading this one.

Never a Duke

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I made the mistake of trying again an author I used to like--Anna Campbell. It is one of her newer titles, and even though I read it yesterday, I can't remember the title just now! What does that say about me? I won't even bother looking it up, because I cannot recommend it. Pages and pages of sex scenes and while I don't have a problem with sex scenes, I find pages and pages rather boring. I am wondering if her older titles had pages of sex scenes, and it just didn't annoy me as much then? But, I seem to remember some character building and some sort of interesting plot in her older titles. It has been years since I read them.
