Trying to get him to read probably wont work then. I tried it with my son. I wanted to give a kids Kindle to my grandchildren, but my DIL preferred that they read real books. Now they're all grown up and read NO books.

Sorry I could not link this: I had the first word wrong.

Thank you for the link. I have bought a few books from this author and current reviews suggest this is one of her best.

When I found it in Nov 2020 I was very pleasantly surprised by it, since, in general, Emma Leech's stories are not quite to my taste. But this one has been added to my re-read Christmas list, along with Jayne Fresina's "Snow" stories, some Mary Balogh and some Carla Kelly.

Was it to learn English or to lose his Bahamian English accent?

I thought I read it was to learn (American) English. He was age 15 and alone in NYC & had a dishwashing job.

message 663: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 | 2383 comments I read Poitier's autobiography years ago. He came across as quite egotistical but maybe he needed to feel superior to break through in the film industry at a time when there really weren't any people of color except in minor roles. I loved his films. He was exceedingly charismatic.

Nobody seems to know. It has been quite a while since her last book. Was that the one about Lockwood? And I'm linking you to something interesting from 2011. It seems that Duran has a younger sister who also writes books, but they are, I believe, YA and fantasy.

I read your reviews and noticed they were both 4 stars. It's good to have another historical romance author to add to the read-list. Some of my old favorite authors have fallen off the list. :(

I have not been that impressed with Mary Balogh's newest series or Anne Gracie's newest books. :(

I'd like to recommend Grace Burrowes' Lady Violet series. I read the first book and really enjoyed it. The book I read focused on the mystery although there were two romantic interests for Lady Violet. They are long-time friends of hers. Her husband died two years before and had been unfaithful to her. They had no children, a disappointment to her.

Lady Violet Investigates

FYI I don't know about overseas rules, but I usually get her books to review because I signed up for her blog and leave comments when she posts if anyone is interested in reviewing. I have both Miss Delightful and the first Violet book to read and review.

Miss Dignified by G. Burrowes
I liked the MCs but they got lost in the heroine's family drama.
The first 2 in series were better, IMO.

Thanks for Lady Violet: I like romance-mysteries.

Do you find many "prickly" dissenters to your opinion here on Goodreads? That used to be the case on Amazon, I know, because the comments left at reviews could be quite unpleasant at times, but here at GR I find comments to be much more civil.

Maybe half dozen? Sometimes I erase them. GR generally is
more civil. I don't expect everyone to agree but using tact
should apply to everyone. One reviewer called me a racist!

message 675: by OLT (new)

OLT | 2480 comments HR-ML, is this at your reviews of non-fiction books about government and politics? We are such a polarized society now that any little comment can trigger some people's wrath. But I think that reviews of romance novels are fairly safe from that.

The racist comment was under the autobio of Cicely Tyson. I erased it.

I have done book reviews on POTUS, SCOTUS, Congress, FBI/ CIA/ Secret Service, Trump, police, mental health, political families, true crime etc. Most feedback was + or we agreed to disagree. We Were 8 Years in Power. No push-back on this one. Not that I'm complaining.

60 Minutes had last night the man who started Story Corps in 2003, and now One Small
Step. The purpose of the latter is to find common ground, between 2 politically opposed persons.

Revised.

I had to read Miss Dignified twice before I could understand what was going on. This was a romance but there was a larger plot behind it that it took me a while to figure out. The bad guy got his comeuppance at the end, and the main couple figured everything out. I liked it.

I'm being deliberately vague because when I finally figured out what was going on and got all the family relationships straight - wow. A villain and a hero.

You are reading serious books, not just fiction and some of them are hot topics. It's a shame that it is hard to have civil discussions and debate issues. It's one reason I appreciate this group so much.

I grew up with a parent who enjoyed arguing (debating). We could switch sides.

HBW----

Miss Dignified. Who was who was confusing to start.

When I was younger, I enjoyed informal debates. They exhaust me now. I don't let the author being conservative or liberal effect my book review. If the book has no new material, I note it. If the subject of the profile has an image problem or inconsistency, I note it. Reviews are less fun for me than they formerly were.

On rom reviews, I don't want to argue with a poster yes/ no was the h TSTL? LOL!

I can't remember the last time I read anything serious. I did enjoy Miss Dignified after the second read when I figured out what was happening. Half of the book was romance, and half of it was about former soldiers protecting a man who had protected them. Miss Dignified was also looking for her missing brother. It was a more complex plot than most romances and very well done. I feel bad about giving away that much.

This is MOC with h needing to marry after being compromised.
She's a great heroine, H and built relationships with his staff by treating them as people not servants. Little bit of steam suited the plot. It's book 3 in the series, so I immediately bought 1-2.

And you don't even own them. Can't lend them. Can't give them to someone. I'm finding my library very useful. Can't find everyone I want to read, but I can certainly find enough to keep me reading.

That's been a puzzle to me for a while now. I won't buy any romance that costs more than five or six dollars, maybe seven if it's a favorite author. Why an e-book has to cost from ten to fourteen dollars now is beyond me. And another gripe: It used to be possible to get them at reduced prices after they had been out for a while but very few to no good ones are found when I check the Daily Deals.

I have noticed that, and many books are even higher than that. I think part of it is linked to the publisher. I looked it up and the article I read suggested it was also because we have fewer readers.

That article must have been put out by the publishers because everything I'vr read says reading has increased since the pandemic started. They're charging more because they can.
