Jen K | 3153 comments A very sweet, though predictable, read which I enjoyed especially the penguins. Veronica has done well for herself but is mostly alone and set in her ways in her manor house in Scotland with only a companion and gardener for company. At 85 she decides to research the possibility of family and finds a lost grandson, Patrick. After meeting him doesn't go all that well, she decides to travel to Antarctica to check out a small penguin research team in consideration of leaving her wealth with them instead of the grandson. Despite being told repeatedly not to come to the harsh climate and basic accommodation, Veronica still arrives and finds herself opening up in unexpected ways as she visits with the penguins. Patrick similarly finds himself intrigued with this new granny after also being alone most of his life.

The story is sweet with a detour to Veronica's teen years in England during WWII. Everyone is slightly damaged but nothing that a fluffy baby penguin can't help mend. I appreciated the personalities and especially the penguins.

Love this sentiment on the book! Who can resist an adorable baby penguin!

Lovely! Veronica is a bit of a curmudgeon but in a fun way.
