I read this book earlier this month. It is set in a small town just south of Salinas... but all the place names are changed in the book. The actual name of the place was Confederate Corners (recently changed to Springtown) but in the book it was called Rebel Corners.
In the novel there are many characters gathering at a restaurant while a bus is being repaired in the garage outside. All the characters have major flaws.. not unlike normal human beings! John Steinbeck was a master of character description.
Eventually they get on the bus, but circumstances are not favorable. I refuse to tell more... I don't like giving spoilers.
