Ingmar Weyland | 5493 comments

fix summary -

fix summary -

Ingmar Weyland | 5493 comments The Taming of the Demons: From the Epic of Gesar of Ling

A newly translated volume of the centuries-old spiritual epic of King Gesar.

For centuries, the epic tale of Gesar of Ling has been told across Asia. This epic is a living oral tradition, performed widely by singers and bards and beloved especially in Tibet. Considered the longest single piece of literature in the world canon, the epic of Gesar chronicles the legend of King Gesar of Ling, a heroic figure known for his fearless leadership. The epic encompasses some 120 volumes and nearly 20 million words, and there are numerous versions across cultures.

This book is the first English translation of the fourth volume of this sweeping literary work, with stories from after Gesar's coronation to the throne of Ling. This volume focuses on battles won and strategies applied, as the warrior-king Gesar fended off demons and liberated his foes. Though largely a violent account focused on his superhuman prowess in battle, this volume is rich with ethical proverbs that inform Tibetan culture to this day. A significant work of legend, the epic of Gesar is also a vital part of Tibetan Buddhism, as Gesar is said to have been chosen by celestial beings to restore order and destroy anti-Buddhist forces.

The epic of Gesar is the cultural touchstone of Tibet, analogous to the Iliad or the Odyssey. While Book One covers Gesar's birth, youth, and rise to power, this volume recounts the martial victories and magical feats that made him a legendary figure to so many.

Ingmar Weyland | 5493 comments The Intolerant Middle Ages: A Reader

The Intolerant Middle Ages is a collection of primary sources on the history of persecution. The goal of the book is to highlight instances of persecution and violence, as well as those relatively rare but significant episodes of toleration, toward an intentionally broad spectrum of people who existed at the margins of medieval society: heretics, Jews and Muslims, the poor, the displaced and disabled, women, and those deemed sexually deviant. The volume also presents a more geographically diverse Middle Ages by including sources from Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Mediterranean.

Sources are organized in thematic chapters, covering everything from "Heresy and Inquisition" to "Disease and Disability." Each document is preceded by a brief introduction and followed by questions for discussion, making The Intolerant Middle Ages an excellent entrance into the lives and struggles of minorities in the medieval world.

Ingmar Weyland | 5493 comments Eight Dogs, or "hakkenden": An Ill-Considered Jest, Being the First 14 Chapters of Nansao Satomi Hakkenden

Kyokutei Bakin's Nansō Satomi hakkenden is one of the monuments of Japanese literature. This multigenerational samurai saga was one of the most popular and influential books of the nineteenth century and has been adapted many times into film, television, fiction, and comics.

An Ill-Considered Jest, the first part of Hakkenden, tells the story of the Satomi clan patriarch Yoshizane and his daughter Princess Fuse. An ill-advised comment forces Yoshizane to betroth his daughter to the family dog, creating a supernatural union that ultimately produces the Eight Dog Warriors. Princess Fuse's heroic and tragic sacrifice, and her strength, intelligence, and self-determination throughout, render her an immortal character within Japanese fiction.

Eight Dogs is the culmination of centuries of premodern Japanese tale-telling, combining aspects of historical romance, fantasy, Tokugawa-era popular fiction, and Chinese vernacular stories. Glynne Walley's lively translation conveys the witty and colorful prose of the original, producing a faithful and entertaining edition of this important literary classic.

Ingmar Weyland | 5493 comments Welcome to Hell

"When the fantasy is all that’s left, the impulse is to get lost in it. You want to forget that you’re an arm above the water and your legs are giving out."

Modernity is Hell. It's a sentiment shared by many people, even if they aren't honest enough to admit it. But what is Hell? Hell is the impermanence of identity, the death of authenticity, the absence of love. It's the unsettling nothing you feel as you amble to work and back, numbingly consuming pop culture pleasures, sleepwalking your way through dead-end sexual encounters. Hell is the void, the death of God, the blurring of reality and fantasy, your own consciousness lost in the stew.

Welcome to Hell is a clear-eyed, touching examination of the world we live in. Equal parts memoir, cultural critique, meditation, and lament, "Bad" Billy Pratt's literary debut traces a poignant line through his failed relationships and other life experiences, painting a stark picture of the abyss that we've been condemned to.

"Billy Pratt wanders and wonders through the ruins of what is left of our civilization and provides poolside musings on the façade of what passes for human relationships in our atomized present day. With more than a helping of melancholy and longing for things which are now past, Pratt writes in the mold of Delicious Tacos midway through an existential crisis. Enjoy these Despairing Tacos." — Mencius Moldbugman, contributor to Ending Bigly: The Many Fates of Donald Trump

"This collection is, as they say, a mood; an elegy for lost Americana, a memory of a place you've never been. If seduction is getting lost in the incomparable alienage of the other, and writing is teasing out the universal from the particular, then Billy tries to capture a universal sense of feeling lost. You will be able to see how much he cares." — Zero HP Lovecraft, author of The Gig Economy and God-Shaped Hole

Ingmar Weyland | 5493 comments The Private Life of Helen of Troy

“A humorous, wise, and beautiful book” about Helen’s life following the notorious scandal (The New York Times).

Picking up after the Trojan War, this novel follows the reunion of Helen of Troy with Menelaus and their return to Sparta together. A bestseller in its day and a clever take on the ancient myth from the female point of view, it explores Helen’s feelings about the two men in her life and her reflections on marriage in general, the power and perils of beauty, and the strains on a relationship after a dramatic disruption.

Originally published in the wake of the women’s suffrage movement, The Private Life of Helen of Troy is a witty, inventive novel casting one of the great characters of Western literature in the starring role.
