@Saar - hope the second time’s a charm :-) I went a different route this time and selected The Palace of Illusions about a strong woman in Hindu mythology. I hope you enjoy it!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Vicki.
You are right, I should kill off that trilogy. I have been putting it off for way too long. I just downloaded The Atlantis Worldfrom Audible. I hope I can remember enough of the events from the second story, but if not, I own all three books now. 😊

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments This morning, I was thinking I should go ahead and delete my buddy challenge folder, but then it occurred to me that we could do this challenge again in the future and maybe it would be fun to see what was left on that shelf. I know - silly things that tickle my fancy from time to time.

Christina ❤️M❤️ (christir1159) | 1 comments @Janice, I was thinking that the list might come in handy for possible other challenges... but your right, that would interest me also.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Vicki - I found the need to review the stories in the two books proceeding The Atlantis World after starting the book. I am currently in the middle of the second book, The Atlantis Plague. There are so many characters and time lines going on. I was lost almost as soon I started the third book. Some of the events jumped out right away but the character names and their relationships are slower to come back. It is almost like The Passage trilogy, in that respect. I am glad I own the audiobooks but I almost wish I owned the text copies too.

Oh no! I didn't mean to get you reading three books lol. Physical books are definitely better for flipping back and skimming. I get annoyed when there is a lot of recap in series books but it probably really does help out those who've got a lot of series on the go and let a few lapse over the years.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4027 comments Hi everyone

Apologies for being late to the party.
Can I be assigned a buddy?
This is my shelf - https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 173: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1506 comments I started reading The Dictionary of Lost Words. It’s been on my TBR for a while now, and I was glad that my buddy chose it for me. I’d heard other people say that they loved it, and historical novels are one of my favourite genres. And let’s face it, what reader doesn’t love words? However, I just couldn’t get into this book. It just seemed flat to me, and I felt that I couldn’t care less about the main character. Usually I will read for an hour or two in the afternoon if I’m home, but I found myself thinking of other things to do - bake a cake, wash the floor, tidy the pantry. I’d rather be reading though, so I’ve abandoned this one. The rest of the words are lost to me now. Sorry, but I won’t be completing this challenge.

Shirley - I think your buddy can pick another book for you, since the one picked did not work out. There is still time to finish another book.

message 175: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1506 comments I’d rather not, Cherie. Not really in the spirit of the Challenge?

So sorry Pragya, of course you can! This thread didn't appear on my notifications, wasn't ignoring you at all.

According to the random list picker, Kristie will be picking a read for you.

message 177: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Shirley wrote: "I’d rather not, Cherie. Not really in the spirit of the Challenge?"

You know what. This challenge already breaks the rules when it comes to that, which says you don't have to finish the book to get a badge.

And you can always read another book for a challenge no matter the month. Some people do and go for the higher points if that's the aim.

If you want, Shirley, you can always ask your buddy to pick you another. You've got a book off your shelf, which is useful. Maybe they'll pick you one you love...

I'm sorry you didn't like the book Shirely, I enjoyed it a lot. I'd be happy to pick again for you - you have a few others I was tempted by but maybe you've had enough challenging reads for this month ;-)

message 180: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Shirley | 1506 comments Here's my shelf.

message 183: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11629 comments OK, my next choice is West with the Night.

Ever since I read Circling the Sun I've wanted to read this but it's not available here on audio so you can read it for me! I was very tempted to choose The Rapture which I loved. It's great to have the opportunity to have a nosey through other peoples book shelfs without feeling stalkerish about it 😆

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I'm starting The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion today, which Janice picked for me.

message 185: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, Shirley, I hope you like West with the Sun.
I thought it was a terrific story! It is not too long and written well. Easy to read. She was quite an amazing woman, IMO! Great pick, Margo!

message 186: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments It's funny that it seems like sometimes we have books that sit on our TBR for awhile because deep down we know that we won't enjoy them as much as we want to :) It seems like from the report thread that about half of the books have been "meh" for the readers. I have been trying to take books off my TBR that I really don't think I want to read - or are just there because of a past challenge prompt lol!

Thanks Margot. I’m very excited about reading this book for the challenge. My library has it on the shelf so I’ll pick it up tomorrow. And I love the cover of the edition they have. West with the Night by Beryl Markham

The book I read for the challenge was one I received recently as a World Book Day free offering. It had high reviews, but it wasn't to my taste. Sometimes they are hidden gems.

But I know what you mean about books that I've had on my TBR for ever. I buy books and then I keep passing them over for one reason or another. I had one that I kept putting off - Doomsday Book. I dreaded reading it, but last month I finally got to it and then I wondered why I waited so long. Sometimes they are a hit and others are a miss.

Some of the books I have on my to read list for years is because I have heard so much about them I don't want to read them in case they are a disappointment. But of course, the longer you leave it, the bigger the hype, the harder to meet expectations.

Othertimes I'm like Janice and swear about how long it took for me to read something.
