Steve Earle's: I Can't Remember We said Goodbye
JD Hollingsworth: Frankenstein's Paradox or Spring Valley Ape
Jim White: Superwhite

It has the same ribald irreverance of Caldwell's God's Little Acre and Tobacco Roadbut in a slightly different format. And when I first saw Billy Bob Thornton's SlingBlade I felt a strange kinship between that film and this book. I wonder if that's a thang.
Nick, ribald is a good word. First time I saw that word was in a cormac book. Or at least remembered it sticking out. I’m going to take a look at this book.

Pre-1980: Go Down, Moses
Post-1980: The Saddest Words: William Faulkner's Civil War by Michael Gorra

We have four excellent nominations for each category so far. Some folks have suggested biographies of southern musicians but haven't actually said that they want to nominate one. That sounds like a good idea as there are a lot of good ones out there. I, for one, would like to read Rick Bragg's biography of Jerry Lee Lewis. Unfortunately, unless somebody works up the gumption to actually nominate one of these books, I can't but it in the polls. That's a hint folks.
With some reservations, I will nominate The Sweetness of Water, by Nathan Harris for post-1980. I say with reservations only because this is brand new, an Oprah pick, and getting lots of rave reviews, so it may be difficult to get from libraries because of waiting lists. It sounds like it's right up our alley.

This looks so good!
Here's one more for the pre-1980 list: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Now we only need one more in each category to wrap this up.

”Set deep in the Appalachian wilderness between te years of 1779 and 1784, The Land Breakers is a saga like Norse sagas or the Book of Genesis, a story of first and last things,of the violence of birth and death, of inescapable sacrifice amd the faltering emergence of community.”
Discussion boards will be set up for each book soon.
