This is the second in the DCI Will Blake crime novels. Set on the Wirral it takes place over a very short period, 8th to the 17th of February, and is jam packed with action, with a fast moving storyline.
Having a familiarity with the setting certainly helps bring the story to life, but the unsettling downside is that it brings home how many of us could be in close proximity to a serial murderer at any given time. The quiet, suburban close, where a lot of the action takes place, has a veritable feast of secrets and shade. Do you really know what your neighbours in Upton get up to behind closed doors? Unnerving, surprising, but undoubtedly entertaining.

It is a cleverly written, fast paced crime procedure story. Populated by interestingly quirky characters, housing their own secrets and pasts. We are slowly being introduced to the psyche behind the main character Will Blake, and his past has come back to haunt him in a very bloody, targeted act of serial murder.

The book was gory in places, and the modus operandi both meticulously planned, and cleverly executed (forgive the pun) by an evil genius. Even when I guessed who it was I was still so invested in the story that I was carried along with a mixture of tension and morbid curiosity.

Another winner from the pen of J.E Mayhew.
