I just started reading this. I'm in chapter one. So far I like it... there's humor I can relate with.

It won the California Book Award for Fiction in 1976 and the National Book Award in 1977.

It starts in California c. 1974 but also goes back to the protagonist's younger years in Denmark c. 1954.
