It's a story about a community living on a tiny island in the Chesapeake Bay. Journalist Anders Caldwell is sent there by his newspaper to report on the islanders' annual cake walk day. What actually captures his interest is how everyone on the island treats Tom, the invisible husband of Piper Parrish. Tom has drowned in a boating accident, but Piper and everyone else talks to him as if he is there. The more that Anders tries to investigate this, the more emotionally attached he gets to the people of Frick Island and especially, the lively and lovely Piper.

I found the story to be pleasant, but bland.
