Acacia (acaciaa) I was debating whether or not to use the F word when Sophia slams the door in Caitlin's face. I didn't, although it would have been appropriate.

True.

Lol. Witty insults are always better. They're funnier and more interesting to read. XD

Of course, I didn't have much of a choice with Abba from Life in D Minor ...

message 404: by Niki (new)

Niki | 2381 comments I agree. Morgan doesn't seem like the type to drop the f-bomb.

Speaking of swearing in writing, it looks like for this NaNoWriMo thing, I'm going to have to for the first time. Well, almost the first time.

Really? o.o You describe gruesome death-scenes and psychopath killers, but don't say a couple swear words in writing? Lol... All righty then, we learn something new every day.

I don't swear in my writing....but sometimes it might seem nessecary. There ARE different words you can use though that are slightly less offensive to readers...xD

Maybe they're less offensive, but they don't sound as natural. You aren't going to catch a twenty-year-old saying "Gosh dang it, I just broke up with my boyfriend. Golly wolly, how will I go on?"

message 419: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments Well I don't say things like that! Seriously though, some words are very similiar and I have heard people of that age say them.

Thats a good point, lol. I rarely actually cuss in real life, but in my books my characters swear some.... More than I do, but I figure its not exactly 'me' saying that but, instead a 17-year-old guy with a snappy personality... Yeah...

message 421: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments Yes. Sometimes I feel like a swear word would fit well in a conversation my RP character is having with a murderer, but I don't feel comfortable swearing.

But if something really bad happens to your character, they're going to get passionate about it. Is every one of your characters a perfect little christian? Just because YOU don't swear, doesn't mean your characters can't.

message 423: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments Actually none of my characters are Christians, a lot of the mare under the age of 18 and I don't feel like swearing, it's not the only way to be passionate you know!

I just noticed something really, rather ironic... My characters are supposably angels, and they swear alot of the time...

message 425: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments I just write my characters, a lot of thought goes into it but really, they don't have beliefs yet.

message 426: by Niki (new)

Niki | 2381 comments Do you not feel comfortable because you don't want your charrie to swear, or because your mom doesn't want your character to swear? Because you can't write for someone else.

message 427: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments Holly wrote: "Do you not feel comfortable because you don't want your charrie to swear, or because your mom doesn't want your character to swear? Because you can't write for someone else."

I do not write for others, I write simply because I need a way to express myself, and I have a knack for it. I don't like swearing, it is my personal view, but I read stories and have friends who swear. My mom knows that, it doesn't matter. But the poepl I sometimes base my characters on help me decide whether or not they should swear. And at the moment, none of my stories have come to such a pressing point that they would need to swear.

Kriss wrote: "I just noticed something really, rather ironic... My characters are supposably angels, and they swear alot of the time..."

Sella Malin | 3094 comments I understand what you mean by not being comfortable swearing in your writing. But you have to remember, it's the character who's swearing, not you. And sometimes you can't avoid it. I mean, if a 30000 pound piano just fell on a character, I doubt he or she would say "Shoot." or "Crap." Same with if they just dropped their briefcase of 100000000 dollars into the ocean.

For some odd reason I cracked up reading those... I can completely picture the images... But my characters would say something far from the lines of "crap" or "shoot"

message 437: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments I know. I'm just saying, my stories don't really have that type of situation, but I understand when things are needed. And just to tell you....;)..if a piano fell, I'd be killing my charrie on purpose. lol

I don't use swearing in my writing either. But if you really feel like your character needs to express their anger like that in their story, you might say, "I cussed under my breath" or something like that. Or you could always go for the "@!#*%&$" approach. Hahaha.

message 446: by Sella (new)

Sella Malin | 3094 comments Lol you guys. Well obviously the piano one is a bad example because they wouldn't have much time to say anything. But think of the other example, the one where they drop 1000000 dollars into the ocean or something. Or even one where they leave their huge 100 point homework project due the next day at school, and the school is locked.

And yes, Oceanwaves, I stole the piano example from Brigid. XD

You have to admit, though, that dropping a piano on a character would be a pretty comic way to kill a character, even if it's not the most intense. It sure is the funniest. XD
