Read in the 1990's. Future where an expensive book that is created to bond with one specific child connects the child with stories portrayed by actors. The book in question gets mis-laid and ends up in the hands of the "wrong" child, the girl protagonist. The book in the story connects to actors whenever opened. The actors are supposedly not identifiable since everything is programmed but they are still needed since machines can never exactly replicate humans. Girl ends up attached to one of the actors who mentors her
