gate break (semi-advanced) discussion

It was twenty years ago when it all started, January 23rd, 2073. Something appeared in the midst of Washington DC. It was nothing like anyone had ever seen before, something straight out of a video game. From there, something calling itself a Dokkaebi, a creature from Korean folklore, revealed itself and announced that if they did not send anyone into the gate by the end of the week, and if the gate was not defeated, then something called a gate break would occur and many monsters from that gate would flood into the world. However, America was not the only one facing this problem. After the first gate appeared there, gates appeared in capitals all over the world. Not only that, the leader of each nation was killed by this creature. The government was thrown into an uproar, as they tried to send their soldiers into these gates only for none to return. The problem was that their technology did not work inside these gates, so they couldn't bring their tanks or anything. Not that it would work of course, because bullets did not work on these monsters. This was revealed three days later when a lone soldier managed to make his way out of the gate, half dead.
After many failed attempts, the end of their week was nearing. The gate break would occur. It was sudden and a nightmarish event. However, it was in the midst of the chaos that people began to 'awaken' all across the world. These people who awakened suddenly had new powers you'd only see in comics or video games. Because of this sudden awakening, people had been given the ability to push back. In America, five 'heroes' came forward. These five managed to rally those with abilities and became the main driving force in defeating the master of the gate and closing it. Soon after hearing the news, other nations began to follow. However, upon the closing of each nation's first gate, more began to show up all over the world. If they did not defeat the master of the gate in a week's time, gate breaks would occur.
With this sudden new realization, something called the star stream also came with this disastrous situation. The starstreams was a streaming platform for these things called constellations. These constellations are higher beings that simply have too much time on their hands and are extremely bored, using the starstreams as a form of entertainment, similar to that of human streaming platforms. By watching these starstreams, the dokkaebis receive something called karma points just for the constellations watching, and more every time constellation decides to 'sponsor' a 'player' that isn't their own avatar. However, because of these constellations and streaming platform run by the dokkaebis, those who awaken have these game-like menus. It's something that displays all of their info, such as their name, age, title, abilities, level, etc. And every time a constellation takes interest in a person's actions, they receive a message that appears before them. Sometimes it may just be a constellation's disapproval in their actions or personality. However, it's hard to tell who each constellation is, as they use 'handles' similar to how humans use online usernames. However, it's usually something to do with them. Some can be traced back to great figures in human history or gods are known to humankind, some aren't.
Regardless of everything, while it's dangerous, there are also plenty of benefits. Such as the rewards from the gates. However, gates aren't the only thing humans have to worry about. To get more viewers or to keep their viewers interested so they don't jump to a different dokkaebi's starstream, dokkaebis all over often host these 'scenarios', which often puts many in danger. However, they must complete these scenarios or there will be penalties. Sometimes, the penalty is death, sometimes it's just them taking karma points from the 'player'/'awakened.' There are rewards for each scenario though, and if you have the skill to complete it, then it's very beneficial, even if it seems tedious.
As it's been many years since the start of this, humans are beginning to get into the hang of things. 80% of the population consists of the awakening, even if the human population has dwindled a bit.
World 'Government'
The previous system in place for the 'government' has completely crumbled since the appearance of these gates and strange creatures previously thought to be nothing but folklore.
In the midst of everything, 'players' all over the world have formed these things called guilds. At the head of every guild is a powerful 'player'/'hunter'/'awakened' (these are all names that they are called). Now, it is the 'hunters' that hold the most power in this world, however, as more and more of the population awakened with time, more measures needed to be taken. After much discussion was made between the strongest hunters and guilds, five years after the chaos, the hunters association was formed. In each country, there is something similar to a company, or our previous government. This is the hunter association. Such as the 'hunter's association of America.' These people are there to keep things in order and to keep players in check. Among this association, the chairman sits at the top of each country. Though, that does not mean they are an absolute power. They are still at the mercy of the dokkaebis and often clash with some hunters. However, those in these positions are highly respected and the chairmen/women are those who cannot be corrupt or show favoritism.
It is the hunters association that keeps guilds in check and even created a system. So too many guilds don't pop up, there is procedures and steps one must take to submit a guild, and even then they can be declined. Guilds cannot abuse their power over weaker or normal citizens, and in order to monopolize gates, they must pay quite a sum.
In order to enter a gate, they must be first ranked by the hunter's association (using tools to measure them). Once they are ranked, a party won't be allowed to enter or defeat the gate unless they have a minimum of ten people. This was set up for the safety of hunters. In order to lead these parties, there must be someone of rank or above. For example, if it was a C rank gate, there must be at least one B rank or three C ranks.
Ranking
This is ordered from strongest to weakest
S Rank
A Rank
B Rank
C Rank
D Rank
E Rank
Unawakened - 'Normal' Citizens.
Players/Hunters are ranked by these standards, and so are gates. Upon awakening, they must be tested to determine their rank. Unawakened cannot enter gates or join guilds. They must be tested at a yearly interval, or upon request.
Gates are measured using a similar machine to how they rank hunters. These handheld machines measure the magic compacity, ranking the gates based on how much magic and activity the machine picks up. Sometimes, gates can be measured incorrectly. S Rank gates are extremely dangerous, and while they are hard to handle, not even most S rank hunters can handle an S-Ranked gate on their own, despite being the highest-ranked Hunters.
They do not have the technology to determine any rank higher than S for hunters. So, while they are on the same rank, not every S-ranked hunter is equal in ability and power. To be determined S-Ranked, the machine must come back as 'undetermined' or 'unreadable.' during testing. This is because the machines can measure even the lowest amount of power. However, after a certain level, it cannot measure past its compacity. Because of this, S-ranked hunters' abilities are hardest to determine.
Starstreams & Avatars
The starstreams are a basic streaming platform, however, it is only available for higher beings such as the 'constellations'. The constellations can watch as they please and can even switch between 'channels.' Regular humans do not have access to these channels.
Constellations can choose an 'avatar' to sponsor, it usually being someone of great interest to them. They can sponsor many, however, they usually only focus on one particular avatar, and whole they may 'sponsor' many, it's usually the avatar of the most interest that receives the most benefits. Smaller constellations cannot afford to have many avatars or even help their sponsor and be as involved as some of the bigger constellations. Karma points are sort of a currency amongst them.
Individuals who are sponsored often receive a greater amount of karma points, as well as benefits. Some constellations even share an 'ability' with them. These abilities are known to be very beneficial and strong and are unique to that avatar, as it is the constellation's own skill, granted, nerfed greatly.
Players choose their avatars, though, not much is known about them and no one can ever be too sure, so you might get unlucky. A player could get a lot of offers, and then decline them all, like how one could do in a game.
Karma Points
Karma points are currency amongst the Dokkaebis and the constellations. However, players who receive these karma points can use them to buy items from the Dokkaebis as well as level up their skills. They can even buy things from others players by trading their points in return. However, to do things like level up or buy items costs a lot of karma points, so it's best to let them accumulate and level up their skills in different ways.
You may never know when you may need karma points, so it's also better to save as much as you can.
Humans still have their forms of currency and everything, just some things can only be bought with Karma Points.
Constellations must pay a fee to the channel for those they wish to give karma points to if it's not one of their own avatars.
Abilities
Hunters have specific 'classes' or 'roles.' Their abilities are often based on these roles. These roles are given to them after a careful analysis of their skills. Constellations are often picked with this in mind as well, as they have class-specific abilities themselves. For example, a blacksmith might want to pick a constellation whose interest is in that category and can give them a job-specific skill. Here are the roles. They also resemble those you would see in a game.
Tanker - This class refers to Hunters who specialize in absorbing and blocking incoming attacks from enemies, they usually have heavy armor and high endurance. These are usually those large in size and have plentiful defense-based skills, as well as an agro skill to make the monsters focus on them. They are slow and often in place in battle, however, when they hit, they hit hard.
Healer - These aren't very common, but healers are those who have abilities that allow them to heal or buff others. How much healers can heal is based on their rank and ability. Some healers can only hear minor scratches, while some really good healers can grow you a new limb. It drains a lot of their energy though, and healers don't usually have attack-based abilities. Those rare few who can give buffs, can give many different buffs to their teammates for ranged times. Strength, defense, durability, stamina, etc. Those who can do 'buffs' are usually held to high standards and are often quickly recruited. They are protected by the association even if they weren't in a guild.
Fighters - This class mostly specializes in their high attack and defense with a higher preference for using melee weapons.
Mages - Hunters who have magical abilities, this class can use their mana to create elemental attacks and blasts at their leisure. They also can enact curses and summonings to fight for them. They use a lot of mana though. These players often have high amounts of intelligence, however, they also need large amounts of stamina and mana capacity. Items bought can be used to restore or increase mana.
Assassins - These guys specialize in stealth and speed. They usually carry light weapons and have stealth-based skills.
Ranger - Specializes in long-distance attacks. Rangers are able to deliver high levels of damage to enemies with fast speed and have good agility. However, they suffer from low defenses and are weak when in close proximity to their enemies.
Blacksmiths - They are weaponsmiths with great skill in creating weapons. These are rare in a few and are often sponsored by higher-level constellations. They can create items and weapons imbued with mana, elements, and spirits. They can create high-level weapons that only hunters can use, however, they aren't as great as Legendary classed weapons that you can receive as drops or from dungeons (extremely rare), however, they are often from B to A ranked items.
All Rounders - All-rounders are those who don't have a specialization or role. They can gather an assortment of skills, however, they cannot truly 'master' anything and their skills are likely to be weaker than those in specific classes. for example, if they had what is usually known as a tanker skill, it will be weaker than that of an actual tanker, but stronger than that of those who have other classes.
If I'm missing anything or you want a class to be added, please say so in the appropriate thread.
Gate Breaks
Gate breaks occur when the gate's boss is not defeated in the allotted time. When this happens, monsters begin to leave the gates and flooding the area, causing mayhem. The type of monsters depends on the difficulty and the gate. Because it's dangerous to leave gates unnoticed, routine checks are necessary, as to not overlook any new gates. Upon find a gate, you must report it to the authorities. If you go into a gate without doing so, you can face serious jail time. If a hunter reports a gate, as the first person to discover and report it, they have a claim over the gate, but only if they meet the requirements.
Gates have a lot of good materials, such as mana crystals, which is a valuable resource. Monsters drop mana stones as well, and while the mana crystals aren't as valuable as those drops, they still are pretty valuable. Hence why there are usually different teams in a professional raid. A team that goes in and massacres everything but the boss (so it doesn't close the gate), a team to get the carcasses (which also go for a lot), and another team that mines the crystals. Doing it this way guarantees maximum profits. Sometimes, monsters and bosses drop really good loot and weapons as well, usually unique to those dungeons.
Red Gates
Red gates are an unknown phenomenon. Red gates appear normal until people enter, then instead of its blue glow, it becomes red. Normally, one can enter and exit a gate as they please until the boss is defeated. However, with red gates, it traps you and puts you in very dangerous situations, and unless you defeat the boss, you can't get out. The three terrains one may see in a red gate is desert, rainforest, and a wintery tundra. Within the desert, you might succumb to the heat and monsters. Within the rainforest, poisonous monsters are everywhere. Within the tundra, the worst one should worry about are the ice elves. They are incredibly dangerous.
S-Ranked Gates
S ranked gates are considered a catastrophe. An S-Ranked gate, if gone undefeated, can lead to massive deaths along with perhaps even losing land. There have been a few in islands, which are now desolate and overrun by monsters. Monsters evolve over time, so this can slowly become an even more dangerous situation. Most of the time, big teams of S-Ranked hunters are formed to dispel these gates.
Sustained Gates
Sustained gates are gates that remain even after you defeat them. These gates must be defeated once every week. These are usually used to help new hunters train and get used to being in a gate. The boss is the same, and so are the monsters inside, they just respawn after some time has passed.
Double Dungeons
It's extremely rare, even more, rare than a red gate. These are boss rooms that, despite the ranking of the gate, are extremely powerful and definitely higher ranked. They are almost always either an A-ranked room or S-ranked. Seeing as how the groups that go into these gates are usually of that rank or, maybe, a few who are higher, it's pretty dangerous. A C-ranked hunter goes into a dungeon with a bunch of D-ranked hunters and in the boss room, they face A-Ranked or S-Ranked monsters.
"New World" Society
New world society is things that have changed since the start of everything, things that were not implemented before. These things were put in place to preserve human life.Breeders
breeders are made to, well, breed. Since the population has gone to such a low rate; the "government" decided to have a set amount of females and a set amount of males become breeders. The women are held in a facility and the men are able to come whenever they wish to, but they do have a set amount of times that they have to come in. Most of the females were chosen for this role and did not volunteer. All the children born from the breeders will be put into homes where they will grow up never knowing their real parents. Every five years there would be another "choosing of the breeders" ceremony, in which those that are chosen will replace the breeders that have been breeders for the longest.
Special Skills
Other than the abilities have from their class, sometimes people are awakened with special skills, or, more commonly, they acquire these skills through their time as hunters.
These skills are usually pretty unique and are known to be pretty useful. Well, some of the more famously known ones. A lot can actually be pretty useless.
Titles
Titles are things that one can earn by completing hidden scenarios, or, simply a reward given by Dokkaebis due to the constellation's persistence. Though, sometimes these titles can be super weird.
These titles have various different effects when equipped/activated.
For example, beast killer. User can do up to 15% more damage on any beast-type monster. This is usually achieved pretty easily, for killing mobs and mobs of beast-type monsters. (for example, if one was attacked by multiple packs of hyena monsters, and wiped them out by themselves or with very little help, they would receive this title. this type of monster is very low level though, usually found in D-Ranked dungeons).
Sometimes you may receive a ridiculous title for just doing something a constellation is impressed with. (whether if it's a good kind of impression you want or not.)
Constellation Grades/Ranks
Even the constellations are ranked. Some are higher than others.
Historical Figure Grade (lowest rank) - a historical figure of the universe's past, usually earth.
Narrative Grade (mid-rank) - people that are typically seen in 'fables'
Myth Grade (Highest rank) - those seen in religions and mythology, such as greek mythology or monotheism.
Incarnation/Avatar Contracts
When signing a contract with a sponsor, you are able to receive 'stigmas' from them, or, more specifically, special abilities. These vary depending on the grade of the sponsor. Myth Grades typically don't give out many stigmas, nor do they take on many sponsors, as all of their stigmas are "S ranked". Narrative Grade constellations give out a few, their skills ranging from B to A, with an occasional, very rare, S ranked. Historical Figures usually give out C to D ranked stigmas, but they can occasionally rise to the higher ranks like Narrative Grade, going all the way up to S.
Contracts also allow the sponsors to sponsor their incarnations with coins and growth packages (item, allows one to grow quicker in terms of levels)
